Arghhhh! Wedding shoes when husband and me are same height!

I’m totally stuck and running out of time.
My son gets married in a few short weeks. I have the dress (photo attached) but I can’t decide on suitable shoes. The big problem is that me and my husband are pretty much the same height and I don’t want me to tower over him in the wedding photos 😁
Because I haven’t worn higher heels as a result, I probably would totter around in them anyway!
I don’t want to wear loafers either.
Please can you suggest something suitable and elegant to go with this lovely dress?

@Sunbeds I agree with the red, or a gold. Also flat, pointy slingbacks are modern and comfortable.

So are we thinking it's ok for mother of the groom to wear black??

"We"?

What might happen if she does? Farm animals miscarrying? Biblical floods? Plagues of locusts perhaps??!!

Luckily it's navy not black (& covered in sequinned pink, yellow & red flowers with green embroidery), so thankfully those unnatural disasters as punishment from God (a woman both taller than her husband AND wearing black at a wedding!!!) might just be averted ...

Agree with the raspberry Air & Grace flats though ...!!!

No I'm not joking and there's no irony.
The poster I responded to is FOUR INCHES TALLER than her HUSBAND!
This is not the OP I'm responding to. The OP has more important issues to address, such as finding the right shoes.
This is about another poster.
I can't get my head around a 4 inch height difference. Surely it makes the poster feel unfeminine, and the DH feel unmasculine, and surely they look odd together as a couple?

WHY IS THAT SUCH A PROBLEM???

You can't get your head round that?

I suggest you need a head adjustment...

LeapyearLoser · 25/02/2026 05:02

Any headgear? I would add a pop of colour, especially for a wedding. Bright pink?

Haaaaang on. The OP has said she is ''pretty much the same height'' as her DH, which is fine. She has not stated she is taller. She has stated she ''doesn't want to tower over him'' (if she were to wear heels), which is completely understandable.
I initially thought the dress was black, as did plenty of other posters, but I later posted to say ''my mistake, I've realised it's navy'', and I complimented the dress by calling it beautiful, which it is. Please keep up with all my posts, don't cherry pick.
And no, of course there wouldn't be those terrible disasters you have exampled if OP were to wear black. But tradionally, a mother of the groom who wears black risks being seen by guests as sending a statement that she either disapproves of the bride, or that she is in mourning that her son is getting married. Therefore, mothers of grooms should be cautious about wearing black in case guests interpret their colour choice as this.
Anyhow, as you've said, the dress is navy, not black, which is perfect. And as I've said, it is a beautiful dress.
I'm thrilled you agree on the raspberry flats! I really hope the OP goes with them, rather than navy shoes.

The best advice I ever read about flat shoes (and it was on MN) is that they should look intentional. Not “this is the only pair I can walk in” or similar, but “I bought these shoes because they rock!””

Firmly agree.
Hence the flats I've linked, which really would look like you've chosen them because you love them!

Go for a shorter block heel. Very pretty, more comfortable and you won't be tottering around then.

Wear what you like also, who cares if you're slightly taller than him. Are women expected to tailor thier shoe collection to appease men. You can't help your height 😅

What's the problemo with being taller than your husband?

Haha I was going to ask this. I'm 5'11 so a permanent problem 😂

No headgear, and pops of colour should stay in the 90s

Sunbeds · 25/02/2026 09:29

Wow! Thank you for such a stunning list of ideas!

I have around 5 weeks so long enough to get shoes and try them next to the dress. You’ve given me sooo many ideas xx. I love all of them! Navy, gold, raspberry - all low/no heels and perfect.
I do totally approve of my son’s girlfriend so wouldn’t wear a black dress.
The event is at a hotel so everything happens indoors so no sinking into mud thankfully.
Please don’t fall out about the height issue. As long as everyone is loved, it doesn’t matter. And, as I was once told, we’re all the same height in bed 😁

You started it OP with you dead of "towering over" your DH. I'm not sure how high your heels might be, if they can create that effect, but what would be so terrible about it?

IsThisOkNow · 25/02/2026 09:38

I would not wear flesh coloured tights and tan/nude shoes in a million years. Black or the right shade of red, shoes, with black opaque tights.

IsThisOkNow · 25/02/2026 09:49

I get my ballet flats from this Italian company.
They do gold, navy and every colour!

BeautifulBrackets · 25/02/2026 09:59

I'd be tempted to try smoky grey tights with a navy dress - cooler neutral than typical flesh-coloured tights, which often don't look quite right because they aren't at all the same colour as the wearer's skin.

ScribblingPixie · 25/02/2026 11:13

There are some elegant flat/almost flat LK Bennett shoes much reduced on Brand Alley at the moment.

I dislike flesh coloured tights. I'd go with sheer grey or navy. I don't understand the veto on here re navy. My 2 very stylish assistants, late 20s, and mid 30s wear black, grey and navy sheer tights.

I'm not keen on most of the shoe suggestions with the exception of French Sole and the Italian equivalent

Sorry but as a tall person who ‘towers over’ her partner please can you let go of the misogyny that you need to be shorter than your partner.

NotMeAtAll · 25/02/2026 12:06

WonderousUs · 24/02/2026 20:43

Oh my.
However do you manage being that much taller than your DH?! Doesn't it affect things between you? And how others see you as a couple? Is he very short??

Are you serious?

deeahgwitch · 25/02/2026 12:26

MakemineaGandT · 24/02/2026 19:38

I don’t like those tan shoes with the dress at all - the heels are too high, the open toes look wrong with the dark colour of the dress, and the ankle strap is making the model’s legs look shorter (the strap acts as a ‘break’ in the line of the leg). I think sometimes when photos are taken to sell clothes, the stylist just puts models in a neutral pair of shoes that will ‘go’ with everything the model is being photographed in, to save on time. You can do a lot better!

I agree with you. Those tan shoes with the black dress are “fighting “ with each other.

Don't be like this towards the OP. She's looking forward to a nice time at her son's wedding. Let her stick to the enjoyment of looking at beautiful styles of flat shoes! 👣

Whilst sneering about the horror of appearing a bit taller than her DH? Ok.

I've been hankering after these for ages which may suit - I love the vintage look!

Also - get yourself a pretty bag and give your dh the rucksack!!

They're lovely. But then I love everything by Anonymous Copenhagen & recommend them on here all the time. Think I seem to have become their unofficial brand ambassador on MN - maybe I should ask them for a discount?!!

deeahgwitch · 25/02/2026 18:15

Kurt Geiger do a “Chelsea” shoe in black that could be nice. Sorry I can’t do links.
