What do you think of these sandals?

I've been trawling shops both online and on the high street looking for some sandals that are 1) brown 2) closed-toe 3) not too chunky but with no thin straps that cut into your feet 4) not heeled but also not pancake-flat with no support 5) not liable to slip off when you're walking. I want them for going on a spring city break in the south of France so that I can do a fair bit of walking during the day but they would also be ok to wear with a dress for the evenings.

I eventually found these ones on Vinted and they seemed to tick all the boxes, but when I was looking at the pictures it wasn't at all obvious that they had the elastic strap across the top. Now that I've tried them on I'm not sure if they look OK or if the strap spoils it a bit. It's the colour and the fact it's elastic - if it had just been the same coloured leather as the shoes it would have been fine. What do people think? Keep looking?

There are some unstylish shoes on this thread.

You said it. I think I'm in footwear hell.
OP - yes, give those to the Hospice shop, hopefully they can make a few quid.
I would recommend looking at Clarks, they usually have a good selection of decent, comfortable shoes.
Or just go with trainers.

Is that a vampire wearing them?

StationJack · 27/03/2026 23:06

@LeticiaMorales , some of the suggestions make the OP's £3 ones look not so bad.

So true 😬

How very rude of you. I'm very pale but it's one of the few things about my appearance that don't bother me.

What about these from La Redoute?

Would these Fisherman Sandals in brown work from M&S?

I tried these on and can report that they are excellent for a wider foot and have no cushion or sole support. Very pretty though.

Tonissister · 27/03/2026 23:17

I think the Joseph Seibels ones upthread are nice. Really plain, classic city sandals in tan. They look comfortable too, not like those hard soles totally flat sandals that are impossible to walk in.

MidnightMeltdown · 27/03/2026 23:17

They look like old lady shoes to me, but maybe that’s because when I was a kid in the 90s, this is the sort of thing that all the mums and nans were wearing. I guess the strap gives them a slightly more modern twist, but they aren’t to my taste.

LeticiaMorales · 27/03/2026 23:18

Your feet and ankles don't look at all fat, I think you could wear most shoes. Do they have to be closed toe?

Link didn’t work but it’s keen footwear, very fashionable practical shoes

My god, you can't say 'very fashionable' about these, not even just 'fashionable', they're hideous.

These are comfy for miles of walking and nice on:

Those are actually nice rather than a compromise between nice and c omfortable.

They were last year's trend.

BusterGonad · 28/03/2026 00:30

Agreed. Hideous

BusterGonad · 28/03/2026 00:31

My previous comment was about the Keen sandals link. They are absolutely vile. If that's, fashion then I don't want to know.

pandora206 · 28/03/2026 00:39

Fitflop Gracie Fisherman's sandals are very comfortable and contoured.

Aco8171 · 28/03/2026 03:25

I do like those actually. They might be the winners so far, although I'm not ruling out the deck shoe option either.

I could do something that's semi-open or peep-toe but my feet and legs are not nice - apparently too pale as well as fat now...

For £3 you cut strap off and put in an insert to make the shoe more secure.
they are pavers who tend to make shoes for complicated feet
