Is this too pale

We’re off to a wedding in March and my daughter wants me to enlist the MN massive to see if wearing this is ok? Is it too pale?

@IsItTooPink Is that the Vinted seller or your daughter in the dress? Sorry, but it squishes the wearer's boobs into pancakes so I don't think it's a good fit!

Pale pink + satin does tend to = bridesmaid as well. If it were pink but a different fabric, or satin in a different colour, either could work just fine.

However, that particular pink is also very saccharine & just not a great shade IMO. If it's not silk, then it would need to be a really good-quality synthetic for it not to look cheap - all those very pale pastel pinks/mint greens/pale blues look rubbish in cheap satins (& most other fabrics too, but then I personally don't like pale sugary pastel colours).

It also exposes too much flesh for a daytime wedding, even for a teenager/young woman. Maybe for a summer evening do - though I still think it looks cheap, but appreciate it just being one slightly fuzzy photo.

Even if your daughter were to wear a slip dress to a March wedding (they're only for summer ones IMO, with a jacket for the day part/ceremony), I don't think that's quite the right style. The 90s Kate Moss ones that have reappeared are looser (definitely not tight over the chest!!) & were/are based on 1930s shapes.

I will now apologise for my rather forensic put-down of the dress ... I'm just looking at it from a design point of view, as is my wont, & hope I haven't offended.

Pink does suit the wearer though. If your daughter likes that vibe, how about some of this one instead? It's a nicer shade of pink too (though my comment about the type of fabric still stands, so would depend on what it looks - & feels - like in the flesh).

It's still satin though - so to negate any possible bridesmaid vibes, I think accessories are key. Worn with a fake fur jacket, lace tights & sandals (which is what my funky art school goddaughter would wear to a smart do to impress!!), it could look really good??!!

This one is giving wee Willie winkie vibes.

Christ these are awful, definitely not for a ‘dress to impress’ wedding.

I actually like the second one quite a lot but:
a) I’d wear it to work, not a wedding, and
b) I’m nearly 50.

I was thinking of wearing this (in navy), with a colour hat / shoes etc, haven’t decided on colour yet, was thinking fuchsia?

I love your dress!
For your daughter, something like this might be better?

It looks cheap and very tacky. Totally inappropriate. She has a gorgeous figure and will look great in most styles.

FredaMountfitchet · 22/02/2026 22:32

Lovely dress
Looks gorgeous
Have to agree though ….. for a bridesmaid .

I agree: I think they look like an architect - or some other "creative" professional - going to the office.

But I do think full satin, as suggested by a few, is almost always a mistake. It's a bit like leggings worn with short tops: looks fine till you start moving and then the image is compromised greatly.

AlexandraPeppernose · 22/02/2026 23:39

My 21 year old is wearing something similar to a March wedding. I thought it was too evening but have been told by the youngsters at work that satin spaghetti strap maxis are the thing at the moment and totally acceptable with a little cardi

This is lovely

Random321 · 23/02/2026 00:24

Your navy dress is lovely.

The dress @Howilivenow2 posted are great suggestions for you daughter.

Almost all other options posted are bonkers imho.

CantBreathe90 · 23/02/2026 00:42

If you have to ask, IT'S ALWAYS TOO WHITE 😂

I'm envious of the gorgeous dress and your daughter's figure though. Have had to buy a wedding guest outfit recently, which I absolutely hate doing. So many things are wrong in some way; too pale, too dark, too casual, too bridesmaidy, trying to "upstage" the bride, too much skin on show, haven't made enough of an effort... Just a minefield. At least your DD doesn't also have to worry about looking like an overstuffed pillow though, in the wrong cut / material, which sadly I have to also factor in 😑 Be grateful for small mercies.

I'm a bit puzzled by your comment!

To me, leggings & a short top never look like anything much at all in aesthetic terms (bar sports-functional), whether the person is static or moving.

A satin slip dress, on the other hand, beautifully cut on the bias (ideally from silk satin, but a high-quality weighty synthetic satin can be decent) is a lovely garment - & it's made for movement!! Worn by the OP's daughter, it would be perfectly lovely for a wedding - just not a spaghetti-strapped version in slightly sickly bridesmaid pink ...

Some examples of what I mean by a silk satin dress looking glorious on a young woman, both still & in motion ... I rest my case!!!

Oh but I love a good hat 😂 I’m so old and out of the loop regarding fashion

I read that fascinators are a ‘no’ too?

Oh no! Why?? That and the thing about red 😔 Two more things to add to the list of problem wedding outfits!

Ophir · 23/02/2026 04:13

I think the pink dress is gorgeous and perfectly suitable

WashedUpInAustin · 23/02/2026 07:24

@IsItTooPink This one referenced by Tereseta, I think is absolutely perfect! Very Pink & I love the shape (maybe with a little something to cover the shoulders if needed, during the daytime)

Your Navy choice is also perfect.

Could I be really nosy & ask for a picture of the dress your daughter chooses?
I never get to go to anywhere where I can dress up anymore, but I do like looking at other people's choices on here!

bumphousebump · 23/02/2026 07:33

I think the pink dress looks perfect for an 18 dress to impress, it looks similar to the dresses young guests were wearing at weddings I’ve seen or been to. It’s sweet. But she might get cold!

bumphousebump · 23/02/2026 07:34

And the blue dress for you is lovely. Some of the suggestions….fucking hell.

Taste is such a personal thing isn't it, as to me that dress is bloody awful...awful colour, awful embellishment, awful extra bit of material hanging off the side.

Middlechild3 · 23/02/2026 07:45

Too pale, too bridesmaid dress, unsuitable as a mere guest.

Absolutely! Wouldn't it be boring if we all liked the same stuffGrin I love the bit of material hanging off the side, it makes it stand out in a good way, to me!

Well we have different taste, as some of those photos illustrate exactly what I'm not keen on: there is that difficult-to-get-right balance between having it too loose and breasts etc look like tennis balls in drawstring bags, or by attempting to have the cut tighter to provide some structure, you end up with the fabric pulling, evident in some photos here as well. Any lumps and bumps get kind of high-lighted by the way the light glances off the satin, but somehow the curves you want get lost in the cut with all the bagging and bunching. I'm also not a fan of the visible nipple, but clearly some people are as the full satin is a look that does get worn a lot.

I think VB's recent satin dress seemed reasonably well-cut for that sort of thing, but many are just not.

For an 18 year old? 😂

This thread has proved yet again that most people can’t even be bothered to read the OP let alone any other posts.
