Is there a ballerina trainer or sneakerina that doesn't give Hotter shoes vibes?

I like comfortable shoes and have loved the trainer trend in recent years but I think that's blowing over. I hear ballerina trainers or sneakerinas (hideous word) are the next big thing. They all seem to scream hotter shoes catalogue to me though! Has anyone seen any that won't make this mid 50s woman look like she's raided her mum's wardrobe?

Or suggest other non granny shoes that stay on your feet for commuting across London please?

I saw the puma, and some Adidas, sneakerinas in person yesterday and did not like the look at all. Today, on the back of this thread, have ordered the leopard speed cats. What have I done?! @PhaedraWas I don't like leopard either😂

I don’t think comfortable trainers are going anywhere in a city like London. A cleaner silhouette will probably see you through without looking granny-ish.

I’d be a bit careful with the Mary Jane versions, even on trend brands like Adidas they can tip into frumpy quite quickly. That said, I like the silver ones posted upthread, the silver makes them feel more modern and less “sensible shoe”.

I think the lace-up styles will be much easier to wear without looking like you’ve raided your mum’s wardrobe. I’ve seen them everywhere from sports brands like Adidas, Puma and Nike, through to designers like Miu Miu, Prada and Louis Vuitton and then high street; COS, &Other Stories. Zara has a couple of pairs for about £30 if you just want to test the water, although I wouldn’t expect amazing quality at that price.

There's actually something rather lovely about those in the pale pink - like a cross between a gym pump & a ballet slipper.

I also have the Puma speedcat ballet flats in leopard print. They are very comfy and I have had a lot of compliments on them. I'm 48. I wear these little beauties with them - wearing them with visible socks is a step too far.

Having said that, I'll wear loafers with coloured socks. Just not ballet flats.

God those are freaky looking!!!

I bought similar ones a few years ago, thinking it was somehow a necessity with trainers - & I just can't get them to stay on my feet! So I just gave up & wear all my trainers with bare feet - & have never had a problem?

Not seen anyone recommend it @petitpasta but have you looked at the whole “ballerina” category at Schuh? It’s pretty large with lots of active ballerina options (over my dead body at I going to call anything a fucking sneakerina - sounds like what you’d call a kids’ sneaker in Spanish).
Here’s my favorite - the Puma Speedcat Ballerina. I find them really good looking and love this colour way.
https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/puma-speedcat-ballet-pale-blue-trainers/1968715350/

And then here’s the whole category. Even Crocs have ballerinas in there!
https://www.schuh.co.uk/trends/ballet-flats/?redir=1&rterm=ballerina

Those split-toe ones - ugh! They make me feel physically ill ...

On the other hand, I really like the Adidas Barreda in red. Simple & nothing extraneous - unlike the Converse ones. The laces are purely decorative on them, which really annoys me. It's dishonest, like fake zips on footwear.

I know neither of the last two images are snnas (I too refuse to say the word!! So ugly!), but I do like the black ones with straps & ankle ties (not so keen on the Japanese schoolgirl styling). And I LOVE the cream ones with the little daisies - but they're for children ... what a bloody waste!!!

I mean, a holy terror is my opinion of what they are BUT they are based on the extremely popular (don’t ask me why?) Maison Margiela tabi shoes, which are based on original 15th-century Japanese shoes apparently. MM make that split-toe in about 60+ shoes:

DOUBLE EDIT: I crossposted with @somuchbedding

I remember reading that at a retrospective of his work in Paris - which was beautiful & fascinating.

But the toe thing just repulses me. I can't wear thong-style sandals either - the sensation is very weird & makes me feel sick!

EleanorMc67 · 07/03/2026 02:23

These are all lovely. Probably too pretty to be deemed on-trend by others, but I like them! They look as if they're beautifully cut.

EleanorMc67 · 07/03/2026 02:31

They are cute. These are even cuter though - probably because they're not what this thread is about! But all synthetic, & I'm not sure how my feet would cope encased in shiny polyurethane in summer ...

Yes they are!

Good to know! Is there any reason why you couldn't replace the laces with another colour? Im not keen on the white laces on the black version.

PhaedraWas · 07/03/2026 02:45

Certaintyneeded · 02/03/2026 00:02

I know taste is very personal, but honestly, do people really like the look of these things? Or is it just because theyre fashionable?

Most of them are lovely - there are a couple that are too much on the trainer side and I don't like the Converse ones with fake laces.

Usually I can read "what trainers are in now" threads just to see what is (inexplicably) considered 'in" safely knowing I'll never want to buy them (can't stand trainers) but these are lovely.

Muffinme · 07/03/2026 07:57

Have you looked at HOFF? They do a satin ballet shoe style trainer. They’re not the Mary Jane style shoe with the strap hybrid which I think often do look very “Hotter” but the real satin ballet shoe trainer style. I have a pair and 2-other pairs of their otter style trainers and they’re very very comfortable and the best fitting trainers I’ve ever had. They have a good colour range too. Sorry if they’ve already been mentioned I’ve only skimmed the thread

No, the laces are completely removable so you could easily replace with another colour

They have arrived and OMG. I may never wear any other shoes again.

I have fully followed your journey right up to being about to click checkout on the red Adidas bareda Mary Janes. That I definitely do not need 😂

Some of the colour ways of these are just beautiful. I love the terracotta, mint, and lilac though I’m not sure how to feel about the elasticized sides. Has anyone had shoes with them and can comment? It seems like they’re a little TOO close to actual ballet shoes.

RampantIvy · 07/03/2026 13:37

This thread has made me realise just how conservative I am in my choice of footwear styles and colours.

I dislike brightly coloured footwear, partly because it would look grubby very quickly where I live, partly because I don't want to draw attention to my feet but mainly because I don't go out very often and when I do the shoes on this thread would look so very out of place. I doubt that they are part of our office dress code.

When they’re on your foot the sides don’t look elasticated at all, I love mine

I was more wondering if they’re comfortable around the side of your foot. I guess I thought they would sort of dig in somehow? Maybe they’re more comfortable than regular shoes,
though? I haven’t tried on any flats or trainers like that.

I know ... I was fully expecting to hate most of these, & now I have three pairs calling to me ...😶

Try Next?

I can't see the cream adidas ones in Next. Maybe I just need to keep checking the Adidas site to see if they come back into stock

PinkLegoBalloon · 08/03/2026 10:45

I love the sound of the private library with the walled garden!

Our town has a lot of free libraries, I think about 8! One is in the middle of a huge park, and one has it's own walled garden. I feel very lucky we have so many free parks, libraries and museums where I live. ❤️

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/03/2026 10:56

What?

@bridgetreilly they’re listed a gold on the next site but pretty much sold out sadly

kirds · 08/03/2026 13:10

I’ve bought some Adidas Bareda Mary Jane’s off the back of this thread and I’m so happy with them. Exactly what I’ve been looking for and total comfort. I’m buying more in other colours!
