Can we talk about how awful tights are?

Just that really - I've recently started working back in an office - so out with the joggers an hoodie and now I "dress" for work LOL.

The tights I've worn are just dreadful.... Often the tights seem to grip onto the fabric of the skirt/dress i'm wearing so it all ends up kind of clinging to my legs...... the crotch area ends up half way down to my knees - the seams end up all over the place and generally they are just not comfy at all!

I've tried buying form M&S and Tesco and a few other places but am yet to find a suitable brand where the tights fit properly aaargh.

I have considered hold ups but just checked out the reviews on M&S online and there are many comments of them falling down..

So MN collective - please tell me if there is a brand of tights out there that are actually comfy - or if you've been able to find a great alternative - I'm all ears.

M&S Autograph or Falke or Wolford if you’ve got the cash. Crap tights are a false economy.

I’m finding this too and I’m actually frustrated that so many women are still finding Snag to be so amazing and fantastic! Their quality has taken a massive nose dive in the last couple of years as they’ve really, ahem, overstretched themselves as a company. The past 5x pairs I got, different styles, were absolute garbage. Credit to them their customer service is pretty good but the replacements were no better. They get holes in very easily, the denier isn’t the same quality. They roll down. They come out of the packet looking shrunken. The toes wear through. All after a few wears. In one case on the first wear, they laddered, within two hours of having the bloody things on. When I first bought them five or so years ago and they were a smaller company with less stock they were far better.

If you’re still having success with them I think you’re lucky, because they’ve gone to shit.

Edited

I have heard the same story about the decline in quality from a lot of people. I last bought their main range opaques about four years ago, when they were excellent. Since then, I've exclusively bought their light compression tights which are absolutely excellent, but with the caveats that they are only available in 100 denier and fairly limited colours, and that they are more expensive than the ordinary opaque tights.

surprisebaby12 · 27/02/2026 19:01

You need dancers tights. They fit perfectly, don’t slip down and are more durable

PreciousEnough · 27/02/2026 19:04

Love M and S, sorry! Autograph merino wool ones or their velvet touch opaques. Last for ages! I love tights and hate trousers.

HappilyFreeNow · 27/02/2026 19:09

Superdrug hold ups.

SisterTeatime · 27/02/2026 19:10

Always M&S. Wear a slip (also from M&S and I’ve had it for over 30 years!!!) when wearing an unlined skirt. Don’t know if this makes a difference but I wear M&S shapewear knickers (cotton ones) so the waistbands of knickers and tights are in the same place round my waist.

I find Snag’s whole brand repulsive. I’d love to buy Wolford or Falke but my legs don’t justify the investment.

Yeah, they are fab. I went to an auction of x factor clothes once, and picked up two pairs of new dancer’s tights, oh my god they were fabulous. I never knew where they were from as they were just in a white packet, but they lasted me so, so many wears. They were a bit of a zany pattern so not great for every day wear but I loved them. I think of them basically every time I have to suffer today’s awful tights offerings.

Yeah, I have to say they aren't as good as they were. Last time I ordered two pairs of bog-standard black tights on the slower delivery, and they took nearly a week to even post them. The quality has dropped as well, I'm really disappointed because they were SO good.

TheProvincialLady · 27/02/2026 19:28

Dancers’ tights are amazing I agree.

I never understand the love for Snag tights. I believed the hype but found them baggy round the ankles, oddly thick and unflattering. Then they started their weird porny advertising and I never considered trying them again.

My very unremarkable M&S and John Lewis always fit well and stay up….unless I put on weight, in which case the same tights roll down under my belly, pinch my thighs and are generally tormenting. So you may find that you’re wearing the wrong size.

SouthernNights59 · 27/02/2026 19:59

I'm not in the UK so no recommendations, but agree with posters who say you must have the correct size - go up if necessary - and a lined skirt or slip is a must with tights. I wore them for decades when I worked and found them very comfortable. I hated "smart" trousers with a passion so always wore skirts.

