Do people really apply serum / face oil directly to their face, or is it just on tiktok?

I don't wear much make up but I find make up tiktoks oddly fascinating. I'm always impressed at how some people can transform themselves so radically. I'm also mind boggled by how much make up people apply.

But what I find oddest is the way everyone trickles serum or oils directly onto their face so it dribbles down their cheeks, before rubbing in with their fingers. It would never have occurred to me to do anything other than put it on my fingers and then apply. Do people really do this "in real life" or is it just a tiktok trend?

Its so dumb

NerdyBird · 26/03/2026 19:25

I’ve always assumed it’s because they think viewers want them to? I use serums and don’t do it like that.

MeganM3 · 26/03/2026 19:27

I do put vitamin C serum directly into my face. A drop on each cheek then forehead & rub it in.

Wellthisisdifficult · 26/03/2026 19:28

I assume is supposed to be sexually suggestive?

CheeseWisely · 26/03/2026 19:29

I put it directly on my face from the dropper, then rub it in. I do not film it for TikTok.

plims · 26/03/2026 19:29

Do you mean with the little droppers that come in some serums? I think they’re designed to be used like that.

mathanxiety · 26/03/2026 19:30

It's a lot easier to show how much to use by putting it directly on the face.

I dot it on my face and then rub it in.

WonsWoo · 26/03/2026 19:36

I apply it direct with a dropper if it comes with one.

Gowlett · 26/03/2026 19:39

I’ve never seen TikTok, that sounds mad…
I drop it into my palms, rub together, then slap it onto my face. Same with moisturiser.

TappyGilmore · 26/03/2026 19:41

I put it straight onto my face from the dropper, it has never occurred to me not to.

AlwaysTheRenegade · 26/03/2026 19:44

There's a dermatologist with an account on Insta called dermangelo, and he always says "don't touch the dropper directly to your face". I think it's because of bacteria.

I did wonder that, and then hoped I was being ridiculous for it to cross my mind

But why? Have you always done that? Is it because you've seen others do it?

I drop onto my fingers without touching the end of the dropper, and then rub or dot onto my face and then massage or pat into my skin.

marcyhermit · 26/03/2026 19:47

I put tinted serum straight on to my face, I guess because it has a dropper it seems easier? It doesn't run down my cheeks though 😂

TomatoSandwiches · 26/03/2026 19:48

I rub any excess into my neck and hands, which has helped them remain quite nice.

CatsLikeBoxes · 26/03/2026 19:51

TappyGilmore · 26/03/2026 19:41

I put it straight onto my face from the dropper, it has never occurred to me not to.

But why? I've watched people do it, and they manage it gracefully, but I would expect it would dribble down my face into my eyes or off my chin had I not seen it's possible to avoid this. Even if I'd ever thought of applying it in this way.

I guess since most moisturisers come in pots, it's normal to apply it with fingers, so that's what seems obvious for everything else too.

Oh yes I do that, with an optimistic ambition that my hands will reap some kind of benefit.

I also drop it from the dropper directly onto my face (one drop on each cheek, forehead and chin). I’ve never thought to do it any other way. I’ve never been on TikTok.

Mt563 · 26/03/2026 19:56

Straight to face for me. To be honest never looked at how to apply beyond instructions on bottle. I tip my face up a little and don't use more than a drop on forehead and each cheek. Fingers to rub in. No running.

If it dribbles down your face - you are using too much. The dropper are designed so you know how much to use and spot it around your face in little drops. The instructions tell you to do this (or at least the ones I use do).

Tiktok videos will be doing it to get men to watch their videos like @Wellthisisdifficult said.

Rounder888 · 26/03/2026 19:59

I didn’t know people did it any other way? I drop mine on my face in the areas I need it, then rub it in?

TomatoSandwiches · 26/03/2026 19:59

This has sparked a lovely memory of my nan, watching her sit at her dressing table with all of her crystal and mother of pearl pots and trinkets twisting her capsules of royal jelly and oils, rubbing it into her hands to warm, patting it into her face looking at me in the mirror telling me what and why she was doing with her hair in rollers 😍

I mean, if I'd ever contemplated this method, I would have dismissed it, as I would have assumed it would be messy - but til I saw people on tiktok I never even imagined doing it.

It's pretty 🤢 to think this is meant to be erotic though

Yes I use serum and use the dropper directly onto my face.

As other posters have suggested, if you out it in your hands it is really hard to judge what is too much/too little.
