What socks work with chunky T-bar loafers and ankle-length trousers?

I got a pair of these shoes which I love and which are pretty comfy. With dresses i can wear tights, but I'm struggling to know what socks to wear with them for trousers. I hate pop socks as i find they usually dig into my leg and/or my trouser legs get stuck on them which is annoying. And most of my trousers are about ankle length so they'll be on show when I sit down. Any suggestions which will be comfortable? I usually just buy sports socks which really don't work! This seems like a silly question now I've written in down but hopefully someone can help me work out the best option.

I basically don’t own any shoes because I have no idea about what socks to wear them with in case my ankles ever end up on display 😂 although this is unlikely to happen as I prefer my trousers to be touching the floor to reduce the risk of a draft!
dds have the ankle dm socks with frills which they wear with their variety of doc shoes, they actually have quite a few frills pairs from different brands. How do you feel about frilly socks? I think I’d feel a bit silly in them really cos they’re a bit twee but then the shoes are also quite twee. I do like them, they’re just not very me.

Imicola · 28/03/2026 20:16

I've certainly never considered frilly socks but I have seen them on other people (mostly children/ young adults in real life). Not sure... they'd probably need to be very minimally frilly and dark grey perhaps. I'm heading to John Lewis tomorrow so will see what options they have

What's wrong with normal ankle socks?!

TheFaithfulWeaver · 28/03/2026 20:20

Ooh! I really love those.

I wear this a lot for work. I tend to wear novelty socks, but in muted colours. Yesterday, I wore grey moleskin ankle length trousers, black t bar DMs and burgundy socks with various types of squirrels all over them. I buy them from Soctopus; they're also comfy and quite hard wearing.

I do both work with children and accept my clothes are not to everyone's taste though...

Ooh I like those shoes! I think you could definitely wear ankle socks, whether frilled or not!

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 28/03/2026 20:21

Oliver Bonas do some nice semi sheer ankle socks that might work.

Monolithique · 28/03/2026 20:22

Adult Dd has similar shoes and wears with funky ankle socks - eg white with floral motifs

RegularNameSwitcher · 28/03/2026 20:24

I have these exact shoes too - I love them! I usually wear them with ankle socks, either oatmeal or gray work quite well as a neutral colour with the red. I’ve tried experimenting with colours but haven’t found one that works well with the red

Imicola · 28/03/2026 20:25

So just normal thin ankle socks then rather than chunky socks? I actually haven't worn that type of sock in about 20 years! In my mind they are always too tight around my ankle, perhaps i have cankles...

I think you could wear thicker soft socks slouched down if more comfortable?

I always get compliments on them...Quite tempted to buy the green as well! I was thinking black or grey, but oatmeal is a good suggestion. Versatile.

It may be an age thing but I’m early 50’s and would wear those socks that don’t show. I’m sure ankle socks would look awesome though if they were statement socks

This is what i tried originally, but I ended up with blisters, they didn't quite work.

The width I would say is average, fine for me but I guess they may be too narrow for wide feet.

Dd has similar and wears these type of socks

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0F99DLDMS?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

she works in a professional setting, think accountants or similar. She wears them with trousers or long skirts and dresses.

I think this might be the answer

I have a pair of Timberland Mary janes in a similar colour and have loved wearing them through winter with tights but like the way they look with trousers too, I haven't been able to get the sock right

I have thos3 shoes. Any socks, I match mine to either my hat, or my bag or my top. Today they were pink and blue stripes to match my beret, yesterday nude with Easter chicks I also have nude with green flowers. I wore them for a job interview Thursday with black socks with red spots.

What about some Pantherella collaborations, like these, for a retro look?

I also like the polka dot Oliver Bonas ones.

I’d wear knee socks at this time of year, so no cold gap. Uniqlo do some fine ones in different colours, including a burgundy HeatGen thermal one which would match your shoes.

I find the key is either to match the sock colour to the shoes or to the trousers so as not to break up the line of your legs. Or make the trousers and the shoes the same colour and add a pop of something different with the socks.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I don’t do that, I end up feeling like a toddler.

BedlamEveryday · 29/03/2026 07:29

i was going to suggest footsies because I thought you didn’t want your socks to show, but clearly misunderstood the purpose of your question!

cannaethink · 29/03/2026 10:41

If you find socks too tight around the ankle you could try lettuce top socks. I have these from H&M but also tk maxx had loads in too. They look less frilly once on!
