Do people really apply serum / face oil directly to their face, or is it just on tiktok?

I don't wear much make up but I find make up tiktoks oddly fascinating. I'm always impressed at how some people can transform themselves so radically. I'm also mind boggled by how much make up people apply.

But what I find oddest is the way everyone trickles serum or oils directly onto their face so it dribbles down their cheeks, before rubbing in with their fingers. It would never have occurred to me to do anything other than put it on my fingers and then apply. Do people really do this "in real life" or is it just a tiktok trend?

I've never thought of putting it on my fingers first, always drop it straight onto my face from the dropper. The dropper doesn't touch my skin so there's no contamination issue.
Is it a generational thing?

I'm quite old, so maybe!

I also drop it from the dropper directly onto my face (one drop on each cheek, forehead and chin). I’ve never thought to do it any other way. I’ve never been on TikTok.

Same

This is a bizarre thread. The dropper is intended to be used to apply directly to the face; serums are too light to be put on your hands first, you’ll waste a lot of product.

There is no dribbling if it is put on in the right amount ie one application of the dropper per area of face.

I’m amazed OP finds this so hard to contemplate.

No it's not! You can't keep touching your face with the same dropper without potentially causing problems.

TFImBackIn · 26/03/2026 21:06

FWIW Aldi sells some really nice serums and they are dirt cheap.

You don’t touch your face with the dropper. You drip it from a few mm away from your face.

Actually I have an Aldi Q10 serum. It's a pump, not a dropper, so is that direct to face too?

I drop it on my face. The dropper doesn’t touch my face. Never been on tictock!

I assume is supposed to be sexually suggestive?

😂 Cripes, I think you may be right, I'd never had thought of that in a million years. I am so bland!

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 26/03/2026 21:17

Its never occurred to me not to put it directly on my face. The dropper doesnt touch my skin.

I thought it was supposed to be dropped on the face? Why would you need to touch the pipette to your skin?

Happyjoe · 26/03/2026 21:19

Always hands/tips of fingers for me because of control - because I don't want a, excess, b, to miss and it to drop elsewhere and c, don't want any of it on my t-zone.

And am old.

Ooopo · 26/03/2026 21:22

I put it straight onto my face with the dropper

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 26/03/2026 21:39

I use a multitude of products and have never applied them straight to my face. It irritates me to see people rubbing the dropper over their face there will be bacteria transferring onto the dropper and then into the rest of the bottle. people on social media always miss bits of their face when they rub it in as well.
I put the product in my hand then into my face/neck

There's a dermatologist with an account on Insta called dermangelo, and he always says "don't touch the dropper directly to your face". I think it's because of bacteria.

Oh I love him. Also Enjoy watching his critics of absolutely mental fridge or draw restocks. Which have nothing to do with skin at all 😄

excelledyourself · 26/03/2026 21:48

I apply it to my hands and then rub in. But maybe I’m wasting it, so will try it with the dropper tomorrow.

Although I have other serums with no dropper, so how am I meant to do that?

And if the dropper touches my face, so what? I’m doing this straight after washing my face?

Bloozie · 26/03/2026 22:17

Yeah, straight to my face to avoid waste - rubbing it in my hands and then on my face is one rub too many. I don't touch the dropper to my skin but I only apply serum to freshly washed skin anyway, so can't see why the world would end if I did.

People who think it looks sexy have dirty minds.

maybe they have a niche side audience 🤣

GlasgowGal2014 · 26/03/2026 22:34

I got new foundation recently that came in a bottle with a dropper and I tried to dribble it straight onto my face like I've seen on social media and some of it ended up on the carpet. I'm back to my old technique of putting it on the back of my hand and applying it from there.

OhFuckyNell · 26/03/2026 22:40

I'm thinking if I use 10 year old tcp and even older sudocrem im not too worried about my skin touching the dropper!

TFImBackIn · 26/03/2026 21:05

You don’t touch your face 🙄 you drop the serum onto your face.

But also - your face is clean when you apply a serum! No bacteria.

Gowlett · 26/03/2026 22:49

Yeah, like others I like to warm the product to sort of prime it to spread around my face. I rub the serum everywhere, not just particular areas. I would rub in moisturiser, foundation the same (I usually mix those together first).
Do palms have pores? (Don’t think so…) None gets wasted, I know the right amount to use. There’s barely a trace left on my hands when I wash them. I find sponges soak up products. Only started using brushes recently.

DeathBanana · 26/03/2026 22:52

I’m a full on Korean multi-step gal, toners, essences, ampoules, serums galore and no, I’m not dropping directly onto my face. It would be awkward and messy

MrsBroccolini · 26/03/2026 22:53

It’s absolutely not done to be sexually suggestive but just not to waste any other product into your hands (and as others have said to better judge quantities). Particularly if something is v liquid, once it’s on your hand it’s almost hard to then get it on your face. I suspect that’s where it arose from and now it just makes just as much sense. I do it and often do my foundation similarly.

GameOfJones · 26/03/2026 23:02

I have tried applying it directly to my face and it seems weird and awkward. With thin serums you have to slightly tip your head back to make sure it doesn't run whilst you do a drop on each cheek and your forehead.

Dropping it onto your fingertips first then applying it like a moisturiser is a far better method IMO so I agree with you OP. I'm in my 30s..... I don't think it's a generational thing.

blythet · 26/03/2026 23:39

i use the dropper on to my face. The serums can be expensive and if you put it on to your hand to then put it on your face you end up wasting some as giu never get 100% of it off your hand. I end up wiping the excess off my hands which seems like a waste
