Foundation recommendations for older skin

Can I please have your recommendations for lightish foundations that don’t sit on your skin and look cakey? I’m in my 40s, I’ve just hit peri menopause and my skin has changed so much. I’ve found a great skincare routine with Skin + Me products but I can’t find a foundation which works for me. All the ones I’ve tried recently sit in my crows feet and fine lines and make them look worse and sort of sit on top of my skin rather than absorb into it. I keep seeing Il Mikiage adverts on my feed - is it as great as the reviews say? Any other recommendations? I want a bit of cover to even out my skin tone but nothing too heavy. I don’t wear much make up.

I've tried ilmakiage, its not as good as it looks in the adverts in my opinion. Charlotte Tilbury magic serum and cream is fantastic under foundation. It really helps give a smooth appearance. Also like bare minerals powder foundation as ive found too many products using hyaluronic acid ends up causing pilling so I prefer to use Charlotte Tilbury creams with hyaluronic acid and then bare minerals powder foundation. Book a tutorial with them and see how it sits on your skin

Eborian CC, Lisa Eldridge Enhancing Skin Tint, Merit The Minimalist. I use all these and I’m in my early 40s.

Barrellturn · 22/02/2026 21:14

Eborian cc is great but even the fair one is quite orange I find. Armani silk is ok.

Tortephant · 22/02/2026 21:14

Ilia, Lisa Eldridge, Rare beauty

Estée Lauder Futurist is lovely

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/02/2026 21:16

Or, if you want very light, Nars tinted moisturiser.

Il makiage is very heavy. I like Bobbi brown weightless skin for full-ish coverage and Erborian cc or Loreal tinted serum for lighter. I like the look of the Lisa Eldridge but couldn't find a good colour match for me.

I’m using a L’Oréal bb gel now and it’s nice and light. Surprisingly good for the price. Has anyone tried Laura Geller? The baked stuff. I’m being hounded with ads on Facebook.

50yo here, I’ve just started using the Avon liquid powerstay, literally 3 weeks and so far I’m loving it. I’m using the palest pink and for the first time in my life I feel I’ve actually found a foundation that dose match my skin tone.

Are you prepping your skin properly and using a decent primer?

Go to somewhere like Sephora or Space NK and ask the assistants to help. I’m rubbish at finding a foundation. I liked the NARS one but even the assistant couldn’t match my skin colour so I went with the Lisa Eldridge skin tint. It’s good, gives enough coverage without feeling like a foundation.

ChaliceinWonderland · 22/02/2026 21:39

I'm 54 : clinique Even better foundation spf 15 is all you need.

anddeepbreathandsigh · 22/02/2026 21:39

I use No7 HydraLuminous Moisturising foundation. It’s apparently very like Charlotte Tilbury’s version but a fifth of the price

ThatGladTiger · 22/02/2026 21:49

I’ve switched over to Huda Easy Blur. It’s made especially for layering up. Some days I have one coat and I’m happy with the coverage. Other days I put more layers on and it doesn’t feel cakey or stick in lines. I love the flexibility of it and makes my face look lovely ☺️

NattyTiger · 22/02/2026 21:58

Reading with interest! I had all but given up on foundation. I’ve been using Sculpted by Aimee HydraTint for the last few weeks. I bought some of her skincare products too and I think I see an improvement in my skin.

sweetkitty · 22/02/2026 22:30

Armani - best I’ve tried

Yes I’m using a primer and a moisturiser underneath the foundation, so I do think it’s the foundation that’s the problem!

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone! There’s some on here I’ve never even heard of, so I’m glad I asked.

I think you just want a lighter formula. Foundation masks youthful skin and doesn't suit older skin either. I like Nars, Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue and the Aimee hydratint mentioned up thread. Trinny does one too but it's more expensive. Eborian I don't get on with, it's a bit too greasy for me. The BB.

HoratioBum · 23/02/2026 06:04

No7 Hydraluminous is excellent if you have combi or dry skin.

Recently I’ve been using Tirtir, a Korean brand - it’s in some Boots. They do a cushion foundation which you just pat on and honestly, it’s a game changer. Doesn’t settle in fine lines and still looks great at the end of the day.

Ooh yes, the Nars tinted moisturiser is lovely and light. I wear it when I want to give my skin a day off from foundation, and on holidays when I can't be faffed.

My every day foundation is Clinique Even Better Clinical serum foundation which works well for my mature skin. I've been using it for about six years now and I only realised how much better my skin is looking after someone commented on it and I took a good hard look at myself 😁

The Clinique shade I use is a great match for my skin, I blend it with a couple of pumps of Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel and use a damp beauty blender to apply. I don't apply foundation around my eyes so I can't comment on whether it settles into crows feet etc.

I did a huge amount of research into this once I hit my mid 40’s. I’m also now mindful of not spending a small fortune but love to have the luxury look I used to be able to afford. I use max factor miracle touch which is a cream based foundation. Spray my stipple brush beforehand and dab away. It can be applied super light or you can build it. I watched a YouTube video that said cream foundations were the best for mature skin and having tried the ones that get a lot of press such as the Laura Mercia mineral foundation decided that the cream definitely suits my skin better.

Agree it's very light..no real coverage in my experience.
