Can you help me with a stylish "layer" for cooler evenings on a European city break?

Going for a couple of nights, day time temp will be 18 hopefully but could be cooler and evenings will drop right down (going early April).going with new-ish partner and want to look half decent! I'm thinking dresses will be my friend as I can wear with trainers during day then dress up a bit with jewellery and different shoes at night...but dont want to spoil this by having to stick a jumper on top!
Am early 50s, size 10, pretty short, fairly "young" style...my dresses are t-shirty / long mainly from h&m , uniqlo etc.
Don't want to fall into mum uniform with trainers and denim jacket ..unless maybe with a lighter, more up to date styled one? Help!

If you do want more of a bomber/sporty style, this is cute. Cotton, quilted & lined.

Well. I'm in Lyon right now. I was here last year and my leather jacket and a cashmere wrap was just fine. This year I've had to bring my ugly puffy, because the daytime is 15 but the windchill has it at about 2 degrees. Fortunately most others are also similarly sartorially attire. Please check the forecast before you travel.

That was my first thought. I hate being cold and would always wear something warm over something stylish. Being cold just makes me miserable and poor company.

Fleurlover · 16/03/2026 11:31

I wear this all the time casual and dressed up https://www.zara.com/uk/en/faux-suede-jacket-with-tabs-p04344150.html?v1=525443228

I’ve been eyeing this up at M&S, I like the defined waist and ‘cape’ plus it’s a short length without being cropped.

I like this a lot - but if it's linen (albeit with a polyester lining), will it be enough in cool evenings?

Actually, I missed the word "linen", mine is this one:

And it is pretty cosy.

Ah, that will make a difference! Twill is very tightly woven.

Silk twill (the kind you get in men's ties) is one of my favourite materials. Not used that often in women's clothing, probably due to the expense. But I have a dress & a couple of skirts & a jacket in it (vintage) & they're fab.

I’ve bought the Tu cropped trench, it’s really lovely and looks far better in real life, very pleased for £36 - why is the 20% off never on when I want to buy anything 😂

Oh i am swooooning over these!! Whistles etc above my budget but could stretch to Zara, M&S etc.
Appreciate all these replies so much and hope someone else is getting a new jacket out of it too!
Taking on board all the weather comments, I hate being cold too, and love sitting outside, would rather be wrapped up having a drink.
Did also get briefly rained on last time I was there so bearing that in mind. if anyone has any of the faux suede options, how does that do in the rain

Hand luggage only so this jacket has to work hard!

Absolutely loving this seasons jackets. if anyone interested, Wears my money is doing spring jackets this week

I am a big fan of cashmere wraps from these guys: https://www.nearlynewcashmere.co.uk/products/copy-brand-new-mediteranean-blue-recycled-cashmere-wrap

Can be a scarf or a wrap. So warm and so light. Great for a ‘maybe’ layer..

Fully back that! Cashmere wrap or scarf all the way, also much less akward to carry around. You could also have an oversized, thin but warm cashmere jumper or cardigan - I sometimes wear my cashmere jumper as a scarf in a very preppy way, again, an easy item to carry around.

Also, depending on your style, are you a leather jacket girl? A cool leather jacket could also work with many looks.

Have you looked at TU clothing. Lots of spring jackets at reasonable prices.

BorgQueen · 16/03/2026 19:39

Jesus, those ‘chore jackets’ and bomber jackets look like they’ve come from oxfam in 1982, I’m in my 50’s and wouldn’t be seen dead in one.
A good quality oversized cardi or wrap can’t be beat imho, one that doesn’t crease when you so much as look at it. A mushroom or biscuit colour is timeless and goes with everything.

StylishAndBeautiful · 16/03/2026 19:44

Some of us wouldn't be seen dead in an oversized cardi or wrap.

Some of us wouldn't be seen dead in those colours. Or rather, many of us would look dead in those colours 😁

In other words beige. Boring as fuck and guaranteed to make me look like a corpse.

I Agree!

fuuuuckthis · 16/03/2026 20:00

I don't fancy a biscuit coloured cardigan sorry...but each to their own...I love the sporty bombers and also the chore jackets...and the suedettes...😅
Too much choice
I'd like one of each!

Never. I’m 72 and own several leather jackets. My favourite is an emerald green biker.
