What to wear over this (it's a wedding one)?

Just that, really... I'm planning to wear this dress (photo below, hopefully) but the wedding is in early May (UK) and I'll need something to keep me warm... I'm thinking a pashmina-type thing of some sort in a plain colour that picks out one of the embroidered flowers...? Are there any other decent options? My budget is small, ideally less than £50 but if there's something versatile around I could stretch a point.

The dress choice is fixed, so please don't mention it if you think it's hideous. 😁

Please help!

I've seen lovely brooches in Oliver Bonas, H&M and John Lewis recently. I've also got a stash of retro ones that I inherited from my Gran (mostly OTT costume jewellery bling from the 1950s) and some boho ones I bought for myself in the 2000s. They're great for adding a bit of sparkle or colour to an outfit.

Weeelokthen · 04/04/2026 16:46

Wow, love the dress

ForPinkDuck · 04/04/2026 16:52

Id wear a knee length coat. In navy. Im not a royalist but they wear coats and dresses v well for formal occasions. Pashminas are out of date.

@Pearlstillsinging not me but who wants to cover up a nice dress?
I'd rather be cold!

If you choose a jacket which looks as good as the dress and they complement each other, you look far better than when you are shivering. Presumably the jacket will come off at the reception, anyway.

BurntBroccoli · 04/04/2026 16:57

How about a capelet? Less restrictive with those sleeves and looks very glamorous!

I’d go with a navy blazer, ideally something you can wear again later on with jeans. Although that first velvet suggestion is a good one.

I remember being so cold at a late May wedding years ago, nearly every women at the outdoor drinks had their DPs suit jacket over their dresses, the only women not shivering and looking miserable were the older ladies who’d put on a jacket.

Cold people tense up, body language gets less relaxed, the non-posed photos from that wedding look awful and like everyone is miserable.

(I had the opposite problem, late autumn wedding and most guests had dressed for it being wintery, but we had a freakishly hot day. Lots of photos with guests looking a bit sweaty.)

Joe Brown currently have a blazer in Peacock colour. Either that or the first jacket linked to would pick up the blue shade in the dress and look much better than navy with it.

I close accounts on here because I waste so much time but make the mistake of still reading and inevitably a post triggers me into rejoining

Are they on sale anywhere? John Lewis, almost every art gallery and museum shop, jewellers, craft fairs, independent boutiques.

Glad you've been triggered into regeneration, Time Lord-style, @PhaedraTwo ...!! Though I waste far too much bloody time on here too ...

A velvet wrap

Comedycook · 04/04/2026 18:08

I'm thinking a sort of navy cape which fastens at the top

I think Joe Browns have an extra 20% off their sale prices too, or at least they did yesterday with a code.

There is a company who do long velvet duster coats called Nancy Mac. They closed down but have reopened as the rare and beautiful.

Aren't they gorgeous!

I'm just wondering what I might go to when I could wear one!

Whoops75 · 04/04/2026 18:51

Definitely not a bolero or pashmina or anything short they will age you 20 years! Wear a coat to the church with a nice scarf, once at the venue unveil the dress.

DavyCrockettsWildFrontEar · 04/04/2026 19:02

Thank you all so much, there are some fantastic ideas here - now hesitating between something artfully draped with that beautiful brooch and the Joe Browns jacket... 😀 I absolutely love the look of those duster coats but not sure I can justify the expense - no more family weddings on the cards for a while, I suspect!

I'd go for a black jacket rather than blue (I believe the dress, which is lovely, has black accents, around the neck for example - unless that's a very dark navy?)

On the basis that, depending on hour colouring, the blue may not work, whereas everyone looks good in black! And a black jacket is more versatile and likely to go with other outfits too on the future - depending on your figure I'd go for a tailored one to accentuate your waist.

And I fucking love brooches, so am thrilled to hear they are back, and would be tempted to find a blue one, to pick up one of the blue shades in the dress, and pin it onto the lapel of said tailored jacket.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 04/04/2026 21:20

I don't think a fitted bolero cardigan would fit over the long sleeves. I like the first velvet jacket suggested but wonder if it's a bit too long over a dress? A cropped boxy jacket that ends on the waist in a similar blue to accents in the dress would work - start searching Vinted!

QueenDaisy · 04/04/2026 21:35

Your dress is lovely, would you mind saying where you bought it from 🙂

Aww, thank you! I originally bought it as an online-only style from Mint Velvet but some time has passed since then and as I'm a bit bigger now (post baby, ha ha) I had to search for the next size up on Vinted, where I was lucky!

My dds wedding day turned out to be unexpectedly cold. I wasn't wearing anything over my lovely dress even if l shivered to death. But l was wearing a full body pull me in 0thing underneath and it kept me warm and snug. I wouldn't cover up that dress but l would have a warm layer underneath

EleanorMc67 · 04/04/2026 23:45

I don't think the dress has any teal/peacock in it, does it?

Hard to be sure, but from other online images it looks like black, white, pale sage/khaki green & various shades of blue. Navy, French blue, sky blue & airforce blue, or similar? So I'd pick one (or more) of those blue shades to tone with the dress.

I think a velvet jacket is a good idea. Goose bumps never look great in wedding photos ... However, I really dislike crushed velvet (always have, even in the 80s!!). And even if I did like crushed velvet, it's too textured to wear with a dress with lots of texture & pattern going on. I also dislike all the polyester velvets & velours out there. They tend to look shiny & cheap.

The Joe Brown moleskin jacket is cotton at least, but it has orange stitching details all over it - it's too casual & wouldn't look right with the dress. The biker-style velour one is stretch polyester velour - it's too synthetic/fussy & a bit cheap-looking, IMO.

Better to go with a navy/French blue cotton velvet jacket I think. And why restrict yourself to one brooch? Get a trio of vintage crystal 50s/60s ones in shades of blue ...!!!
