Do you rinse and repeat?

Just curious really. I only ever shampoo my hair once, but have recently seen people talking about how important it is to do it twice to ensure hair is properly clean. Some say their hair looks much better as a result too.

I always assumed the instructions to “rinse and repeat” was a way to sell more shampoo. But perhaps that is overly cynical of me?

So what do you do, and why? And if you are a double shampoo-er, would you recommend I start? For context, I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days but I rarely (like once a month) use any hair products and I rarely even blow dry my hair.

It’s marketing nonsense. I don’t even use shampoo as I have dry hair, I wash in Homemade conditioner. At 59 I have thick wavy hair people compliment me on- one of my few good features. It makes me wonder if shampoo is responsible for “ hair ageing” ie thinning, lacklustre hair.

DramaAlpaca · 24/04/2026 14:48

Nope, I do a quick hair wash every morning in the shower and I only shampoo once. My hair is shortish and quite fine, it doesn't need more than that but it does need washing daily.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 24/04/2026 15:00

I only wash my hair every 7-10 days and I use a lot of product on it so I always wash twice, sometimes even 3 times.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/04/2026 15:12

No

zxzx6576 · 24/04/2026 15:15

Yes because I use a silver shampoo for the first wash to stop brassiness and then I follow with my favourite shampoo that leaves my hair smelling nice!

GreenLemonade · 24/04/2026 15:42

Yes, I wash twice, it makes a big difference to my hair. I only wash it once a week and use dry shampoo in the last few days before a wash.

Corvidsarethebest · 24/04/2026 15:44

I do it occasionally if my hair needs a good wash and I haven't washed it recently. Just feels very very clean afterwards.

What2wear2work · 24/04/2026 15:50

I heard it was because need hair to be completely wet throughout shaft for good wash and shampoo to be effective so first time round is to ensure all hair shaft wet as remove surface grease, second time to wash thoroughly down to scalp and roots

FloweryPenPot · 24/04/2026 15:55

I used to only wash once but now I wash twice and actually use less shampoo doing that. I do one on the roots to get the grease out (not that I have greasy hair, but you know..) and then a second time where I do my whole head. It foams up lovely with less shampoo.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/04/2026 16:01

Occasionally but usually just once.

dollyblue01 · 24/04/2026 16:04

Yes because I only wash it once a week and it need a proper clean.

About the "conditioner first method" that I use, it works for me, but might not for everyone. See, I just wet the hair, turn off the water, put conditioner in, leave it there for the length of my shower, then finish with shampoo. For me it's a much quicker method, but each to their own. Also, as I have fine hair, I don't like how conditioner last leaves it, kind of flat and hard to style, but we are all different. Oh and I just barely rinse out the conditioner with a blast of water before shampooing.

I hope that answers those who wondered!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/04/2026 17:38

Lather, rinse and repeat. ALWAYS repeat. My hair looks and feels noticeably worse with just one shampoo before conditioning.

Growlybear83 · 24/04/2026 17:49

I’m 68 and I’ve always done two washes sincs I was a small child.

Ohgoose · 24/04/2026 19:48

I don’t double shampoo every wash but I do if I’ve used a lot of product or dry shampoo and it does make a difference. I have a conditioner for use after deep clean shampoo so it’s well moisturized.

I also double cleanse my face.

Hannaseed · 24/04/2026 19:54

No because I find washing my hair a real chore, so like to get it over with as fast as possible.

Nope I never have and I've had long and healthy hair all my life.

Same here!! Always had really thick long hair, never once washed it twice

Theimpossiblegirl · 24/04/2026 22:07

I'm curly so rarely shampoo. I co wash most days and shampoo every 2 weeks or so when I get a build up of products.

Nenya · 24/04/2026 22:12

I do if I've been up in the hills hiking with the dog for a week. Not otherwise.

HoldMyWine · 24/04/2026 22:17

Occasionally I wash twice of if I can feel product build up but not as a regular thing

Same - use far less on my long hair by doing two lathers, only need a tiny amount each time. First one just on roots and then the second time gets to the whole length. I used to use far more trying to get enough lather going on the first go.

I wash my long hair three-four times a week like this and one normal sized bottle of shampoo lasts months!

Thanks,I'll give it a go tomorrow!

No - but I wash my hair every day. It looks like I’ve escaped from the zoo in the morning but isn’t actually greasy/dirty, so I don’t think it needs two shampoos.

Noshadelamp · Yesterday 00:07

Yes. The first wash breaks the surface tension on the hair and the second wash actually cleases the hair.
The oil on our scalp is hydrophobic, it repels water, so the more oily your scalp and hair is, the harder the shampoo has to work.

If you wash your hair every day it probably won't be necessary to do two washes.

kkloo · Yesterday 02:51

Yes, but with very specific shampoos.

Been doing this for 6 months or so now after seeing a shampoo combo recommended on instagram, my hair has never ever behaved in its life before now and now it behaves perfectly which is life changing 😂 but for me it's this combo for shampoos as opposed to just doing a double wash with one shampoo.
