Greasy hair girls

I've always had greasy hair and have to wash it every other day which is a pain. On the day I don't wash I have to douse it in dry shampoo and it's definitely not looking it's best.

I have fine hair but lots of it

Has anyone found a shampoo or scalp mask
that actually keeps grease at bay?

i can get two days out of my hair but no longer. I can’t get away with a slicked back look due to my awful hairline post children but even then I think I would still feel like I had dirty hair?

TheSandgroper · 08/03/2026 08:39

Another one for apple cider vinegar. I have a small spray bottle in my bathroom. I use it randomly.

Split the dry hair, spray the scalp, do it again in another spot and so on. Scrub the scalp with fingertips.

Wash as normal.

My hair is beautifully soft afterwards.

Even when I double wash my hair.....…when you say 'double wash' do you mean shampooing it twice when you wash it? It's recommended that we all do that every time we wash it.

Try a clarifying shampoo.

I’m the same. It only stopped being greasy when I was pregnant. It’s hormones.
one thing to keep in mind is keep changing your pillow case.

TidyWasp · 08/03/2026 10:29

I'd also recommend the Faith in Nature citrus and seaweed shampoo and conditioner, works very well for the price. Leaves you feeling very clean.
For anyone who gets itchy/scaly/scabby scalp I'm now using MooGoo which so far is doing a great job (I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp) with a shampoo brush. I'd also recommend a once a week scrub with Nizoral or T-Gel.

Such a good point on the pillow case!

What's so bad about washing your hair every day? I'm 50, and have done this since my early teens - and it doesn't feel like a chore? I get that some people can't afford to - and some people are struggling for time in the morning, getting everyone else up and to school etc - but I always get the impression from these threads that it's more that people don't want to?

Genuinely curious - my daily shower (and hair wash and condition, and body lotion after) is one of the best and most relaxing parts of my day. Id be gutted if my hair changed, and I couldn't wash it every day - having to fiddle about not getting my hair wet would completely kill my luxurious shower vibe.

PS if the answer is people preferring baths, I have no hope of understanding

Nine times out of ten, greasy hair has a hormonal basis (often thyroid), so there are no miracle shampoos, I’m afraid!

Screamingabdabz · 08/03/2026 23:44

I have greasy hair and have to wash everyday. I’ve attempted to use dry shampoo but the only one that was ever any good was Umberto Giannini ‘Shower in a Bottle’ - it was amazing - literally what it says on the tin. Sadly I don’t think you can get it any more.

Misty9 · 08/03/2026 23:59

I've had this problem - although it's almost waxy and no amount of rinsing gets rid of it. I started using faith in nature lemon and tea tree shampoo and that helped hugely. They've discontinued the variety but I've stockpiled a few bottles. No idea what I'll do when they run out. I also stopped using conditioner. Found a great light leave in conditioning milk for a while - until it was discontinued. Of course.

Bluemin · 09/03/2026 00:05

I have greasy hair and skin and have to wash my hair every day. I've just accepted it now. My skin wouldn't stop being greasy if I stopped washing it so neither will my hair!

Dailyd3 · 09/03/2026 00:11

Try the new style dry shampoos either k18 or got2be ( has to be the get fresh one). They’re not powdery but they spray on wet which is a bit disconcerting the first time you use them but they dry really fast and you totally can’t tell that you’ve used dry shampoo. You can feel it a bit though, but still it’s so much better than the powdery ones.

Honestly I was like you and I started to stretch washes so at first every other day then 3 then 4. Took a couple of months and now I only wash it once a week it’s a game changer! Slick back ponie for those day when your first starting! And keep going with it the oils regulate

This! I used to be washing my hair every 4th or 5th day... now - thanks to covid isolation - I can go to day 9 before it even looks or feels like it needs it.

Feejoah · 09/03/2026 00:20

I have to wash mine every day, shampoo only. The hairdresser always conditions it and it looks amazing....for two or three hours. Then it's heavy and greasy-looking and feels awful. When I had hyperemesis I didn't wash it for up to three days at a time and it stunk with oil and looked disgusting. Absolutely no way I'd tough that out to see if my oil levels regulated. Like others, drier scalp during pregnancy meant I could go two or three days without a wash, but within weeks of giving birth I was back to the daily wash.

I think it depends on how tricky your hair is. I’m thankful mine doesn’t get greasy - washing and drying is a good 45-60 mins, I don’t have time for that daily!
fine, curly hair that takes ages to dry

I wish I had straight hair

MidnightMeltdown · 09/03/2026 01:32

I’m the same OP. Fine hair but loads of it, and have to wash every other day. I don’t think there’s a magic solution unfortunately. It’s simply because we have more hair follicles than people with fewer hair strands.

I'm so curious about this. Don't you use a hair dryer?
For me shampoo & rinse: 2 minutes
Hair dryer: 3 mins max

Its so strange to me that it can take someone 45-60 mins to do the same thing. Can I ask what takes so long?

I wash my hair daily and I like having fresh hair every day.

Sure!
wash (shampoo twice, conditioner)
add products and style
dry with diffuser - this is the main thing that takes anything from 40-50 mins, I stop when I get bored and let any damp bits air dry

https://www.kerastase.co.uk/ranges/regimen/specifique/specifique-bain-divalent-shampoo/KER_00086.html. this is the best one I have had. It's expensive but I use very little and buy the double size bottle. I'd always had greasy hair but it went bonkers during peri. I still have to wash it 48 hours but can stretch it a bit with dry shampoo. If you have fine straight hair your hair works as oil super high ways. Not sure we can stop it.

Supersimkin7 · 09/03/2026 07:57

Philip Kingsley daily shampoo works a treat, conditioner on the ends not the scalp.

No hairdryer unless necessary.

Peacefulllll · 09/03/2026 12:18

I use nothing other than cheap baby shampoo, works really well.
Wash towel dry let it dry naturally no heat nothing.
I sometimes condition the ends with kids conditioner.

MonkeyMonkeyUnderpants1 · 09/03/2026 14:12

I didn't want to love it but Kerastase has sorted out my greasy, very fine hair. I use their Specifique Argile Equilibrante Cleansing Hair Clay for my first shampoo. Just on my scalp and leave it on for a few minutes. Then, I use their Genesis Bain Hydra-Fortifiant Shampoo all over scalp and ends. Any conditioner just on mids and ends. Once a week, I'll use a scrub (really like the Briogeo charcoal one) followed by a scalp mask. Kerastase is pricey but I've been using the shampoo for 4 months now and have more than a quarter of the 1l bottle left. They do refills which are slightly better value.

I’m the same and I’ve found Living Proof dry shampoo to be a godsend. No other dry shampoo comes close.

It’s crap! It leaves more white cast than Batiste and that takes some doing! White powder everywhere

Isometimeswonder · 09/03/2026 15:03

I hate washing my hair every day, as I don't have time to style it so it gets pulled back in a pony, not very flattering.
But I wash it each day... for me, it's not just it looks greasy but I feel grubby. I can smell it. And it leaves marks on pillow cases, inside my hood.
Been the same since age 12!

UnderThePressure · 09/03/2026 15:11

I used to have longish fine hair with greasy roots that I had to wash daily but it made the ends so dry.
The only thing that works for me is Alpecin Double Effect Shampoo, the tiniest bit of Elvive Hydra Pure conditioner and cutting all my hair off to a pixie cut (sorry a bit drastic!) I can go two days now.
