Greasy hair girls

I've always had greasy hair and have to wash it every other day which is a pain. On the day I don't wash I have to douse it in dry shampoo and it's definitely not looking it's best.

I have fine hair but lots of it

Has anyone found a shampoo or scalp mask
that actually keeps grease at bay?

Following with interest, I have fine greasy hair and need wash it everyday.

Mrsredlipstick · 09/03/2026 16:06

I work in beauty and always had greasy fine hair.
I tried everything until a new hairdresser said I had psoriasis of the scalp not dandruff!

I've used Wella senso calm for four years and can go a few days without washing if need be.
It's the best and gentlest I've used. £17 for a litre on websites as it's a professional product.

I use nothing other than cheap baby shampoo, works really well.
Wash towel dry let it dry naturally no heat nothing.
I sometimes condition the ends with kids conditioner.

Like Johnson and Johnson?

Mine is a daily job. Sometimes looks ok on waking up but is greasy and lank by lunchtime so I wash it every morning.
Greasy hair I can deal with, I've had it all my life but in recent years I seem to have this coating of grease on my scalp by the end of the day that you can nearly scrape off with a fingernail. It goes when I change shampoos but is back again after a day or too. My home town has soft water and when I visit my parents my hair feels so light and soft it's bliss.

I live in a very hard water area and even with a water softener the greasy coating comes back. On the advice of a hairdresser tried using shampoo to deal with mineral build up [chlorine remover] but it made it as dry as a bone.

So for the grease what is working at the moment is this stuff. Bonkers expensive but does leave my hair feeling lovely and a little goes a long way. I'm too afraid to use it daily though in case it turns my hair to straw. [I've used apple cider aveno, dandruff shampoos, all sorts. ]

I'm using this 2/3 days but can feel the product build up in between. It was so expensive I'll keep using it until it's gone but I won't replace it. Maybe I'll go and buy some baby shampoo to see what that does. At least I won't feel guilty about that joining the graveyard of half used shampoo bottles in my bathroom.

It’s crap! It leaves more white cast than Batiste and that takes some doing! White powder everywhere

I’ve never had that issue! I do have blonde hair though so maybe that’s why. Saved my life when I was having chemo and dragging out the washes to try and preserve what hair I had left.

I just wash my hair every day with a gentle every day shampoo & conditioner. I have fine hair but lots of it.

The only time I have managed every other day is when I was on roaccutane for my skin & it dried my hair out too - it was great!

I just have an oily scalp & nothing you can put on it stops the oil production!

Only great thing about having oily skin/scalp is that I have hardly any wrinkles or fine lines on my face at all!!

I think it depends on how tricky your hair is. I’m thankful mine doesn’t get greasy - washing and drying is a good 45-60 mins, I don’t have time for that daily!
fine, curly hair that takes ages to dry

I wish I had straight hair

Thanks for explaining! My hair is short, fine and straight - and requires washing every day. Doesn't take me long at all - curls and length do seem to add problems... On the plus side, they look great.

I should add that’s with a Dyson too! My hairdresser uses 2 at once on me

No, this doesn't work for everyone. I tried this for months and my hair never got less oily. In fact, it got worse and a trichologist told me that doing this can cause hair loss if you leave oil and dirt sitting on your scalp because it causes DHT build up and can cause fungal infections.

Hairloss can occur in the extreme cases where the person hasn't washed their hair for years.

Oil has to be evenly distributed throughout the hair and not just left to sit on the scalp. Oil is hydrophobic, meaning that scalp oils, when brushed through the hair, can then make your hair waterproof (in theory, I've never greased out and then stood in the pouring rain to see if my hair gets waterlogged or not). And you have all sorts of bacteria and fungi living on your skin (and in your gut), the idea is to keep them from overgrowing and getting out of control.

Constantly stripping the scalp of oils is going to make your scalp dry and your hair brittle. A gentle shampoo will remove excess oils gently, but of course everyone's chemistry is different and therefore there is no one size fits all.

I wash my hair once every 2 days, although in the summer I do get close to washing it every day, but I've never given in. It's not to conserve water, I just don't want to cause more grease.

I once washed my hair three times in one day as an experiment. My scalp felt very dry and fragile, that continued into the next day. By day three, my scalp had thoroughly greased itself silly.

Just wash your hair as often as you feel you need and don't go crazy.

Mine is like this. I actually don’t think it looks that bad but I just feel gross. I don’t feel properly clean. It’s like the oil from my head seeps to the rest of me 😂 I hate washing and styling everyday but if I don’t I just feel yuck.

Re. Baby shampoo, yes to Johnson and Johnson

The yellow one is good, the lavender one is great too

YourOnMute · 10/03/2026 02:02

I like the Aveeno cider vinegar shampoo. I don't use shampoos with SLS, but even so often I will use one as a clarifying shampoo.
I wash every second day, I wash twice and I really scrub my scalp. I can't leave it longer than that as my scalp feels better with regular washing. I read that drying your hair helps with the grease, so maybe just blasting your roots might help? Also have fine hair!

ElsaSnow · 10/03/2026 07:38

I know washing long thick and curly hair can take longer or people with various reasons can’t wash their hair every day.

But doesn’t your hair then smell of cooking etc? Even with windows open and extractor fan on if I’ve cooked something like bacon or a curry, my hair would smell so even if it wasn’t really greasy I’d wash it as it doesn’t feel/smell clean?

I wash my hair most days - it’s shoulder length and quite fine, mostly straight but goes wavy if left to air dry. I can go an extra day but by 5pm it’s definitely feeling greasy underneath and by the third morning there is no way I’d be leaving the house without washing it and it takes longer to wash it as the grease has built up so I’d rather wash it most days.

Sorry as someone who is 55 and has always had greasy hair I have found the only way to manage it is to wash it every day.

Exactly the same here x