YouHaveAnArse · 27/02/2026 20:17

Where are you getting dancers' tights from? Not that I'm convinced there are many dancers with my build....

Monsterslam · 27/02/2026 20:21

I wear Primark body control shaper ones which are great. A bit of stomach control which flattens the baggy belly bit I have after 3dc. They stay up well. I don't ever wear anything under 100 Denier though and always black.

Are you me? Apart from doing (soggy) gardening, l’ve only worn trousers few times this year. I tend to live in dresses, l love my dresses. And you never have to worry about co-ordinating tops and bottoms as you do with trousers or a skirt.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 27/02/2026 20:37

I hate Snag tighter, I think they’re rubbish.
Only tights I’ve got random holes in, plus they wear thin between the thighs really quickly.
I really like John Lewis 60 denier opaque, which I buy in Waitrose.
My top top to avoid the static and then clinging, is a squirt of hand lotion which you then run over the top of your tights when you’re wearing them and it will stop it straight away!

WhatEvenIsMyPassword · 27/02/2026 20:38

after years of buying supercheap supermarket tights, I invested in M&S and am very happy with them in comparison. In supermarket days, a second pair of robust knickers put on outside the tights solve the falling down problem.

petitpasta · 27/02/2026 20:46

I won't buy snag tights but Better tights are just as good

arcticrollypolly · 27/02/2026 20:48

Just get a slip from M&S. They sell them in various lengths and in black, white and nude. I never worry about the brand of tights I wear because I just wear a slip under my skirts and dresses!

Pebbles16 · 27/02/2026 20:59

This is the reason I only wear trousers - although can do skirts in the summer when no tights are required!

But can I ask why people don't wear Snags? Is it due to ethics, country of origin, poor customer service? I am not a tights wearer (as mentioned), just curious

EDIT for typos

JulieMcCoy · 27/02/2026 21:09

Snag are the only tights that don’t make my legs itch.

similarminimer · 27/02/2026 21:20

Heist tights are perfect and last for years

I don't wear anything under my Autograph 40 Denier Soft Luxe Seamless Opaque either. It was a trick my sister taught me years ago. They stop put that way, no slippage between layers and they have their own cotton gusset.

Melarus · 28/02/2026 10:21

Snag are only so-so, I'd say. I've got the 40 denier and they're smooth, but shiny and plasticky. They don't look very good.

M&S used to do brilliant tights that were nearly all cotton, but semi-sheer. They were so comfortable . Discontinued now. I've been looking for a replacement for a long time.

I won’t buy snag tights but I can highly recommend heist.

Agree. I wear Heist, Hedoine, Wolford and Falke. I do have some autograph tights that have been good, and some from Next with a soft, wide waistband that were also comfortable and long lasting. Sizing is crucial with tights, I’ve worn Wolford tights since my late teens and I always buy one size up from the suggested size.
I bought some snag tights years ago before their ads got too annoying, but I found them very underwhelming, I didn’t like the texture of them and the waistband dug in and wasn’t comfortable or flattering. (I am a tallish size 10-12, 12 now, ten at the time, with a post c section shelf that some tights can accentuate if they have overly tight waist elastic).
I bought Wolford tights even as a skint student because they worked out cheaper in the long run, they lasted so long. I got them in sales and hand washed them, and bought thicker deniers as all very fine tights ladder more easily.

MabelAnderson · 28/02/2026 10:48

Arraminta · 27/02/2026 15:46

I only wear Wolford. They're perfect and worth the price. I won't buy from Snag because their fetishistic advertising is vile.

Yes, at first they just had a range of models of different sizes, that seemed a good thing, but then they got increasingly fetishistic and creepy, horrible over sexualised pictures, and the whole men are women if they say they are thing.
I just wanted to buy tights. A photo of a woman in the tights is helpful , that’s it.
Plus the tights themselves were a horrible dead colour in the nude, and strangely baggy at the ankles.

Charnos do fine cotton tights that are v similar, they are around 50% cotton, I got some from UKtights.
