Do you rinse and repeat?

Just curious really. I only ever shampoo my hair once, but have recently seen people talking about how important it is to do it twice to ensure hair is properly clean. Some say their hair looks much better as a result too.

I always assumed the instructions to “rinse and repeat” was a way to sell more shampoo. But perhaps that is overly cynical of me?

So what do you do, and why? And if you are a double shampoo-er, would you recommend I start? For context, I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days but I rarely (like once a month) use any hair products and I rarely even blow dry my hair.

Depends how dirty your hair is and how often you wash.

I agree with a PP who said it’s a hangover from days women only washed their hair once a week.

If you wash every day or two you shouldn’t need to shampoo twice.

GameOfJones · Yesterday 06:25

Yes, always. I have very greasy hair and double shampooing means I can wash it every other day instead of needing to do it daily. I agree with others that the second shampoo lathers so much better than the first, so makes my hair feel really clean but if I was washing my hair daily I'd only shampoo it once.

I do it twice (with different shampoos) because I use products like leave in conditioner on my hair.

A long while back there was a tv show called Cutting It. There was a line about hair washing regarding the mount of bubbles or foam. The character said that if the shampoo goes flat then you need a second wash. It was a fictional TV show, but I've been using that as my guide ever since.

I remember Cutting It!

I loved it at the time!

No,never do. Hair is clean, soft and shiny

WhatAMarvelousTune · Yesterday 08:47

I wash my hair every day and just do one wash with shampoo. If I don’t wash my hair one day for whatever reason, I do two washes because it does get very greasy

OfstedInfection · Yesterday 08:48

My hair is very long and think and a pain to wash plus I live in a very hard water area so lathering is very difficult. I do wash twice as I get a much better lather the second time and my hair feels better.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 08:48

Once, but most days. Only exception is if I’ve been to a festival/rally without showers and haven’t washed it for a whole weekend or it’s stinky from a bonfire perhaps.

Yes, but with very specific shampoos.

Been doing this for 6 months or so now after seeing a shampoo combo recommended on instagram, my hair has never ever behaved in its life before now and now it behaves perfectly which is life changing 😂 but for me it's this combo for shampoos as opposed to just doing a double wash with one shampoo.

What shampoo do you use?

YourRareMember · Yesterday 12:21

I do now but that's only because I go over a week without washing my hair so it needs it. If you're doing it every few days that seems unnecessary. Before anyone thinks I'm gross I have dry, very wavy hair and it doesn't get greasy.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · Yesterday 12:32

I do. Usually because I’ve used dry shampoo or hairspray. I go by the lather, if it’s not bubbly then I don’t feel like it’s cleaning my hair / scalp properly

Secretseverywhere · Yesterday 12:32

I don’t as I don’t think it’s great for hair to be too clean, surely you want to keep some natural oils otherwise you’d have to replace them all with products.

Reevester · Yesterday 12:42

Yes absolutely. I wouldn’t wash my hair, if I had run out of either, as it would make the process pointless. I wash once a week.

fable & mane holiroots hair oil for a few hours before or overnight
Rinse out, enzyme scalp scrub in shower
faith in nature as a clarifying shampoo

fable & mane shampoo & conditioner
fable & mane hair mask
Tresemme uv heat protection spray
hair dryer
Bed head curl crème
done.

best condition my hair has ever been in, done this for 3 years now after a lot of research for wedding prep. Hated my hair previously. Don’t ever think about just cutting it all off anymore 😂

FrenchFryFrances · Yesterday 12:47

Yes. I’ve got really thick hair and feel one wash only seems to do the surface the second gets right in there and properly cleans it.
My hairdresser does mine three times.

I’m envious of people who don’t have to wash their hair very often. Despite being thick and healthy mine doesn’t look great after two days and usually smells of cooking.

bythefire6 · Yesterday 12:47

yes because I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week and use a lot of gel

suburburban · Yesterday 12:54

Yes always shampoo twice

Lorrymum · Yesterday 12:57

Once. Always thought it was marketing ploy.

Lemonade2011 · Yesterday 16:32

yep, you use less the second wash too, definitely makes a difference to my hair. However we all have different hair types so some people likely don’t need to.

AuntChippy · Yesterday 16:36

I wash my hair only once a week (it’s long, thick and curly and never greasy).

I shampoo twice as it needs it. The first application doesn’t really lather much.

EleanorMc67 · Yesterday 16:59

No. It's unnecessary if you've shampoo-ed thoroughly. Even if you only wash it once a week or so, though I wash & condition my hair daily. Rinsing is what's more important, so that all residue is removed.

Trevor Sorbie said that once you think you've rinsed your shampoo out, you should then spend the same amount of time again in continuing to rinse, before you then condition it (& rinse further if it's not a light leave-in type).
