How can I make my hair grow faster? Hair disaster. :(

What will make my hair grow faster?

Late 40s and my hair is something I pay a lot of attention too. So why I thought it was a good idea to book a spontaneous cut at a new salon on Friday 13th is beyond me.

Long story short, the collarbone length hair I said I wanted to keep has been cut to jaw level, and being round of face it looks horrific. My hair is very think, won’t hold a curl and it’s now so blunt that I’ve literally spent all weekend trying to find ways to style it that don’t look hideous and there aren’t many. 😭

I already take collagen - is there anything else I can do? I hear rosemary oil is good for stimulating hair growth? It will take 6 months to get back to where it was on my usual growth pattern so I need something to give it a boost.

I take pumpkin seed oil capsules and my hair grows so fast. Collagen, biotin, etc. Also even though you’re growing it still get regular trims, it will stop any splits running up your hair and making it break off shorter.

It’s not breaking off. It’s been cut off. I don’t need to change how I care for it, I just need it to grow a bit more quickly!

This is what worries me though. I don’t need more hair as I have loads of it - I just need what I have to grow more quickly.

Ok so get yourself some pins and experiment pinning it off your face. I used to do this when I was growing out my cropped hair.

twist a section of hair and pin it and see how it looks.

Seaweed inside and out...pills and shampoo made all my hair grow back really fast after a lot of it fell out during the menopause.

ImNotReallyHere · 16/03/2026 22:57

I almost typed your post two weeks ago and have been googling but not found the answer yet. Like you I went to a new hairdresser on a whim as mine was booked and was going on holiday. I have long hair, all one length and thought nobody could get trimming 2 inches of a straight cut wrong. She has hacked layers in all over and some are v short and I think will take me to Christmas to get it looking ok, albeit shorter than before.

My daughter has suggested massaging rosemary oil in the roots and buying biotin. I can send you the link to the oil but hoping someone on here can recommend a good biotin.

Will also look at the Lee Stafford shampoo as seen that recommended somewhere else.

Like you, I have very thick hair and all the rabbit holes I’ve been down trying to see how to get it to grow quicker seem to focus on people who have hair loss and need thickening which I definitely don’t.

Following and feel your pain

ImNotReallyHere · 16/03/2026 23:15

Oh, just seen the Lee Stafford is another thickening shampoo so no good. Any shampoo suggestions for me and OP?

Holdinguphalfthesky · 17/03/2026 09:49

No growing suggestions, but could you get your regular hairdresser to do something to make it look more acceptable to you while it’s growing out? Cutting into the ends or something to make it fall better?

The other thing I’ve seen recently is people wearing head wraps, could you get into those?

Massive sympathy, I hate it when my hair isn’t right. I realise I have offered suggestions you didn’t ask for, but in case it isn’t possible to make your hair grow out faster…

I don’t have a regular hairdresser anymore as she moved into teaching and doesn’t take clients. :(

Plantur 39 really helped me when my Dad passed away and my hair went horribly thin/straggly and stopped growing from all the stress. It took a few months but then I really noticed lots of new hair growth especially around my forehead.

I feel your pain . When I was a teenager , at the beginning of the summer holidays a neighbour cut my hair too short ,I cried & wore a headscarf for the rest of the summer. I felt like an Amish girl!
My only recommendation is a healthy diet , cold water rinses, scalp massage.

Francestein · 17/03/2026 11:45

Hi I’m a nurse who has come back from severe alopecia. If you use or take minoxidil, your hair will initially shed quite a bit and it will re-grow from your scalp. You need to keep up use forever or it will thin out or shed again. You may find a Derma stamp and some peptide serum to be more helpful. (Not a dermaroller as it tangles and creates uneven injury to the skin.)
Ensure that your scalp is cleansed properly so that there is no buildup. Use a gentle shampoo, focusing on scalp cleansing and rinsing. Then squeeze out excess water and “squish” conditioner into hair while tipped forward, focusing on the ends. After rinsing and detangling, spritz with a leave in conditioner and put up in a microfiber hair towel for 15-30 mins. Use a heat protectant and style until dry.
Use a bonding treatment once a week. Never go to bed with wet hair. Use claw clips instead of elastic to stop hair breakage.

I feel your pain, OP! A few years ago I decided to have a couple of inches off my just below shoulder length hair. My hairdresser (a good friend of mine) lost the plot and ended up cutting too much off and I ended up with a dark brown jaw length bob. I was so upset but she reassured me it looked great and I thought ok, I can work with this. Then my dd (8yo) came home from school and told me I looked like Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) 😭🤣 So that made me feel AMAZING!

Anyway, the long and the short of it (pun not intended) was that 1) dd aside, I got loads of compliments for my hair and everyone told me how much my shorter hair suited me 2) if you take sections and curl them they will drop into a nice wave which breaks up the whole hairstyle so it isn’t so blocky and 3) at that length you will notice the growth a lot quicker than if you had longer hair and the bluntness will soften within a few weeks.

My hair will hold a “nice wave” for approx 38 seconds. 😭

Thank you, but again, I don’t want more hair, just for the hair I have to grow more quickly. And I already do everything in the second part of your post, as I’ve already explained.
