Foundation recommendations for older skin

Can I please have your recommendations for lightish foundations that don’t sit on your skin and look cakey? I’m in my 40s, I’ve just hit peri menopause and my skin has changed so much. I’ve found a great skincare routine with Skin + Me products but I can’t find a foundation which works for me. All the ones I’ve tried recently sit in my crows feet and fine lines and make them look worse and sort of sit on top of my skin rather than absorb into it. I keep seeing Il Mikiage adverts on my feed - is it as great as the reviews say? Any other recommendations? I want a bit of cover to even out my skin tone but nothing too heavy. I don’t wear much make up.

L’Oreal True Match Nude Plumping Serum. It’s a very light foundation. Doesn’t settle into my lines, never cakey, different undertones for cool/warm.

Doesn’t need a primer for me. I believe that if a product needs another product to make it work, then it doesn’t work.

@DanceMumTaxi the Laura Geller baked went orange on me. I wanted it to work for days when I just want to swish something powdery on quickly, but I’ve stuck with the L’Oreal above as it’s so good (and in all honestly takes seconds with a brush anyway!).

blackfriday1 · 23/02/2026 07:48

I was a massive Nars user for years and bought the L’Oreal True Match serum last year at the airport before going on holiday - just wanted something a bit lighter in the evening heat. I haven’t gone back to Nars, it’s great, and a fraction of the price! I’m 42 and it sits beautifully on my skin - lightweight, dewy, lasts all day and is really buildable. My older and my 76 year old mum both use it now too. I really recommend it.

SoScarletItWas · 23/02/2026 07:49

Hooray @blackfriday1 another convert! I agree, it’s everything you say. Love it. I have three bottles in my stash against the day they ever discontinue it.

Brightlittlecanary · 23/02/2026 07:53

Victoria Beckham the drops. Its outrageously expensive, but my god, it’s utterly brilliant and the best foundation I’ve ever used, I’m mid fifties,

it is hard to describe, but it sort of sinks into your skin, and leaves you with this smooth flawless base, that looks like your skin, and has a lovely glow.

it also contains skin care technology from Augustine Bader, so improves your skin when it’s worn.

a little goes a long way and it’s buildable. I was looking for something like you and kept seeing reviews, and thought fuck it, let’s see, it can’t be that good, it is.

Azuresky68 · 23/02/2026 07:53

Another vote for Cliniques Even Better...i am 69 and been using it for around 10 years. Gives good coverage and it's buildable. Doesn't look or feel like I am wearing makeup.
Ask for a sample at the Clinique counter or if you have more than one Clinique counter whee you shop get a sample from each!
Underneath I use an ELF primer.
I have used Cliniques Lash Power mascara for years too but when it comes to moisturiser I use Aldi or Nivea!

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 23/02/2026 07:54

Just to give you an option from the lower price end, I swear by this Rimmel BB Cream with Brightening Effect. I’m 53 and it doesn’t settle into my wrinkles. I use a good moisturiser first, and I’m careful how I apply under my eyes - I just get the tiniest dot on my finger and pat it in to the skin there.

I like to look sheer and glowing and this does the job.

Azuresky68 · 23/02/2026 07:43

Agree it's very light..no real coverage in my experience.

It just evens skin out. I like it for work/day to day.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/02/2026 07:59

@DanceMumTaxi the laura geller balance and brighten or whatever, is very light coverage, not much more than a powder. It does even things out a bit but doesn’t mask any blemishes or anything. I’m interested in their new one with more coverage. Can’t decide whether to try that or the ones mentioned on here

Shayisgreat · 23/02/2026 08:03

Fenty Eaze Drops has worked for me but skin deffo needs to be prepped first.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/02/2026 08:04

@blackfriday1 and @SoScarletItWas which one do you mean? There are 3 similar products on Amazon, but none is both ‘true match’ and ‘serum’. Good prices though- something I’d try!

I don't think you have to spend a lot of money on something OP.

I have always used the more pricey foundations during my lifetime. Until I had the same issue with everything being drying.

My absolute go to now is Revlon Illuminance Serum Tint. And it is really wallet friendly.

I don't even use primer any more either.

After I moisturize, I use SPF, and then use the tint.

It gives such a lovely glow.

I have the DIOR Forever Skin Perfect Foundation Stick and the KIKO Milano Skin Lover Intensive Serum Foundation. Both great foundations. The Dior is matt and the kiko dewy. And for concealer I recommend the by Terry one ! It’s the best

The one on the right with the pipette topper, it says plumping tinted serum on the bottle.

Whowhenwhatwear · 23/02/2026 08:11

For me it's the Garnier bb cream. light coverage, goes on smoothly and evens out skin tone, has light coverage.

SiobahnRoy · 23/02/2026 08:11

Another L’Oréal tinted plumping serum fan, great product and price, often on offer at boots too!

sociableintrovert123 · 23/02/2026 08:18

The L’Oreal tinted plumping serum is excellent. It’s so light but lasts all day and gives a lovely glowy finish.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/02/2026 08:24

Another vote for Clinique even better clinical. 65 and it doesn't settle anywhere but has just the right amount of coverage. Beats everything else I've tried hands down.

Furlane · 23/02/2026 08:32

Make sure the primer and foundation are compatible. The person at the Hourglass stand thought me this as I was getting fed up with it piling.

I like Lisa Eldridge tint in the summer when my skin isn’t dry. Eborian is good, my favourite is Fenty Eaze - I don’t bother with primer. I have tried so many! There was an amazing Chanel one, but they stopped doing it. I only needed to use a couple of drops - it lasted years!

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 23/02/2026 08:37

I have weirdly found the cheaper ones to be better as my skin ages (now 45). No7 hydraluminous as mentioned by others is my top recommendation. Also don’t find primer helpful. It might just be my skin type (combination/oily) but I find less is definitely more in terms of the number of products I put on my face.

erborian CC is great too

I have this too and love it. I have got Erborian cc too which is slightly better and higher SPF but way more expensive.

I second all of this. I’m 51 so I too know about the issues of foundation settling into lines etc but this just feels like having better skin. I have bought endless foundations, this one is the best I’ve ever used, it is magical.

blooooooor · 23/02/2026 08:50

Make sure you’re skin is really well mostruised and NEVER mix water and silicon based products as they will curdle on your skin. Maybe the ones you tried are too heavy coverage for you? Go to few beauty counters and ask to try some.

Brightlittlecanary · 23/02/2026 09:13

Yes me too, I’ve literally tried them all, from low price to high, and part of me was really hoping the Beckham one wasn’t going to be as good as reviews said, due to the cost, but it is.

fair play to her, her products do seem to be excellent, and as much as the price is eye watering, I do grudgingly believe it is worth it, as nothing else comes close.

Shayisgreat · 23/02/2026 13:41

I find that using the Charlotte Tilbury UV primer under Fenty Eaze really works. I use a damp beauty blender and the foundation just sits so beautifully and looks flawless.

StillSmallVoice · 23/02/2026 16:11

Eborian for me. I’m 65. I used Estée Lauder Double Wear for a long time till I got a generous sample of the Eborian and have used it ever since. Estée Lauder have just changed their formula. I have a sample of that which is disappointing, so I will stick with Eborian for now
