Do I need separate SPF or is moisturiser with SPF enough?

Can someone explain all this spf stuff?

I thought we were just supposed to use moisturiser with an SPF in it but now I'm seeing we're meant to have a separate one.

An influencer I like had an SPF spray but then she said it was just a top up.

We used to just wear suncream didn't we? I can't keep up! 🙈

I just have moisturiser with SPF in it - No7

Unless it's like really really sunny in which case I use separate

I don't really understand the top up thing I wouldn't want to pile too much stuff on top of my skin

Simonjt · 26/03/2026 22:03

Moisturiser is fine, but you have to use a sufficient amount, so two finger lengths as a minimum and reapplied on a regular basis.

FairyBatman · 26/03/2026 22:05

Suncream needs topping up through the day if it’s sunny (or even if it’s not sunny f you are high risk for skin cancers) the SPF in your moisturiser will wear off after a few hours.

If you can find an SPF you like and your make up sits nicely on them do that as the protection will be superior

Garnier do a nice one which is around a tenner. There are some nice and reasonably priced K Beauty brands too.

I imagine that influencer you mentioned was doing some sort of paid promotion

Oh probably, yes..I just didn't understand what it's for! So when we say an SPF we just mean suncream...and we use that instead of moisturiser because it's better than just a moisturizer with an SPF.?

And maybe the spray thing she was using was good over makeup because that would usually be tricky with suncream?

Too many products these days. I don't know what half of them are 🙈

Yes literally a good sun cream ideally formulated for the face as it’s going to have a lighter textured be formulated to sink in quickly

bunnyvsmonkey · 26/03/2026 22:38

I wear a moisturiser with SPF for every day WFH, going to work, shops etc. But if it gets sunny I will wear ultrasun instead for the school runs (40 min walk which can be in the blazing sun) and on holidays.

I also stop my tret for the summer months.

Theyneverknow · 27/03/2026 06:00

Always a separate sunscreen. Moisturiser with spf in is not enough- it will not give you the sun protection factor that it advertises in a couple of pumps.

SPF on moisturiser is helpful but I would not ever rely on this (I have pigmentation so can visibly see when a sunscreen isn’t protecting enough as this darkens)

Morepositivemum · 27/03/2026 06:12

I’ve heard a number of people say moisturisers and make up don’t have enough spf in it. I always wear it separate- moisturiser then spf then primer then make up

WarriorN · 27/03/2026 06:28

Bog standard altruist 50 is excellent.

In the summer I use a tiny amount of cerave lotion and then cerave 50 as a moisturiser. Altruist on top.

when do you deem it summer? I only started tret last September

Beauty of joeson do an amazing one. Korean, sits great under makeup/on its own.

WarriorN · 27/03/2026 06:41

I like altruist as it’s been developed by a U.K. dermatologist.

I know another one who trained with him who is now well jel of his - what they thought at the time was silly - fantastic success!

And it donates to a charity in Africa for children with albinism. And it’s cheap 😁

I had a sample of this in an amazing bargain beauty kit from StyleKorean last year and it was really lovely, felt so nourishing yet light.

I now switch use a decent face SPF exclusively as it seems pointless to also moisturise (I use Vit C before too). Then if I am going out in the pm will use a regular moisturiser. Then serum and night cream for bed.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/03/2026 09:43

I always use a separate spf over my moisturiser and top it up throughout the day if need be. Has really helped my skin.

kiki8436 · 27/03/2026 09:46

SPF needs topping up. I don’t tend to go out until midday so I use a separate one because I will moisturise in the morning and then pop the SPF on before I go out. Still on mission to find one that isn’t greasy and horrible feeling!

bunnyvsmonkey · 27/03/2026 09:52

WarriorN · 27/03/2026 06:32

Well for me when I am forced to spend more than 20 mins outside. That is typically my actual summer holiday abroad. But also when the UV index creeps up I would lay off the tret. As much as I want fewer wrinkles, its not worth the risk of sun damage.

minipie · 27/03/2026 09:55

Bear in mind that a lot of the people who say you need a separate SPF will be using tretinoin or other retinoids. These makes the skin more UV sensitive so in that case they do need more SPF.

If you’re not using this or any other actives that cause UV sensitivity, I personally reckon a moisturiser with SPF is ok. I usually have moisturiser with SPF and then a BB cream with SPF so a double layer, I don’t want to be adding a third layer to this especially as I get acne.

Wtafmakeitstop · 27/03/2026 10:23

Having recently had pre-cancerous skin damage treated (I’m fairly skinned but not a sunbather), I’ve now been told to wear protection at all times and that moisturiser and foundation with spf are not enough. My dermatologist recommended Heliocare products which I like as they don’t feel greasy and play well with other make-up.

OakElmAsh · 27/03/2026 10:27

I wear sunscreen every day (the beauty of joseon one), but I can't get my head around reapplication... I do my skincare, spf & makeup in the morning then I head off to work for the day and never think about sunscreen again.... what are people doing about reapplying? Taking off makeup and redoing the whole lot in the middle of the day?? Slipping something on over makeup? Using one of those sprays? I feel like those surely aren't giving a lot of protection?

Blarn · 27/03/2026 10:29

I know we are told to wear spf all year round but I don't in winter. From about this time of year I start to add it over my moisturiser to areas of my face that catch the sun, so bridge of nose, cheeks and just above my eyebrows. In the summer I switch from moisturiser in the day to suncream. The garnier one linked Ave us nice and I have a loreal one that I really like too, neither are greasy and my make up goes on fine.

I can't gey on with that spray garner one that apparently goes over make up, it just stings and covers my skin in this visible white dusty grease, I don't know why it's so bad for me!

UmberMoose · 27/03/2026 10:37

I prefer a separate one and keep topping it up throughout the day. I feel the protection is better when you use it separately. So here is my routine that I follow with that:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face and micellar water
Sebamed clear face gel,
LRP spf
Evening:
LRP moisturizer,
Started with Tretinoin (0.025) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

On the days I desperately need topping up (such as sitting in the garden, on holiday etc) I’m likely not wearing makeup. I would top up if I’m just in the office.

gillefc82 · 27/03/2026 13:30

Two finger rule for the amount of spf needed on your face. Anything less and you aren’t getting the protection it claims. Usually, you won’t use that much moisturiser or foundation so would always recommend separate spf.

Korean and Japanese brands are now available online and in boots and they are very good and leave no white cast.
