What to wear over this (it's a wedding one)?

Just that, really... I'm planning to wear this dress (photo below, hopefully) but the wedding is in early May (UK) and I'll need something to keep me warm... I'm thinking a pashmina-type thing of some sort in a plain colour that picks out one of the embroidered flowers...? Are there any other decent options? My budget is small, ideally less than £50 but if there's something versatile around I could stretch a point.

The dress choice is fixed, so please don't mention it if you think it's hideous. 😁

Please help!

This Phase 8 navy velvet jacket is cotton with a little bit of elastane, & is really well-reduced. Not seen it in the flesh but it looks well cut, & also wearable with lots of things afterwards? The satin trim makes it dressier.

I love the dress and definitely would consider a blue ( to pick up the blue on the dress ) shawl or pashmina … or a soft faux fur stole or jacket in black to be dramatic and glamorous ! Wear with confidence and enjoy the wedding !

I know you said not to mention the choice of dress but …. your parquet is absolutely beatiful! 😁

Ophir · 05/04/2026 11:28

I still think you should just wear it as it is.

But look at Zara if you really think you need
a jacket, I took a quick look, obviously depends on exact colours. I’d definitely go neutral for the jacket, not a colour. I like the black one

Soft blue pashmina picking out the blue shade. No idea if they are in fashion so to speak but you can't beat them for a bit of warmth while keeping it elegant and light. And so versatile.

Aww, thank you! I originally bought it as an online-only style from Mint Velvet but some time has passed since then and as I'm a bit bigger now (post baby, ha ha) I had to search for the next size up on Vinted, where I was lucky!

Thank you for your reply, I’ll look on the Mint Velvet website, they may have something else I like 🙂

Or you can buy it yourself - there seem to have been quite a few on eBay/Vinted/Vestiaire Collective etc - if any are in your size??

It’s such a pretty dress (and looks quite sheer), I’d wear flesh coloured thermals underneath in early May. And take a matching umbrella for rain.

If you wear something over the top, it should be one of the same colours of the dress. Suggest a longer line ‘duster’ coat/mac (I’d go for pink but depends what suits you), ideally with a draped lapel. Something like this:

A pashmina and broach would also look good. Pashminas never go out of fashion if worn with style.

Should be easy to get something second hand (Vinted, eBay). Or suggest T K Maxx. They do lovely Pashminas. Maybe also Primark (you’d never know with some of their pieces).

I'd wear a short boxy jacket in one of the colours in the dress. I like the cape suggestions too.

My son is getting married on 1st May and I’ve not even thought about wearing something over my dress! He’s getting married in a registry office then we are walking to a near by hotel for a meal. Other than buying a plain coloured umbrella ( my telescopic one is a multicoloured one with a frill!) I would prefer to shiver when outdoors! Luckily the dress code for the registry office is smart casual as they are having a more formal evening reception the day after when I’ll be staying at the venue so no jacket needed.

I’ll have to ask my fashion guru aka my sister what she is wearing, I doubt she’ll be wearing a jacket!

Are you a geordie 🤣

How can they advertise a polyester scarf as a cashmere scarf on Etsy @EdithBond ?
That really annoys me.

How do you know it’s polyester? I can’t see any fabric details although the labels look ai generated slop to me and the scarves look potentially made of something fleecy?

deeahgwitch · 07/04/2026 10:32

I went into the item details section. Not very prominent- you have to look for it.
“….Crafted from high quality polyester with a luxurious cashmere like feel….”
🙄
Under the trade description act is it allowed ?

Honestly are broaches still a thing? I was in a charity shop recently and saw some and had a flashback to my grandma who would wear one (born 1909), my mother never did (she would be in her 80s now and none of her late 80s surviving siblings do either). Are they actually on sale anywhere (apart from charity shops)?

You do of course still get them, but the only person I’ve ever seen wearing one of late is Nicola Sturgeon

You owe me £55 as I have to buy that jacket, as it’s gorgeous!

@DavyCrockettsWildFrontEar the dress is also gorgeous and this jacket is perfect!

Brooches are very fashionable now! The way to wear them is to use a selection of three or more different ones together. Mango, Zara and M&S all have a appropriately eclectic selection to choose from!

lazyarse123 · 07/04/2026 22:48

No idea fashionwise but that dress is beautiful.

Maddy70 · 07/04/2026 22:50

I love the dress.! I think a navy wrap

But why buy new, when you can buy genuine & beautiful vintage ones for less money & better quality??!!
