Greasy hair girls

I've always had greasy hair and have to wash it every other day which is a pain. On the day I don't wash I have to douse it in dry shampoo and it's definitely not looking it's best.

I have fine hair but lots of it

Has anyone found a shampoo or scalp mask
that actually keeps grease at bay?

I have to wash mine every other day, sometimes if I am not going out I leave it three days. I use Christophe Robin scalp scrub once a week, it's really deep cleansing and smells divine. I had a mini pot in a beauty advent calendar years ago and I have been hooked ever since.

Londonlife999 · 07/03/2026 17:49

I washed my hair everyday for years, I started using sulphate free shampoo and now get 3-4 days out of it!

Every so often I wash my hair with vosene as I feel it gives it a really deep clean, on the days I notice a bit of oil I use batiste dry shampoo (I've tried a lot and I find this the best for me) or more recently Voduz Prep Talk which is also pretty good!!

good luck; once you are no longer a slave to the daily hair washes it's amazing!!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/03/2026 18:00

I am in the same situation as you OP but the other way around, my hair isn't fine, but I've not got a lot of it, especially around the front hairline and on top, its thicker underneath.

i can not get 3maybe 4 days out of my hair without having to use dry shampoo.
i use ouai clarifying shampoo once a month
inbetween I use L’Oréal hydra hyaluronic shampoo and conditioner

i always wash twice and really scrub my scalp. I use minimal styling products to stop my hair looking flat and lank

I’ve been using the L’Oréal hydra fora few months and sadly it’s made my hair worse.

Chill1Heeler · 07/03/2026 19:18

What shampoo are you using? Its been over 10 years since I stopped the daily wash, I can get 5 days without it looking greasy now. Salon products are a game changer, I buy Osmo salon products on amazon.

applegingermint · 07/03/2026 19:23

The Inkey List exfoliating scalp mask has been really good for my oily roots. I seem to get build up quite quickly.

OhGingleBells · 07/03/2026 19:26

I do what we’re told not to do - and wash it with shampoo and conditioner every day. Root to tip. I heard somewhere that conditioner at the top feels counter productive, but works for some people because you then produce less natural oil? I don’t really know - but my hair is in good condition. I always blow dry the roots but sometimes leave the rest to air dry. If I curl it well with a wand then I can get a good two days out of it. Best thing for me is washing and blow drying it at night and sleeping with it in heatless curling sausage or in rollers. Curly and curled hair definitely takes longer to get greasy.

Everyone’s hair is different. You’ll get people acting horrified if you say you wash it every day, but it might be right for you!

Apple cider vinegar rinses are good too, but don’t forget to dilute it properly!

Calypsocuckoo · 07/03/2026 19:50

The colour wow shampoo is the best one I have tried, I have fine thin hair that gets greasy easily. My hair is not naturally straight or curly and needs to be styled to not look messy so I wash it every other day, and this shampoo is the only one that works to mean it doesn’t look greasy on the second day.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 07/03/2026 20:29

You are doing dry shampoo wrong Op. You use it on the day you wash, it works overnight and then you get a 2nd day out of it. Dry Shampoo goes in clean hair not dirty. Spray, massage, done. Got2be is the best IMO

OSupergran · 07/03/2026 21:34

I'm similar - by end of day 2 it's hideous. I feel like I spend far too much of my free time washing and drying my hair and wish I could leave it longer- i just have oily skin so even if it's completely cleansed that doesn't stop oil building up at the normal rate.

Have tried various things but doesn't make much difference.

Unfortunately its all hormonal for me. I could easily go 3-4 days when pregnant and my skin cleared up 100% but now I'm back to normal and I just feel better when my hair is freshly washed.

I liked some kerastase products like their scalp mask for irritated scalps but they were so expensive especially used every other day on long hair.

Same. I'm naturally greasy skinned and for about 6 months following pregnancy my skin went so dry it was literally cracking and bleeding. My hair looked fab though with no washing for a week or more amazing!

I've tried stretching washes, no go.

I tried no poo and as a result gave myself permanent scalp issues (dermatitis) and now have to use medicated shampoo every wash.

