What socks work with chunky T-bar loafers and ankle-length trousers?

Imicola · 28/03/2026 20:08

I got a pair of these shoes which I love and which are pretty comfy. With dresses i can wear tights, but I'm struggling to know what socks to wear with them for trousers. I hate pop socks as i find they usually dig into my leg and/or my trouser legs get stuck on them which is annoying. And most of my trousers are about ankle length so they'll be on show when I sit down. Any suggestions which will be comfortable? I usually just buy sports socks which really don't work! This seems like a silly question now I've written in down but hopefully someone can help me work out the best option.

So just normal thin ankle socks then rather than chunky socks? I actually haven't worn that type of sock in about 20 years! In my mind they are always too tight around my ankle, perhaps i have cankles...

If you find them too tight, either get men’s ones if your feet are big enough, or look for loose top diabetic socks.

HippeePrincess · 29/03/2026 13:21

If you google “sheer patterned socks” that’s what I wear with a similar shoe, or lace/fishnet socks.

Denim4ever · 29/03/2026 13:28

I can't get past the fact that someone has decided a t bar shoe can be described as a loafer. Nearly on a par with Chanel style jackets I saw described as collarless blazers.

Flatinbed · 29/03/2026 15:05

Great shoes OP! I love them. I'd go for black or neutral socks.

This is what i tried originally, but I ended up with blisters, they didn't quite work.

M&S do good ballerina socks in cotton with a patch of silicone on the heel so they don’t slip down

I have Dr Martens loafers and I wear them with faux Argyle socks like these:

The quality isn’t amazing (these are supposedly men’s 6-11 but I’m a 5 and they fit fine) but they have great vibrant colours and look smart with an oxblood shoe.

It may be an age thing but I’m early 50’s and would wear those socks that don’t show. I’m sure ankle socks would look awesome though if they were statement socks

Not an age thing, I'm early 50s too and would Def be showing my socks!
I feel like those shoes would really suit some statement socks too. Frills, patterns, accent colours....take your pick!

Ngl, I'm jealous. They are lovely shoes, sadly I don't do leather though.

I went to John Lewis and got a few pairs today. Normal ankle socks , but as usual if i pull them up they feel too tight at the top. Plus some ribbed grey and navy wool socks which i can fold over at the top, which I think look quite good. I saw some of the socks which are meant to be looser at the top, but they didn't have my size.

What do you wear in cold weather?
I can't not wear socks in winter. My feet get too cold.

watfordmummy · 30/03/2026 06:51

I have bought snug socks (cables here) and love the colours

I was going to say I think I'd wear them with thick, ribbed socks (not necessarily wool; Uniqlo have cotton ones that are nice). I'd pull up the socks so even when the trousers ride up you still get leg coverage. Neutral/dark colours like grey or black would work, but I'm also envisaging them with a mustard yellow or a teal or turquoise for more contrast.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/03/2026 08:59

Just clicked on your shoe link and I wear them with exactly the same shoe!

Shimmerandshine21 · 30/03/2026 09:31

I think a pair of thick mustard yellow or darkish green would look nice

Lemonyyy · 30/03/2026 10:35

No helpful advice, just here to say the shoes are gorgeous!

henlake7 · 30/03/2026 15:30

If you are worried about them being too tight try the cheap Primark multipacks. They come in some cute patterns and colours and dont fall down.
I bought my mum some and she confirmed they werent too tight on her cankles (her medication does her dirty and makes her ankles swell!).😄

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2026 15:55

You've enabled me, OP! I've just bought a pair in the olive green, they are beautiful.

One pair is £15! And you can pick them up more cheaply on eBay/Vinted. I try to buy cotton/wool socks anyway (Uniqlo are a fave), but love the patterns/colours of these. No more than a posh lipstick!

I also try to buy Wolford/Falke tights (TK Maxx/sale/eBay or Vinted), as they may be expensive but they literally last for decades!!

I wear the same length trousers with chunky shoes. I’ve started buying cotton/wool socks that coordinate with either the colour of the trousers or the colour of the top I’m wearing. I have lots now in green, grey, burgundy, camel, you name it. Look for longer length, and don’t worry too much if an inch of skin shows when you sit down.

I like Uniqlo for their colour choice, quality & value.
