No they're just put back or re-packaged if it's an online order. Who do you think would have the time to steam them either in a store or at a warehouse?

I read somewhere they are steamed.

Honestly no they don't. They really aren't going to pay anyone to do that job or even have the facilities. The store assistant just wheels the racks of clothes from the changing rooms, usually at the end of the day, and puts them all back. I think some very exclusive high end boutiques might do something of the sort, but that's just to steam creases out when an expensive garment starts to look a bit crumpled.

I meant online returns.

dudsville · 17/04/2026 18:12

Always! Everything, including towels and bedding. I like to know the items are clean, and I like my things to smell a certain way.

dudsville · 17/04/2026 18:13

I think they streamed things regularly during the pandemic, but that's it.

cantstopthinkingaboutit2 · 17/04/2026 18:13

Only if I buy them from Vinted

I meant online returns.

If the garment still looks new, doesn't smell and still has it's tags on the warehouse will just repackage it. But of course most returned garments have been tried on by people at home. If it is damaged or otherwise in an unfit state (such as stained, torn or smelly), the garment is generally sent to "salvage". In other words it is written off. Maybe they had different procedures during the pandemic, but steaming isn't a general feature and it isn't required by law.

Livpool · 17/04/2026 18:32

No, and I have never heard of this

Tuesdayschild50 · 17/04/2026 18:37

I'd wash babies clothes and new bedding because it feels scratchy but not my clothes.

Downatthebeach · 18/04/2026 13:26

Definitely as you don’t know who has touched or tried the clothes on. Also I love the smell of freshly laundered clothes off the line smelling of my favourite softener.
My mum always used to say I was fussy about things & at 76 I guess I still am.

lazysundaymorning0 · 18/04/2026 13:50

Yes because they smell chemically

SingaporeSlinky · 18/04/2026 13:50

Yes. I watched a tv programme a few years ago about the manufacturing chemicals left over on the fabrics, and you don’t know how many people have touched it, if it’s been on the floor, sat in a cardboard box in a warehouse for however long.

I only occasionally buy ‘dry clean only’ clothes and I just wash them on low temperature with gentle spin and they’ve always been fine.

Lourdes12 · 18/04/2026 13:52

Of course, they’re full of chemicals and give me a rash

Velvetandleather · 18/04/2026 13:53

Depends on what it is, something cheap from Amazon, yup. Something expensive from me and em, nope.

so are peiple also having anything dry cleaned only dry cleaned before wearing. I guess so, as it’s the same right. If it needs cleaning it needs cleaning.

Justmight · 18/04/2026 13:54

Nope, wouldn’t cross my mind.

FeralWoman · 18/04/2026 13:59

Yes. New clothes have formaldehyde in them. The stuff used to preserve dead bodies. It stinks and it’s bad for health. It helps prevent the clothes from becoming wrinkled. There’s also antifungal and anti microbial treatments on the clothes, and dye excess. I wash new clothes and towels etc because of the stink, the chemical coating feel of the fabric, the health risks and I have sensitive skin that gets itchy from new clothes. Also goodness knows who else has tried on the clothes and what was on their body. All new clothes and towels, sheets, etc are washed a minimum of two times before using and put outside in the sunshine to dry and air out.

If something was dry clean only I wouldn’t buy it. If it was an absolutely important item to have like a suit jacket I’d hang it outside in the sunshine for a day to help reduce the smell.

I wouldn’t buy something that needs ironing to look good, like a heavily pleated skirt, so no I wouldn’t wear something like that without washing it.

User3456 · 18/04/2026 14:08

No never
Although I did wash some new sheets I bought recently as they had a chemical smell to them

IDontFuckingThinkSo · 18/04/2026 14:53

I didn’t used to but after learning that some me have a fetish for trying in women’s cloths with no underwear on and rubbing their knobs on the women’s clothing or putting the crotch part of clothes in their mouths before putting it back on she shelves.

I’ve also see idiot “prankfluencers” do things like out itching powder inside clothes too.

Always wash everything now.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/04/2026 15:35

Towels definitely need washed otherwise they won;t absorb a damned thing .
Any new towels and new bedding goes on a hot wash .
If I remember to not use fabric conditioner then the towels are better .
DH likes sandpaper towels not fluffy .

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 18/04/2026 17:11

Not coats and cardigans, but anything that will be in contact with my skin. I worked in a big department store in my teens, there were some very weird and stinky customers (including a chap who knocked one of the mannequins down and humped it till he came all over the dress) as well as rats and mice in the store rooms.

I still don't care.

AnAudacityofinlaws · 18/04/2026 18:56

Yes, pretty much all textiles.

I don't think anyone expects you to care. Wash new clothes or don't wash them, it doesn't matter. It was just an explanation of why some people do wash new clothes.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/04/2026 20:01

Only if Im buying cotton traders jeggings. They absolutely reek. Its the dye used. You often have to wash them a few times.