I too have to dry shampoo on the day between washes. I have resisted washing every day as my hair is really thick and takes hours to air dry and blow drying damages it as it's very fine on top of having lots of it. If I didn't look like a fat 12 year old boy with short hair I would just cut it all off tbh.

Planning to try that shampoo bar though!!!

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 07/03/2026 22:00

Johnnys Chop Shop texture spray. It acts as a dry shampoo and now I can usually get 4 days out of my hair 😃

SavannahBananas · 07/03/2026 22:23

I found the best method for my oily greasy hair is (double) washing hair in the morning, I am currently using Herbal Essence Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner and using dry shampoo before bedtime. The next day it always seems fresher than it would be using the dry shampoo in the morning.

I have also tried a load of various dry shampoo but Batiste is the clear winner for me.

CarCarTruckJeep · 08/03/2026 05:44

Stretching out washes worked for me and I know some other people who have said the same. It's worth a try but it would take a good few weeks maybe even months to see if it works or not. I went from an every other day washer to a twice weekly washer which is so much more manageable. I often use dry shampoo on the day furtherst from a wash, if I've got plans. When I was pregnant I didn't need to, I agree my hair was best then!

I used to use Liz Earle shampoo but I haven't dared buy it since some of the ingredients changed and it started getting bad reviews.
I now use https://www.littlesoapcompany.co.uk/products/eco-warrior-shampoo-bar-100g and I wash and rinse twice. It's the only shampoo I've found since Liz Earle that doesn't leave my fine but greasy hair weighed down and claggy. I can go three or four days between washes (fringe every other day).

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be trying this shampoo bar.

Like other users have said, Ive only had great hair while pregnant, when it was long, thick and glossy! It must be hormonal as I have oily skin too.

I'm going to double wash and dry shampoo at night, thanks so much for all the tips and product suggestions I'll try them all and see what works.

I'm going to try this @CarCarTruckJeepon days I'm not doing much and can hide my greasy hair under a cap. I used to wash my hair every day but I noticed it getting greasy that evening which wasn't ideal!

I constantly chop and change the products I use, currently its Ouai shampoo for fine hair and a L'Oréal elvive coconut oil hair mask on the ends.

Odds are that some posters suffer with the likes of PCOS without knowing it. DD had horrendously greasy hair amongst a myriad of other symptoms. The greasy hair was the first thing to disappear when she started taking Dianette. In the meantime one of the things which helped was smothering her dry scalp in aloe Vera, leaving for an hour and then washing hair as normal.

Bringemout · 08/03/2026 06:38

Glycolic acid shampoo l’oreal one, and I never condition unless it’s a mask, once a week. I also double wash, herbal essence strawberry and then the glycolic acid shampoo.

Sorry as someone who is 55 and has always had greasy hair I have found the only way to manage it is to wash it every day.

Same here! I've tried leaving it for a couple of weeks twice and it made no difference.
My hair smells after a day of not being washed and so does my skin.

I was chatting to a hairdresser about it and he said that it's just because I have "fine" aka thin hair, so there's less of it to soak up the grease.
I assume many of these people in the beauty industry spreading the myth that you never need to wash hair daily - have thick lustrous locks....

LeapyearLoser · 08/03/2026 07:16

Yep, greasy hair greasy skin female. Nearing 60 and have to wash hair every day. Its very fine and grey and takes seconds to dry.
I've only ever had decent hair when it grew back after cancer, full of chemo frizz but no grease!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 08/03/2026 07:38

@34feeling54 totally agree. Leaving it doesn’t help at all. I’m 42 and still have to wash my hair every day or it looks like an oil slick.

SomethingAboutNothing · 08/03/2026 07:38

I have found the Colour Wow carb infused dream cocktail gives my hair a big more life on day 2, but still have to wash every other day. It is a thickening product so I guess it gives the hair a bit of volume.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 08/03/2026 08:19

Yep some people are just greasy.

If you have greasy forehead / T zone, it makes sense you'll have greasy hair

If you don't have a greasy face. Maybe cutting down on washing would work. I've tried it so many times, to no avail. I can now do every other day, using a salicylic acid shampoo occasionally helps.
