Greasy hair girls

BoyMum100 · 07/03/2026 14:10

I've always had greasy hair and have to wash it every other day which is a pain. On the day I don't wash I have to douse it in dry shampoo and it's definitely not looking it's best.

I have fine hair but lots of it

Has anyone found a shampoo or scalp mask
that actually keeps grease at bay?

Ooh definitely following this. I am exactly the same. And before anyone says to just try not washing it and ride out the grease I CANT. During the pandemic I went 5/6/7 days without washing and never came out the other side of the grease 😂

AtIusvue · 07/03/2026 14:11

Any baby shampoo, double wash.

You still have to wash everyday….but there’s no greasy roots at the end of the day.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 07/03/2026 14:16

i can not get 3maybe 4 days out of my hair without having to use dry shampoo.
i use ouai clarifying shampoo once a month
inbetween I use L’Oréal hydra hyaluronic shampoo and conditioner

i always wash twice and really scrub my scalp. I use minimal styling products to stop my hair looking flat and lank

BoyMum100 · 07/03/2026 16:27

@donotmissyourchancetoblow jealous you can go that long without dry shampoo. I'll give it a go, even when I double wash my hair it doesn't make a difference.

I remember I used a Philip Kingsley scalp mask years ago that made a difference, enough to stop using dry shampoo but sadly they changed the formula.

Honestly I was like you and I started to stretch washes so at first every other day then 3 then 4. Took a couple of months and now I only wash it once a week it’s a game changer! Slick back ponie for those day when your first starting! And keep going with it the oils regulate

Heatedrival · 07/03/2026 16:30

Sorry as someone who is 55 and has always had greasy hair I have found the only way to manage it is to wash it every day.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 07/03/2026 16:33

I have to wash my hair daily. If I don't it's disgusting. Like others I tried to eek it out of that routine in lockdown but I just couldn't. I invest in a nice gentle shampoo and a lightweight conditioner, and extra toner appointments at the hairdressers 🤣🤣

Marmalademorning · 07/03/2026 16:41

I tried going for as long as possible without washing it during maternity leave. It didn’t work and 10 years later I’m still having to wash my long hair every single damn day. I hate it.

Happyandkoiful · 07/03/2026 16:45

I used to use Liz Earle shampoo but I haven't dared buy it since some of the ingredients changed and it started getting bad reviews.
I now use https://www.littlesoapcompany.co.uk/products/eco-warrior-shampoo-bar-100g and I wash and rinse twice. It's the only shampoo I've found since Liz Earle that doesn't leave my fine but greasy hair weighed down and claggy. I can go three or four days between washes (fringe every other day).

What worked for me was the notion that you’re washing your scalp, not your hair. Really scrub at it with your fingertips, especially parting area, round ears, and the thickest part of the nape of your neck.

Let the shampoo do its job on the lengths as it rinses down - no need to ‘wash’ the lengths.

Shampoo twice - those extra 90 seconds buys me another day.

Don’t let conditioner get too high up the lengths.

Agree that too many styling products will make this approach less effective.

I used to wash it every day or at most every other day and day 2 still felt on the edge. I can go four days doing this. Admittedly day 4 is best if I’m wfh. I dry shampoo on day 4 if I’m going out in public.

I'm going to try this! Good tips.

Unfortunately its all hormonal for me. I could easily go 3-4 days when pregnant and my skin cleared up 100% but now I'm back to normal and I just feel better when my hair is freshly washed.

I liked some kerastase products like their scalp mask for irritated scalps but they were so expensive especially used every other day on long hair.

BollyMolly · 07/03/2026 16:58

It’s interesting to hear that extra scalp scrubbing works as I read somewhere not to do that because it stimulates the oil glands. An apple cider vinegar was can help. I bought a spray bottle to dilute it in then squirt it on after shampooing, leave it a few minutes and then hair feels super clean after a good rinse and seems to stay that way for longer.

Parsleyforme · 07/03/2026 17:13

I recently tried this and it was the first time probably ever that my hair wasn’t greasy and gross at the end of the second day. Unfortunately I’ve had to shelve it for now because I have some breakage at the moment and my hair was so clean that all the short hairs were more noticeable on the top of my head. I guess because they were so clean nothing was weighing them down 🤔

I am the same op, and I’ve tried EVERYTHING. Nothing works. It’s either wash every day or a fuck ton of dry shampoo.

Schoolstressed · 07/03/2026 17:21

I’ve exactly the same problem. I’d wash it every day if I could but I don’t have the time. I scrub my scalp all the time but it makes no difference, it’s been like this since I was a child.

Parsleyforme, I’m going to try that shampoo thanks. Did you buy the matching conditioner as well?

Jamfirstest · 07/03/2026 17:24

A scalp brush when I first bought it seemed like a game changer. My scalp never felt so clean. Effect wore off though!

TinyHousemouse · 07/03/2026 17:24

I’m the same and I’ve found Living Proof dry shampoo to be a godsend. No other dry shampoo comes close.

No, this doesn't work for everyone. I tried this for months and my hair never got less oily. In fact, it got worse and a trichologist told me that doing this can cause hair loss if you leave oil and dirt sitting on your scalp because it causes DHT build up and can cause fungal infections.

Yes - not washing my hair leads to it being insanely itchy/ very flaky scalp/ a rash after a longer time and then not even being fully clean after an eventual hair wash. I'm not sure why, but not washing doesn't work for me.

I now wash it every day, super quick, 2min shampoo in shower - and it keeps my scalp healthy and hair fresh. I have very very fine, straight natural hair

It doesn't work because oil production is an internal mechanism thats unrelated to washing. There is no feedback loop. I know this because the only time ive ever not had an oily scalp was both times I was pregnant.

I think the people who find not washing helps them are people who are probably dont naturally have oily scalps but are instead, using a lot of products on their hair and so when they stop weighing their hair down it looks better.

Oh wow me too - when pregnant I could go a week without washing my hair and it wasn't greasy at all. Only time in my life

Jamfirstest · 07/03/2026 17:41

Just want to add that half my problem is I can’t leave my scalp alone. I could I reckon go 3 days without washing my hair if I didn’t touch it at all.
Also if you have blonde hair you can use baby powder instead of dry shampoo it has the same effect and it’s cheaper.

Fingalscave · 07/03/2026 17:41

I've started using Head and Shoulders Citrus Fresh. I can now get away with washing my hair every 3 days, with no dry shampoo in between. I used to wash it every 2 days and most often needed dry shampoo on the middle day. I'm 64 and have had greasy hair since my teens.
