Welcome to style mavens old and new to continue our chats.
Hopefully more bling if there's another banquet on the horizon?

Sorry I’m lazy @Maireas! Where can I find a picture of the dress in blue? , I’m really not keen on certain shades of green, definitely want to see if seeing it in another colour would make me more favourable to the green gown.

On "What Kate Wore", it's quite a long article, I'll try to find the picture.

Shorter hairstyles in years gone by were also a lot about the prevalence of lice and the difficulty in dealing with them.

I’m sure I remember reading about it being more common for wealthier women to have longer hair because they were less likely to share beds with their children therefore less likely to catch lice from them. Which is logical

That’s really interesting! , I love hearing all these stories.

My grandmothers (who would have been about 110 by now) both had QEII type hair when I was growing up but it suited both of them, they both had a soft wave to their hair. I have a photo of them both from my parents wedding and they looked very elegant with their 60s suits and beautifully waved hair. My DM (80s) has had short hair since she was about 30 but never had a perm, set, used rollers or any of those things.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 19/03/2026 12:42

Whenever I hear people talking about perms I think of that Mumsnet thread where a poster said she had one and when she got home, her brother in law took one look and said "Bloody hell, it's Colonel Gaddaffi!"

🤣 that reminds me of the time my mum came home from the hairdresser and my dad accidentally blurted out “ you look like art Garfunkel!” 🤣

I prefer the dress in pale blue, though the green does look like the correct colour for the Nigerian flag.

I think historically in British culture girls were expected to put long hair 'up' when they reached adulthood. Didn't short hair start to become more popular with the 'flappers' in the 20s? And then, as people have said, there was the convenience aspect around the time of the wars.

I've assumed that Catherine is more comfortable with her hair down since her illness and treatment. She does still wear it up for some formal engagements e.g. military, such as St. Patrick's Day.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 19/03/2026 13:01

The pale blue is pretty but better on someone like Sophie, I think. Deep green really suits Kate.

bluegreygreen · 19/03/2026 13:09

Yes, she does suit those deep jewel colours.

That would look great on Sophie.

Speaking of Sophie, was she at the banquet last night? I've not seen any pictures of her.

eggandonion · 19/03/2026 13:49

I hope Sophie is OK, she wasn't mentioned yesterday. I was at school in the 1970s and 1980s and many girls had short hair (Purdy and Lady Diana!) Boys were supposed to short hair but rebelled by seeing what length they could get away with.
I think Kate could do with a tidy up - so could my daughter but don't say that to her! But the length is great for styling in various ways.

What is this weird obsession with Catherine’s hair being chopped off?
I’ve seen this multiple times on these threads!
yet I have never seen another woman with long hair being criticised this way .
its very odd.

I thought hair-dos were fair game on the Royal Style section. Our opinions differ, that's all.

Lunde · 19/03/2026 14:07

Are there any other bandeau style tiaras that we haven't seen for a while?

I think they would really suit Kate with her current desire to wear her hair down and her preference for smaller tiaras - but as PP stated Eugenie's emerald bandeau has negative York associations and I can't imagine her wanting to wear Meghan's wedding tiara either.

It’s Royal Style and Beauty so we can talk about hair, make up etc not just clothes. And I disagree that it’s only Kate we talk about re chopping hair shorter. We’ve discussed Anne’s hair too. As ever, it’s a comment on the look not the person.

My opinion is that the same bitchy remarks every single thread about certain people's hair is quite tedious.

SqueakyDinosaur · 19/03/2026 14:57

Wearing Meghan's wedding tiara would be absolutely top level trolling!

eggandonion · 19/03/2026 15:12

Anne has amazing hair! And Princess Margaret always had fabulous hair.
Lilibet has lovely red curls. Real Spencer hair?

No, she wasn’t there.

a couple of places have commented on it, but none are saying she missed it last minute or pulled out so I’m assuming she was never going.

She was in New York at the UN last week so I wouldn’t be surprised if photos pop up in a few days of her somewhere in South America or the likes. Maybe somewhere it’s safer to show details of after she’s left?

Yes I’ve noticed this a lot on these threads, I don’t post much but sometimes have a read and without fail there are posters saying Catherine should chop six inches off her hair, if she had hideous rats tails then the criticism could be seen as valid and constructive, but as Catherine is a walking hair advert with hair most could only dream of having it’s most bizarre that it is a constant on these threads that she should cut it off, I don’t see this criticism levelled at other royal women so consistently, and I agree it’s tedious.

ExcellentDaydream · 19/03/2026 15:31

She often goes to places where there are security risks so maybe that's it.

Sophie that is.

I’m probably someone that’s said I think Kate’s hair is too long. In my opinion, it is. It’s unquestionably beautiful hair, but I can’t help but think it’s too long.

ExcellentDaydream · 19/03/2026 15:37

I don't think anyone's bitching about Kate's hair and saying she should chop it off, but some (including me) think she suited it better a bit shorter and on some occasions we think it might have looked better up, we also comment about other Royals women's hair looking better up or down with particular outfits. I think this thread is very good at being constructive without being bitchy.
