Dress over Pants?

adultingforever · 22/04/2026 21:28

Does anyone wear a dress over pants? I like the look, and I need to cover my legs because of old skin cancer..... but I don't know if this is acceptable? I used to see women doing this a few years back, but not lately, Hmmmm

It’s a long time since I’ve gone out in a dress without pants….

Babyboomtastic · 22/04/2026 21:34

A bit indecent not to eh 😬

ScotiaLass · 22/04/2026 21:35

Funnily enough I was in the city centre today and noticed that the window display in New Look had dresses over trousers (sorry not American, so can't use pants!) so I guess that look is back in again. They were silky, midi-length style dresses over jeans if that helps.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 22/04/2026 21:36

I always wear pants under a dress - it’s quite exposing otherwise if it’s a bit windy

rockstarshoes · 22/04/2026 21:54

ii think some dresses look good with trousers but I think they need to match in some way!

I have a piece of my shin missing after an accident and unless my legs are very tanned I either wear boots, western or Engineer style, footless tights or just make sure that the dress is long enough to cover it. sometimes natural tights which even out the skin tone but the missing chunk is still obvious.

it’s my 3rd summer with it so I’m getting braver!

Abitlosttoday · 22/04/2026 21:55

I can't believe I wore dresses over trousers 20 years ago, but I did. Almost like a fashion zombie. I won't be doing it again.

Shoemadlady · 22/04/2026 22:27

When you say pants, do you mean trousers or underwear? Underwear under a dress yes. A dress over trousers, no. It’s a bit 90’s 😉

rockstarshoes · 22/04/2026 22:41

Did any of you take the time to read the OP?

Here’s someone who is conscious of skin cancer scars & you bunch of bitches can’t even take the time to offer a little bit of sympathy or kindness!

magiciansgirlonce · 22/04/2026 22:53

Hello, could you not wear thick black tights?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/04/2026 23:00

I see a lot of “cool girls” wearing this look on TikTok at the moment. I think it really depends on the dress/trousers as to whether it looks good - for example a silky slip dress with lace trim over jeans, then a knit or t-shirt over the dress looks (to me) chic, but (again just to me) a floral dress over leggings doesn’t look great. The former tend to be fashion-influencer types, women in their 20s/30s.

TyneTeas · 22/04/2026 23:39

I wear short and midi dresses as tunic type tops over leggings regularly

Do not care one not or iota if 'acceptable' or current.

Ignore the fashion police (whether ones in here or the ones you fear in your head) and just wear whatever you want/enjoy/feel good in

You don't need a reason, but even if you did, as reasons go, you have good one Flowers

TLDR
Wear what you like!

Thanks to every one who answered!! And yes, I am American, so pants means trousers to the rest of the world. Sorry about that, but I did get a few funny answers due to the use of "pants"

yep
61 yr old me has
light silk runic over wide legged pants - i felt very chic and lots compliments

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · Yesterday 07:24

I don’t… But I’m sure it will be fashionable again quite soon! And if that’s what works best for you? Go for it! :)

I am however wondering whether a midi or maxi skirt wouldn’t be easier and also more comfortable in summer / warm weather?

kdramaqueen · 22/04/2026 23:29

The answer is yes, but it's nothing like the look from about 30 years ago.

Many of these seem to function as (summer) coats, tbh… which isn’t a particulary new concept and it’s definitely not where my mind went when I read skirt over dresses 🤣

Shedmistress · Yesterday 07:27

I do it everyday. Until it is too hot to do so.

its a proportional thing for me - short with a short body and longer legs means it doesn’t work for me as it creates too much bulk but I have a taller friend who does it much better as there is more room for it to drape iyswim.

my mum has to cover up for similar reasons and she will wear wafty, wide legged trousers. She’s a tiny hobbit like creature but this looks good on her - light, loose natural fabrics that sort of flow.

I must say that as a menopausal female, the summer coat look is very appealing in linen and over a sleeveless top.

This came up on my Facebook feed this morning! Definitely on trend!

Rock ever look you like op, wear what feel right for you and ignore the fashion police and pedantic arseholes on here. You were clearly not talking about underwear!

Dresses or tunics over trousers or leggings is absolutely fine. Many women around the world wear this look as it is comfy, practical, looks nice and is feminine.

I hope that you can feel confident with your scaring and wear what makes you feel good about yourself.

StylishAndBeautiful · Yesterday 17:15

I'm in a multicultural area and plenty of women wear a shalwar kameez.

mcmuffin22 · Yesterday 17:26

I liked the look the first time round. I am thinking Natalie Imbruglia. I would definitely go for a shorter dress.

Chumbawomble · Yesterday 18:23

I do: nice and warm. I favour cotton slightly flared leggings. I also wear jumpers or sweatshirts over the dresses.
