What do you think of these sandals?

I've been trawling shops both online and on the high street looking for some sandals that are 1) brown 2) closed-toe 3) not too chunky but with no thin straps that cut into your feet 4) not heeled but also not pancake-flat with no support 5) not liable to slip off when you're walking. I want them for going on a spring city break in the south of France so that I can do a fair bit of walking during the day but they would also be ok to wear with a dress for the evenings.

I eventually found these ones on Vinted and they seemed to tick all the boxes, but when I was looking at the pictures it wasn't at all obvious that they had the elastic strap across the top. Now that I've tried them on I'm not sure if they look OK or if the strap spoils it a bit. It's the colour and the fact it's elastic - if it had just been the same coloured leather as the shoes it would have been fine. What do people think? Keep looking?

@ArwenUndomniel , your sandals are ok. Take them on holiday. They might be considered cool and trendy 80s retro there.

If you are doing a lot of walking I'd wear trainers but that's me.

I spend a lot of time ordering things and sending things back

Same. And the Celtic fisherman's ones were ones I tried and sent back. They looked unflattering when on my feet.

I’ve got a pair of Adidas Terrex Hydroterra closed toe sandals and they're fantastic. They still do them and mine are about to see their third summer.

StationJack · 28/03/2026 14:15

I've seen the Celtic & Co sandals and they are meh.

I've got the Celtic & co sandals and really like them. Wore them all summer.

Malinia · 28/03/2026 14:53

I don't get why people hate them so much, I like them apart from the strap. For £3 I would just cut the strap off and see if they still stayed on.

Muffinmam · 28/03/2026 16:01

These shoes are utterly hideous.

CeffylCoch · 28/03/2026 16:04

Hard no from me

I can only blame what must have been a very good photo on the Vinted listing. The strap was hidden and they honestly didn't look that well worn. I'd only buy second hand if they were very lightly "used", but I think I'll probably go for the Celtic and Co and buy new. Lesson learned.

How did they hide the strap?

I have to be honest, I’m really squeamish about used footwear as said, the thought of some randoms bare feet in shoes, and then putting them on my own really bothers me, that, underwear and swimwear is something I’d not ever buy second hand.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 09:01

I’m a little squeamish about second hand footwear, and those are clearly well worn, if you can afford more, why would you opt for someone’s really old shoes?

Exactly. A shoe is not something to share. Can’t be washed. Molds to the foot. We grew up wearing second hand clothes but we were never given second hand shoes for that reason.

the sandals are so depressing. They need to go in the bin. My advice a nice pair of trainers. Good for your feet. Fashionable. Great for walking. Can be dressed up for evening if you get the right ones. Otherwise for an ugly pair of sandals get crocs. They serve a purpose and can be washed

Was also going to suggest the Siebel Rosalie, but if for some reason they don't suit, I came across Rieker's Maria, which is somewhat similar, although not available in straight brown (cream and beige or olive and brown are the closest options).

I've just seen stuff like this in the garden centre. 😬

corblimeyguvnr · 28/03/2026 17:12

@ArwenUndomniel I have to say those are some of the weirdest shoes I have ever seen! Truly horrible.

Ophy83 · 28/03/2026 17:17

You could try Moshulu. I have some of their ginger ale sandals and they are the comfiest sandals I own. They are now 10 years old and still going strong.

The ginger ale style is open toe, but these ones are more closed:

Those Keen sandals are literally the ugliest thing I have ever seen. In what world are they fashionable? Where? Please tell me. I like to think I have a good idea of what’s cool and what’s not and I would rather wear ANYTHING than wear those.

OP you have much better taste. And good ankles.

StationJack · 28/03/2026 17:24

@awalkalongthecanal , the Keen ones were fashionable last year.

awalkalongthecanal · 28/03/2026 17:25

Where?? Fashionable for whom?

Honestly, I looked and looked for new ones that met all my criteria and I couldn't find any, so when I saw these and they seemed to have all the requirements, I probably went a bit mad. The strap was sort of tucked into the bottom of the shoe and it looked like it was part of the pattern on the insole. I'd have spotted it if I'd been looking more closely but it wasn't the best photo.

I'm not especially squeamish about second hand shoes and clearly other people aren't either judging by how many are for sale on Vinted and in charity shops. I don't really want to keep going into why I bought the things now that I've accepted it was a mistake and given them away!

The photos on Vinted are often quite poor quality.

Tootyfilou · 28/03/2026 17:44

Grim.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/03/2026 17:49

Im sorry but absolutely no. You could get nicer shoes than that from Damart. They look like charity shop rejects.
I hate being mean but please dont go to France in those.
