What to wear as mother of the bride for a quirky wedding

My daughter is getting married beginning of September . It’s going to be a quirky wedding , she has lots of weird and wonderful friends. Wedding will be colourful and diverse . All on a budget as they are saving for a house but money spent where it needs to be spent on the things that matter . As the mother of the bride , a casual dressing 60 year old , and fairly conservative when it comes to formal outfits I am lost as to what I should wear . I’m usually a River Island, Next type of dresser, If I want something nice I head off to the outlet and grab something from one of the designer shops .
I’ve lost a lot of weight on skinny jabs and am a size 14 which I’m happy at . My shape is large bust 38f , and a bit up and down with no waist so I wouldn’t say my figure is great but loads tell me I look great now and def not to lose any more. Only colours that don’t suit me and I don’t like are Red and Yellow .
my Arms are very flabby from weight loss so looking for a long or 3/4 sleeve and I have a horrible scar on my knee so looking at midi or maxi dress .
pleats aren’t great on me, make me look huge.
If it was one of my other children I would be going down one of the traditional mother of the bride looks, Veni , Jon Charles etc as that is what I’d be comfortable in as I’m quite a glam mum but this is not going to be that type of wedding . Help please girlies! Want to spend around £200, could squeeze more if I need to .

Very exciting!

Aspiga, Rixo, Me and Em.

Long sleeves are an absolute must for the MOTB. They are much more elegant and change the entire look.

I’d be tempted to go for a crazily lovely hat, bought, made or rented.

Avoid anything other than cotton - summer temps in the UK nowadays indicate strongly
against synthetic fibres.

Will echo @EgregiouslyOverdressed I recently lost a load of weight on jabs and am now a size 12/14 - went to Rigby and Peller for a fitting to treat myself to some nice new lingerie and came back with comfortable bras which are 32 for one brand and 34 in another - I haven't worn these sizes since I was about 12!

Have a look on One Hundred Stars. Their dresses are lovely and can be dressed up or down. Gorgeous handbags too

Of course she can! She’s lost weight not bone mass! I’ve lost 3 stone by back size hasn’t changed but my cup size has!

A size 14 has a 38" measurement at the widest point of the chest. It's therefore not possible that OP's under-bust measurement is 38", especially as she describes herself as having a large cup size.

I am going to be that person and recommend that you get a bra fitting because if you wear a size 14 dress then you are not a 38” back. You may be astonished at the effect that a well-fitted bra has on your whole shape.

I'm going to echo this. I went for a stylist session at John Lewis (can highly recommend that for your wedding outfit btw) and I was wearing size 12 and 36DD. Walked out in size 8/10 stuff and 32F bra! I felt like a new woman.

Honestly op I’d wear something you’re comfortable and happy with. There’s nothing worse than someone trying too hard to dress ‘quirky’!

I don't usually like much from Phase 8, but just occasionally they do something really nice. This is very Studio 54 70s disco-looking, in a good way (in fact, is there a bad way to do 70s disco ...? 🤔?!!). The black & gold version is mainly silk, too - but this version looks as if it might fit the OP's brief better.

I think you still need to stay true to your style so you feel comfortable and confident. Perhaps just go for a brighter colour than normal or a bold pattern, but in a style and fabric that works for you?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 26/04/2026 09:35

@Shelleybelly A lot from that company is resort wear. For a holiday. It’s a bit odd for a wedding if you don’t normally wear clothes like that. It’s good for a Caribbean wedding but I’d feel odd wearing most of those.

LightDrizzle · 26/04/2026 09:39

I think @JamieFraserskneewarmer has brilliant suggestions.

The website has a specific section of resort wear. There’s plenty that doesn’t fit into that category.

This is a fabulous dress. I bought it for a special birthday last summer (in a different colour) and it is SO flattering on tummy bust & arms.

Twisted Wunder dresses always look nice (no idea what the fabric is like) but they are all bright and eye catching. This would be under budget

At the other end and a bit over budget would be Farm Rio. All a bit quirky but utterly gorgeous

I think they are all polyester- stretchy but sweaty.

Frillysweetpea · 26/04/2026 20:59

I don't understand why you are get all these recommendations for Boho dresses if you're style is classic. I would buy a smart trouser suit with wide leg trousers and make it as 'funky' as is comfortable for you with some statement jewellery. Even if the funkiness level is quite low wide legged trousers will give you that relaxed feel. Maybe some fresh flowers in your hair rather than a hat but don't force it if it is not you. Enjoy the wedding day!
