Do I need separate SPF or is moisturiser with SPF enough?

Can someone explain all this spf stuff?

I thought we were just supposed to use moisturiser with an SPF in it but now I'm seeing we're meant to have a separate one.

An influencer I like had an SPF spray but then she said it was just a top up.

We used to just wear suncream didn't we? I can't keep up! 🙈

Don't waste your time with sunscreen sprays, research has shown that it's impossible to get the full effect of an SPF from them. Same with foundations that contain sunscreen - you will never apply enough to give you decent protection without looking like you're caked in makeup!

I used tinted SPF. (Super goop but I think Inkey list also do a good one). My skin has never looked better-I rate it very highly. I work outdoors all day so needed something decent-it’s factor 30.

I read an article in harpers & queen by a dermatologist saying wear sunblock every single day. They weren’t selling or recommending a particular product just high spf with high uva protection. Uv is radiation so it stacked up that it would damage dna. Newby Hands was a great beauty editor, she was ahead of her time.

Ive been laughed at for it over the years even by friends who were beauticians 🤷🏻‍♀️

I started using Skin + Me daily doser in January to help my cystic-acne prone 44yr old skin, which was super greasy (though realised thanks to Mumsnet the greasiness was due to taking high strength biotin supplements !).

Because it has tretinoin in it, I need to wear SPF50 daily. Because of my acne and scarring and generally awful skin, I need to wear foundation most days.

So I in the morning I wash with CereVe face wash in the shower > apply The Ordinary Azelaic acid > moisturiser (I like Estee Lauder's DayWear) > SPF > foundation. Only use primer if I'm going dancing or something.

Have literally just had this Beauty of Joseon SPF50 delivered after reading all the hype on Mumsnet about it:

Was using La Roche Pose Anthelios, but it's from last spring/summer and know it goes off after 12 months so don't want to risk it not working and getting sun damage.

I know what you mean about allll the steps OP! I have dabbled with ditching the moisturiser step some days, and seemed ok tbh. Will see how this new one is later today!

At night I cleanse thoroughly, use daily doser (containing tret amongst other acids), wait 10 mins, apply serum (Aveeno one), night moisturiser (Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask).

I have terrible genes and terrible skin but doing this the past three months, plus eating more cleanly and hydrating properly, has really helped. Plus I like doing it!

Thank you for this thread - lots of helpful information. I use a moisturiser with SPF 50 but it seems I also need a separate SPF. What order should these 2 products be applied? (I don’t wear make-up often.)

WarriorN · 29/03/2026 07:54

I’d do moisturiser first then spf

Always moisturiser first

I use ultraviolette spf 50 (protects against visible light too) and then La Roche posay anthelios tinted suncream spf 50 on top. I presume this is enough?!
