Do you rinse and repeat?

Just curious really. I only ever shampoo my hair once, but have recently seen people talking about how important it is to do it twice to ensure hair is properly clean. Some say their hair looks much better as a result too.

I always assumed the instructions to “rinse and repeat” was a way to sell more shampoo. But perhaps that is overly cynical of me?

So what do you do, and why? And if you are a double shampoo-er, would you recommend I start? For context, I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days but I rarely (like once a month) use any hair products and I rarely even blow dry my hair.

Nope only ever done it once, I’ve also thought it was a ruse to flog more shampoo. If your hair is squeaky clean I don’t see how it can get cleaner washing it again.

TheChosenTwo · 24/04/2026 09:38

Sometimes I do if it was overdue a wash, my indicator is how much of a ‘lather’ I get (not really anything as I use silicone/sulphate free shampoo so it’s less foamy but I can tell the difference when it’s really greasy between the lathers).

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/04/2026 09:41

Depends how often you wash your hair I think.
I wash mine everyday so do one wash.
If I washed it less often I would do a double.

PizzaPowder · 24/04/2026 09:41

I wash my hair as little as possible as it takes so long to do so i always wash it twice.

Once with a cheap shampoo then wash and condition with the better stuff.

Epicuriouss · 24/04/2026 09:43

I got sucked into washing twice after seeing loads about it, but my hair ended up like straw.

EverythingIsComputer · 24/04/2026 09:50

This is an instruction from days gone by when people washed their hair around once per week. I only repeat if I’ve had a lot of product in it as I tend to wash it daily.

I do my dog twice though on his annual soapy shower, makes all the difference.

That would be my concern too.

I don’t wash my hair everyday otherwise it ends up like straw, so I wash it every few days and always shampoo twice - I get longer between washes when I shampoo twice.

I mainly focus on roots and scalp and avoid the ends

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 24/04/2026 09:56

Yes always.

Butterme · 24/04/2026 09:58

I’ve heard about this too.

I use t-gel first, rinse, then use my normal shampoo and then rinse again - so I’m technically doing it twice but only because I need to use t-gel but don’t like the smell.

Seagroves · 24/04/2026 10:09

I’m just as cynical as you OP!

I only do it twice if I’ve had lots of product on my hair, which isn’t often.

mantez · 24/04/2026 10:15

Never, what a marketing joke. I use conditioner BEFORE shampooing, and that's a game changer. Put it on the minute I'm in the shower, do the other business, finish with "one and done" shampoo.

DancingNotDrowning · 24/04/2026 10:18

Yes makes a massive difference to my fine combination hair.

I only need a half pump for the second wash it lathers much better than the first which makes always take as a good sign

ShortAndIntense · 24/04/2026 10:29

I never used to, but starting washing twice a few years ago and I’ve really noticed a positive difference. Hair feels cleaner with more volume and I can go longer between washes. Second wash lathers wayyyy better too and makes me feel like my hair is getting really clean. I suppose it’s down to personal preference really.

I use salon quality Wella shampoo and conditioner in massive bottles with the pumps though, so that might make a difference too. Lasts for ages, around 6 months, but I have to pay around £40 upfront (covers both shampoo and conditioner). Not sure if it’s any different…

PlantsAndSpaniels · 24/04/2026 10:29

Yes as I only wash my hair once a week ish (curly hair), and if i dont double wash, it doesnt last as long. It depends on your hair type and products used to whether it will make a difference.

WHAT!!!

I need more information!!

Why do you do this?
Do you put the conditioner all over like you would shampoo or just on the ends?

SilverPink · 24/04/2026 10:52

Nope, i think it’s just a ruse to sell more
shampoo. For years I washed it twice, then I just started washing it once and it made no difference whatsoever. Wash my hair every other day for reference.

BowlCone · 24/04/2026 11:05

I see it as advice from the days when people had their hair set with lotion once a week, so had to wash out a week’s worth of dirt, grease and product.

willowstar · 24/04/2026 11:09

It depends. If I have done more exercise and my head feels sweaty/smellier than usual then I like to wash twice. Likewise if I have used dry shampoo. Otherwise just once.

ThejoyofNC · 24/04/2026 11:12

Nope I never have and I've had long and healthy hair all my life.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 24/04/2026 11:15

I do, yes.
1st with a clarifying shampoo, and then with my more expensive shampoo.
i go as long as socially possible between hair washes, and so it doesn’t make any difference in the frequency in which I buy shampoo.

give it a try and see if you feel like there’s a difference. If not, switch back.

conditioner before shampoo makes zero sense, when you look at what each product is actually used for - depending on hair type, of course. Using a sensible amount of conditioner and rinsing correctly isn’t going to weigh hair down.

Mydogisagentleman · 24/04/2026 11:15

Once here.
My hair is short, thick and coarse.
Wash it every day in hard water.

5to5 · 24/04/2026 11:16

I have curly hair so don’t use shampoo every time mostly conditioner. Do when I do use shampoo I have to use it twice to strip all of the build up.

Thundertoast · 24/04/2026 11:20

I try to go 3/4 days without washing to stretch out my colour (I WFH so this makes it easier) and so when I manage to do that, I do wash it twice, but only use half or 2/3rds a normal amount of shampoo on each wash (the second time you wash it lathers up really well) and I like it a lot. I started doing this before finding out it was a 'thing' though. Works well for me, but I take my time with conditioners and I can imagine it definitely wouldnt work for every hair type. I wouldnt wash it twice if i need to wash my hair sooner (so every other day) for whatever reason (...having to look presentable in public!!)

On wet or dry hair? Why does it make it better?
