Is there a ballerina trainer or sneakerina that doesn't give Hotter shoes vibes?

I like comfortable shoes and have loved the trainer trend in recent years but I think that's blowing over. I hear ballerina trainers or sneakerinas (hideous word) are the next big thing. They all seem to scream hotter shoes catalogue to me though! Has anyone seen any that won't make this mid 50s woman look like she's raided her mum's wardrobe?

Or suggest other non granny shoes that stay on your feet for commuting across London please?

They remind me of the sketchers I had years ago when it was all I could wear and they weren't considered fashionable lol. In fact, I still have a pair that I can use again!!!

Same here.

TBH, I like my Skechers more than any of the shoes shown on this thread.

I like a few of the options but that’s because I have always liked a mary jane or ghillie style shoe. My version reminds me of a pair I had when I was younger so some of it is nostalgia. I wouldn’t buy something just because it’s in fashion, the Puma version is not for me because I don’t like the side profile.

Ah I think you’ve helped me realise why I don’t like them as I don’t like Mary Jane’s either!

I just remembered I had some great little silver ballerina trainera from Rocketdog years ago. I loved those shoes.

I think im too boring for this thread... just got a pair of converse ballet pumps/plimsolls. They were £25 though ...not chunky. Probably what i'd wear with a midi dress and jacket in the summer and get crucified on here for lack of style

Primary school plimsolls vibe

Reading this thread: a journey.

Act one: wtf are ballerina trainers.

Act two: these are the ugliest shoes known to mankind which we will look back on in less than three months, wondering how we were ever conned into wearing them.

Act three: ordering the Adidas Barreda Mary Janes in red.

I like wearing trainers as I like wearing socks. Whatever do people wear with sneakerinas?!

My daughter says just wear socks. Mind you, all the Gen Z alphas seem to wear socks with sliders.
I used to wear those trainer liners some years ago with Skecher sneariksa/ballertrainers or whatever they were. Yes, I expect to get judged.
But like OP, I want something comfortable yet work appropriate. My teenage self would be sad.

Agreed. I'm sticking to my Nike trainers!

Nofeckingway · 02/03/2026 15:05

Sneakerina is my favourite new word.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/03/2026 16:03

I might just stick with trainers. They are so lacking in faff.

Of the shoes people have mentioned or linked I like the samba janes but like others, I need to wear socks and not sure how that would work. I like proper, actual socks rather than no show things that always fall
down/ scrunch up.

I think I’m too old to worry if my trainers are fashionable!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/03/2026 16:04

Also I like my shoes to have some arch support - I have narrow feet and find that shoes that are open like this favour the broad of foot.

Ilovegoldies · 02/03/2026 17:48

Like a PP mentioned Onitsuka Tigers are my go to.

Joyola · 02/03/2026 19:03

Have a look at M&S ladies shoes online, lots of ballet flats, some styled as Mary Jane’s, some are just ballet flats, 39 pages inall

I bought two pairs, then my right hip was operated on and my feet swelled horribly. I'd forgotten about them in the spare room. 🙈

Bearybasket · 02/03/2026 21:12

They all scream micro trend that’s going to look dated as hell and be destined for the landfill in 10 minutes.

somuchbedding · 03/03/2026 05:49

@Bearybasket but they have been a thing since last summer…and they have been in fashion before. Plus if it’s now a discussion on MNs it’s not a niche micro trend.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/03/2026 06:41

Adidas barraceda

I bought washable insoles, great, instead of socks

No they don't I'd say these were true to size and slightly wider than the others and very very soft x

coachinghelp · 03/03/2026 08:07

Just to return to OP, please be assured that the concept of trainers being unfashionable is, at this point in the century about as absurd as trousers being unfashionable. There will be different shapes, sure, but they’re here. While Dover Street Market still sells them, while Adidas x Wales Bonner still exists, I feel likewe’re all excused from having to go back to proper shoes unless we want to. I don’f know what a ballerina trainer is though, is this like a Simone Rocha thing?
