What do you think of these sandals?

I've been trawling shops both online and on the high street looking for some sandals that are 1) brown 2) closed-toe 3) not too chunky but with no thin straps that cut into your feet 4) not heeled but also not pancake-flat with no support 5) not liable to slip off when you're walking. I want them for going on a spring city break in the south of France so that I can do a fair bit of walking during the day but they would also be ok to wear with a dress for the evenings.

I eventually found these ones on Vinted and they seemed to tick all the boxes, but when I was looking at the pictures it wasn't at all obvious that they had the elastic strap across the top. Now that I've tried them on I'm not sure if they look OK or if the strap spoils it a bit. It's the colour and the fact it's elastic - if it had just been the same coloured leather as the shoes it would have been fine. What do people think? Keep looking?

Who knew there were so many ugly sandals in the world. A special mention for those Keen ones - who on earth was wearing those? Thankfully, I have never seen anyone in real life wearing them!

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 28/03/2026 18:50

This thread 😂

OP, your ankles don’t look fat at all, I didn’t even know ankles could be fat 😵‍💫

EasterMegg · 28/03/2026 18:53

I am not a closed sandal person but Camper is great for comfort and reliable quality.

These are weird but someone might like them!

I didn't want to be disparaging about people who had made an effort to find and post links, but really... I was astounded that someone could think the original sandals were so hideous that they should be binned rather than donated, and then recommend those Keen things instead. They might have been 'fashionable' at some point but they're almost gratiitously ugly. I thought mine were better than that, tragic as they were.

I like them too but not sure I'd spend £83 on a website I've never heard of?

art are a Spanish company 🤷 been around for years. Pretty legit I'd say.

mathanxiety · 28/03/2026 19:48

Sorry, but those sandals are not nice even without the elastic strap.

mathanxiety · 28/03/2026 19:50

@ArwenUndomniel

Yes, Keen sandals are gratuitously ugly. That is their selling point. They appeal to UMC Americans who don't need to or want to look anything other than practical.

You've never spent time with UMC Americans then :-)

I have no idea what they are.

This Etsy seller has been in my favourites for so long - maybe this summer! You might find something you like among this lot? https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MacarenaCollection

These are gorgeous and on my summer sandal list.

@ArwenUndomniel

I think you might find what you're looking for if you go on eBay UK and look up Land's End women's sandals.

Ceejaydoubleyew · 28/03/2026 20:32

Check out Free Spirit, lots of variety and so comfortable. They used to trade under Earth Spirit. Go direct to their own website for the biggest selection. Not overly expensive either.

Dreadful. Sorry

I am odd in quite liking them so had a look on the pavers website - what about these OP?

They're quite nice - it's unclear from the picture how supportive the sole is, but I'm going into town today so I might pop into Pavers and see if they have any in. Thanks!

I don't think I can stretch to £245 but they do look very comfortable, if a bit too chunky for me.

If you like them and they are comfortable wear them. Who cares what other people think. No one is going to be looking at your feet!

People look at your feet all the time. You look at your feet. Having stylish footwear is important to many people.

Because they are awful and no one should have to wear them, as the phrase goes don’t give to strangers what you wouldn’t give to someone you know

Someone might like them and they could be just what they are looking for. People have different tastes

I look at peoples shoes before I look at their faces. I love shoes.

For anyone interested, I went into town today and had a look around various shops. I tried on the M&S fisherman's sandals just out of interest to see how they looked, and they were so instantly comfortable that I ended up getting them 🤦‍♀️. They're definitely not things of beauty but I'll be able to walk all day in them. I'll just have to try to style out the slight Eastern European lobster catcher vibe...

Nice shoes...

And very much non-fat ankles.
