Dress over Pants?

adultingforever · 22/04/2026 21:28

Does anyone wear a dress over pants? I like the look, and I need to cover my legs because of old skin cancer..... but I don't know if this is acceptable? I used to see women doing this a few years back, but not lately, Hmmmm

I loathe the look. For me it’s not stylish or fashionable.

hahabahbag · 23/04/2026 18:50

Over leggings is normal, tunics over wide legged trousers looks good too. Using pants is just confusing as it has a different meaning, whereas other Americanisms like cookie, candy, sidewalk etc aren’t as confusing

Floisme · 23/04/2026 19:11

One of my all time favourite outfits was a Zara bias cut dress that I wore with trousers until it literally fell apart in the washing machine. So yes, I would, but only if I found the right dress again.

Horses7 · 23/04/2026 19:38

I think trousers under a dress eg jeans or similar material/colour to dress looks really cool.
I predict it will come back into fashion again!!
Go ahead and wear what you like - who cares what anybody else thinks? X

henlake7 · 23/04/2026 20:06

I think it can work. As others have said something like leggings or wide legged trousers with a floaty tunic style dress, or maybe an open shirt dress over a vest.

I don't think I'm cool enough to pull it off though! I never get my legs out due to horrendous varicose veins so once I'm out of opaque tights it's either floaty wide legged trousers or maxi skirts/dresses for me.

ToadRage · 23/04/2026 20:49

It's many years since I wore a dress over trousers but I wear leggings as under dresses daily.

If you like the look, and it suits your circumstances - go for it!
Find fabrics that go together in terms of texture.
I could imagine it could be quite hot though? Maybe wide legged trousers and a long top could suit, as well.

ii think some dresses look good with trousers but I think they need to match in some way!

I have a piece of my shin missing after an accident and unless my legs are very tanned I either wear boots, western or Engineer style, footless tights or just make sure that the dress is long enough to cover it. sometimes natural tights which even out the skin tone but the missing chunk is still obvious.

it’s my 3rd summer with it so I’m getting braver!

That's great! I hope you get more confident about showing your legs.

rockstarshoes · 23/04/2026 20:57

Thank you Loch!

I was really traumatised at first! I couldn’t look at it for ages but I’m getting there!

You're doing well. In all honesty, most people won't notice, and if they do? It really doesn't matter. Just build it up, and enjoy the sunshine!

Did any of you take the time to read the OP?

Here’s someone who is conscious of skin cancer scars & you bunch of bitches can’t even take the time to offer a little bit of sympathy or kindness!

Just what I was thinking.

Studyunder · 23/04/2026 22:17

My friend wears leggings or footless tights under dresses. She finds it more comfortable than tights which I completely agree with!

AnyQuestions101 · 24/04/2026 17:22

I wore a dress over jeans (vintage Levi 501s, for reference, so quite slim fitting) last night to the theatre, I felt very chic. I’m mid 40s if this is relevant

MyEasterBonnet · 24/04/2026 20:08

I’m North West England and pants only means trousers here, no one would call their underwear pants round here, so I didn’t understand the first replies at first.

I often wear leggings under a dress, or tights. I don’t like having bare legs myself. I wouldn’t wear pants or jeans personally, but I’m sure it would look fine with the right pairing.

I’m in Scotland and would call certain trousers pants - generally things that pull on, linen pants, track pants. I’m curious what you call underwear though? (Honestly not being at all snarky, just interested - I would say pants or knickers, but as a kid would get told off that knickers was rude!)

Knickers would be the norm here. Pants would be anything like jeans etc, but I’d use trousers for workwear style suit trousers. Underpants would be like Y fronts, rather than boxers.

Underpants makes me laugh. As a kid my grandparents stayed by a newsagent/convenience store called Blah and Blah Underwood’s and my grandpa would say he was “off to Underpants for the papers” which I thought was the funniest thing ever.

Not being sarrky but I can't see any difference between the feeling of wearing leggings, footless tights or tights?

somburd · 25/04/2026 10:10

It's a bit 2000 isn't it? I got into a bit of a loop like this when White Stuff used to do nice long tunics.

It’s the feet in tights that are sometimes odd! In the winter I tend to wear footless opaque tights and then socks!
No one can see my socks but they are much comfier than the tights with feet!

HatStickBoots · 25/04/2026 12:18

Young art students in my town wear jeans under a broderie anglais petticoats or full cotton skirts and dresses. The jeans are often baggy and faded with scuffed hems. I’ve also seen colourful, warm and baggy pants underneath full skirts or dresses too. I used to love wearing a long, button through dress over loose, linen pants.
