How can I make my hair grow faster? Hair disaster. :(

What will make my hair grow faster?

Late 40s and my hair is something I pay a lot of attention too. So why I thought it was a good idea to book a spontaneous cut at a new salon on Friday 13th is beyond me.

Long story short, the collarbone length hair I said I wanted to keep has been cut to jaw level, and being round of face it looks horrific. My hair is very think, won’t hold a curl and it’s now so blunt that I’ve literally spent all weekend trying to find ways to style it that don’t look hideous and there aren’t many. 😭

I already take collagen - is there anything else I can do? I hear rosemary oil is good for stimulating hair growth? It will take 6 months to get back to where it was on my usual growth pattern so I need something to give it a boost.

Oh no I hope you haven’t got triangle hair! Can you wear it tied back in the meantime, the front pinned back for a bit of shape?

Sundaynightterrors · 15/03/2026 22:58

similar happened to me earlier this year. I am now 10 weeks on and it has grown and is beginning to feel and look better. It will still take a long time for it to get back to where it was - bra strap length to chin length but I can now look in the mirror without wanting to sob.

Minoxidil hair mousse (Amazon or Vinted), WOW hair thickening oil, WOW hair strengthening oil, Collagen&protein OGX shampoo&conditioner, OGX Argan oil&coconut shampoo, Lee Stafford Hair Grow Fast hair mask, or just a good hair growth and moisturising hair mask, leave in hair growth serum (Rosemary oil and Rice water), MyProtein Hair&Nails gummies, scalp massager, leave a hair mask in over night and use silk hair cap or pillow cases, Heat protect spray (Schwarzkopft, or Beauty Works 10-in-1), good protein&oils in your diet. Protein is the most important. It will usually take 4 to 6 months, but consistent care will show results.

Wow! Thanks for the list. The last thing I need is anything thickening though.

I already have silk pillow cases and heat protectants and have to be careful with masks as they tend to overload my hair and weigh it down more. My hair is coloured so I take great care of it to maintain the colour - I just need to encourage it to grow faster.

I can, but I never usually wear it tied back so it’s going to be really obvious at work etc that something has gone wrong. 😢

I take biotin....I feel it's really made my hair grow faster and stopped it falling out.

You could always buy some clip in extensions

Hankunamatata · 16/03/2026 09:25

Extensions?

makethingshappen · 16/03/2026 10:43

On no that's happened to me before too. Try Kelp tablets. I get them online from Holland and Barrett.

LLJETO · 16/03/2026 10:47

A good massage when you’re shampooing won’t hurt. It stimulates blood flow to the area.

Augustus40 · 16/03/2026 10:54

Eat two cubes of raw jelly a week. Stop once desired effect achieved or your nails will get really strong!

Do you have a hair straightener? If you straighten it I bet it will look lovely for the events. I use frizz ease 3 day straight spray and blow dry straight the day before an event, then straighten on the day. Looks nice and glossy and neat then

I usually wear it straightened (see the “curls don’t hold” comment but it just makes it obvious that it’s jaw length.

OP I feel your pain. For everyday use, so I don't have to look at triangle hair, I've resorted to a wide, smooth fabric, stretchy hair band, knotted at the back. It's been a decent enough tool for me to help during that growing out period, but you have to find one that's comfortable, not too tight.
Hair grows about 1.5 cm/month and grows faster up till about age 30, and in the summer months as opposed to winter. IMO nothing really makes it grow faster, but even a bit longer hair will start to look better. You already take v good care of your hair, so I'm sure it must be in good condition, which is crucial to how it'll look growing out.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 16/03/2026 12:08

I swear by the Lee Stafford hair growth range (not just a mask). My hair grows quickly anyway, but after using this for a few months on already long hair I was astoundeduu by how long it got relatively quickly. It could have been a placebo effect as I didn’t track scientifically, but would definitely recommend. I used shampoo, conditioner and hair mask consistently for a few months.

Isobel201 · 16/03/2026 12:49

It'll probably look okay to everyone else, its just you making it seem worse than it probably is x

Hankunamatata · 16/03/2026 09:25

Extensions?

I have never found any in my (crazy) colour. If I could find good blonde ones I could dye them, but my colour changes with each wash so I don’t think they would work. Plus my hair is so thick and the ends so blunt they wouldn’t be blended in. :-/

I’ll have to check it for sulfates and silicones due to my colour but will take a trip to Boots later.

Had a call with a colleague earlier who said it looked lovely, but I’d tonged it and they’ve all fallen out now. I can’t be redoing my hair every 2 hours.

Any tips for keeping a curl in hair that doesn’t want it?

I'm a hairstylist u literally can't speed it up !
Taking care of of it so it can grow healthy and keep it from splitting is the best way to get it longer ! And best tip is keeping your scalp super clean use a clarifying shampoo once a week or more if u do use alot of products ! Silk bonnets help with friction and good quality shampoo and conditioner and No brushing wet hair always be super gentle ! What a pain thou someone doing that to u!!!! X

Fends · 16/03/2026 16:10

Let’s have a look and we can tell you! I bet it’s much better than you think

worldshottestmom · 16/03/2026 16:48

Dont wash it as long as you can bear each time and never use heat, not even a hair dryer. Make sure you eat a lot of protein too.

Ohplesandbanonos · 16/03/2026 16:52

I take pumpkin seed oil capsules and my hair grows so fast. Collagen, biotin, etc. Also even though you’re growing it still get regular trims, it will stop any splits running up your hair and making it break off shorter.

I usually use very little product as I don’t like the feel of it.

I usually wash twice a week and use the Redken mint shampoo, then the acidic or Wella extreme coloured shampoo and conditioner, then their leave in products. Heat protectant before drying/straightening and a good hair oil (Wella currently) on the ends. Considering the bleaching and heat styling, it’s in amazing condition. The coloured dye is very nourishing too.

I’m a messy sleeper so can’t keep a satin bonnet on but use a silk pillowcase and silk scrunchie to minimise friction.

It sounds daft but my hair is my thing so I do look after it.
