What to wear over this (it's a wedding one)?

Just that, really... I'm planning to wear this dress (photo below, hopefully) but the wedding is in early May (UK) and I'll need something to keep me warm... I'm thinking a pashmina-type thing of some sort in a plain colour that picks out one of the embroidered flowers...? Are there any other decent options? My budget is small, ideally less than £50 but if there's something versatile around I could stretch a point.

The dress choice is fixed, so please don't mention it if you think it's hideous. 😁

Please help!

This blue velvet jacket?

Fleetheart · 03/04/2026 18:34

it’s a lovely dress

Fleetheart · 03/04/2026 18:35

I would say a short navy jacket maybe

DavyCrockettsWildFrontEar · 03/04/2026 18:44

Thank you! ❤️

Pashminas aren’t a fashion item these days but a they’re a very useful classic.

This place you can order in your bespoke size and colour. Have a look on their website for their colour swatches. Maybe a blue grey or a gold colour?

Honestly are broaches still a thing? I was in a charity shop recently and saw some and had a flashback to my grandma who would wear one (born 1909), my mother never did (she would be in her 80s now and none of her late 80s surviving siblings do either). Are they actually on sale anywhere (apart from charity shops)?

I close accounts on here because I waste so much time but make the mistake of still reading and inevitably a post triggers me into rejoining

Are they on sale anywhere? John Lewis, almost every art gallery and museum shop, jewellers, craft fairs, independent boutiques.

Brooches were a prominent fixture on the autumn/winter 2026 runways, from Giorgio Armani to Chopova Lowena.

I don't think anything more needs to be said. Dresses over jackets can be really tricky but that's a good shape for that dress.

Great read thanks for that - how interesting ‘Victorian era’ making a come back. Will get back down the charity shop to see what I can salvage!

Just be chilly, you’ll look fab

On no account wear a pashmina, they exist only on MN

Not Victorian but if you find any Lea Stein in a charity shop, snap it up. Her stuff is fabulous and is never out of style.

You should - brooches are fun!! And still mostly inexpensive.

I've got a whole collection of them that I've collected over the years from charity shops & vintage/antique fairs. I like to cluster them on a coat label or similar, in themes/colours.

I wear a group of three different 1950s gold-tone starburst-type brooches on my favourite fake fur coat. I've got a few little silver & enamel butterfly ones that I used to wear clustered at the neck of a pussybow blouse (might revisit that look!). And I have some multicoloured crystal Bohemian brooches that I wear on a silk dress.

was about to add I had read brooches are back with a bang, (if they every truly left) but someone’s already done it !

WerzMyHedAt · 04/04/2026 06:11

Brooches are about to make a huge comeback, if not already.

The dress looks lovely and elegant

I get what people are saying about pashminas

But actually I think they're wrong now that things have changed. Last 2 summers there has been a trend for strapless dresses with a matching scarf that drapes over the back. In the winters, there's been a lot of coats with draping scarf material attached. I think a pashminas could be turned into a 2026 nod towards this sort of thing.

Styled/draped in a modern way, with a brooch, would be sooo perfect

Amazing! I bought one of those fox faces about ten years ago from a vintage and antique stall. I’d never seen anything like it before and didn’t know who’d made it. Thank you so much!

HatStickBoots · 04/04/2026 08:02

Pashminas are mentioned in the Vogue article. I last wore mine over twenty years ago because it was so pretty and practical on a summer evening when no jacket required.

Ihateslugs · 04/04/2026 08:36

My son is getting married on 1st May and I’ve not even thought about wearing something over my dress! He’s getting married in a registry office then we are walking to a near by hotel for a meal. Other than buying a plain coloured umbrella ( my telescopic one is a multicoloured one with a frill!) I would prefer to shiver when outdoors! Luckily the dress code for the registry office is smart casual as they are having a more formal evening reception the day after when I’ll be staying at the venue so no jacket needed.

I’ll have to ask my fashion guru aka my sister what she is wearing, I doubt she’ll be wearing a jacket!

jeaux90 · 04/04/2026 10:41

I would wear a knee length fitted jacket or oversized blazer over that it depends on whether you are going for a classy or funky look

Clarinet1 · 04/04/2026 11:04

I wouldn’t spend much on something specifically for the dress and the wedding as you never know what the weather will be doing by early May; It might be blazing. Some kind of shawl or wrap would be my suggestion. Maybe in green or gold.

Pearlstillsinging · 04/04/2026 14:00

I love the dress and think that the first link to a blue velvet jacket would look great with it.
Who on earth thinks that goose bumps from the cold is a good look?

MrsClattenburg · 04/04/2026 14:12

@Pearlstillsinging not me but who wants to cover up a nice dress?
I'd rather be cold!

Brooches are the bomb, especially ones that might have been owned by your grandparents!
They are good for so many things, impromptu outfit fix (outfix), so much better than a safety pin, brightening things up, pulling things together etc

Wildgoat · 04/04/2026 14:17

I’d also go for a navy velvet blazer, but I’d not go for crushed velvet like the first one, but just normal velvet.they are on trend and can be worn after with jeans etc. if you’re buying second hand you can have a look on vinted as plenty there,
