What 3 things (not surgery) that have noticeably improved you skin?

I have so many cream and potions and I am a sucker for any new beauty product on the market. Half the time I'm not sure if any of it actually works but keep using it anyway. What 3 things would you say have actually improved your ageing skin? I religiously take collagen, but not sure if this is working and have started tret but forever have dry patches. I also wear sunscreen.

Going to exclude lifestyle headings like diet, water, sleep etc as they’re a given.

For me it was definitely reducing products. I use no more than 4 medical skincare products daily, and whereas previously I feel like I needed foundation and other makeup, I only use BB cream now as my skin is so good.

Routine:

  • Cleanse skin with miscellar water
  • Gentle face wash
  • Moisturiser
  • SPF50 during daytime - makes skin glowy in addition to protective effect

Used many products when younger but I notice the more I use, the more skin is prone to irritation etc. My skin is better than ever at 40 and I’m using less product than ever.

Currently using tretinoin (as I was advised it’ll make a bigger difference than Botox/ microneedling considering my skin condition) and while I don’t see an improvement as such in overall condition, I do see a reduction in any fine lines, pigmentation, and skin feels tighter.

Good skincare, I use Elemis cleansing balm followed by their toner and plumping moisturiser.
collagen powder and never having smoked.
i often get compliments about how I don’t look my age.

TheDenimPoet · 18/02/2026 13:50

I find that when I'm in a really simple habit of washing with water and moisturising, my skin looks amazing. I've never been one to put thing after thing on my skin, like these people you see online. I honestly don't think skin was made to be treated like that!

Drinking loads of water. People will come on here and be really snippy about how you get all your water from food etc, but that just doesnt explain how much better mine and my friends skin looks when we drink more water, sorry!
Using La Roche Posay Cicaplast as a night mask
Not eating chocolate - again, im sure people will come on and say there's no link but I have tracked it for years now and it definitely makes my skin go to shit!

I agree with this. Not eating chocolate has made the single biggest difference to my skin.

I also love Medik8 C-Tetra in the mornings. There are many creams and serums that I have tried which I felt made a massive difference but they are so spendy that I refuse to buy or recommend them.

MsPug · 18/02/2026 14:03

tretinoin
estee anr
6-8 pints of herbal tea (plain water is vile and an assault on my system)
limit alcohol
sunscreen I use as and when according to conditions. And don't come at me I'm 54 and a very fancy facial scan aged my skin at 47)

dc82 · 18/02/2026 14:05

Tretinoin (that’s made my skin glowy), very limited alcohol, double cleansing at night (oil cleanser first), drinking more water, sticking to my skincare routine every single day (I used to be awful for going to bed with make up on 🤦‍♀️), sunscreen every day!

P.S sleep I’m sure would help, but is one I really struggle with 😂

whymadam · 18/02/2026 14:05

Stop putting expensive gunk on your face, it does nothing. Use a good basic sunscreen every day (ask a skin clinician for a non-fancy brand one, because they're all the same and the added magic mermaid tears are fake). Use something basic like micellar water to cleanse at night and use a basic night cream (again, ask skin specialist). Never, ever put your face in the sun.
My godfather was a dermatologist. He said smoking did a little damage, but the sun did ALL the damage. Hats on!!

MsPug · 18/02/2026 14:06

Oh I forgot! Sunglasses! Even in winter if it's bright.

OrdinaryGirl · 18/02/2026 14:07

Botox in frown lines
Reverse Life marine hydrolysed collagen
Tretinoin via Skin + Me

Plus sleep, water yada yada…

HelenHywater · 18/02/2026 14:09

Wallywobbles · 18/02/2026 12:58

Using oestrogen vaginal cream added to my normal moisturizer.

Really? (I'm not being sceptical by the way, I just hadn't heard of this).

HelenHywater · 18/02/2026 14:10

For me it's been giving up sugar.

Carouseloflife · 18/02/2026 14:12

Factor 50 all year round
Drinking plenty of water
A good night’s sleep

Peoplefr · 18/02/2026 14:14

4 things:

Exercise 5/7 days (moderate walking) 1 hour+
SPF 50 on face, daily.
No less than 7 - 8 hours sleep every night.
Staying hydrated (splash of squash in water) very low/no alcohol.

Rottedtheanemones · 18/02/2026 14:14

Avene Hydrance Rich moisturiser makes my skin glowy.

I've found using just Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid keeps my skin clearer and less dry than tretinoin did.

I really rate the Medicube Zero Pore Pad wipes.

Other than that using a cream cleanser to properly cleanse each evening (I use the Skin and Me cleanser) not using harsh exfoliators and getting plenty of sleep. Rarely happens but I can see then difference when it does!

Tonissister · 18/02/2026 14:14

Nivea Q10. I sometimes use other moisturisers and then wonder why my skin looks so grey and wrinkled (Cerave!) then return to Nivea Q10 and look younger within a few days.

Reducing alcohol and increasing exercise.

Mixing Estee Lauder advance night repair serum into my moisturiser.

I really wanted this to work but aftef 2 bottles I couldn't see any real difference in my skin.

My 3 would be:

  1. good sleep/low stress,
  2. ++water/good diet
  3. decent, basic skin care - not necessarily expensive just taking time to exfoliate with a muslin cloth at least once a week and a decent moisturiser containing glycerin.

I suppose spf in summer as well when its really sunny.

Also, not wearing lots of makeup because covering up your skin with acres of slap isn't going to do it much good.

BirthdeighParteigh · 18/02/2026 14:33

Retinol, Botox, SPF.

I also get noticeable, results from:

  • reducing sugar and alcohol
  • hyaluronic acid sheet masks
  • Increasing water intake.

I do the first three consistently, and the last three when I’m trying to boost my appearance.

catera · 18/02/2026 14:37

Tretinoin
freeze frame serum by educated mess
no sun on my face

Goldbar31 · 18/02/2026 14:53

Tret, vit C (Obagi) and less fizz (boooo)

SoScarletItWas · 18/02/2026 14:57

Drink much water. So much water.

A very hydrating moisturiser- my skin didn’t improve with all the retinols and Tret and other stuff I threw at it. It likes moisture.

HiFU facial (although I’ve said that before on here and posters have warned about it causing loss of fullness - not something I’ve experienced).

Luckyingame · 18/02/2026 14:58

Harrietsaunt · 18/02/2026 11:10

No alcohol
Loads of sleep
No men

This poster beat me to it.
I will add, no children either.

I agree with not wearing lots of makeup. I didnt even wear foundation on my wedding day!

MargoLivebetter · 18/02/2026 15:00

Barely any alcohol.
HRT.
Facial massage and fascia release.
Lowish carb diet.

So far no potion or lotion I've tried has made any difference - other than a very temporary cosmetic plumping or smoothing.

CocksBolingey · 18/02/2026 15:04

Collagen peptides in coffee every morning
Tretinoin
Shark Cryo Glow face mask

ScottishHils · 18/02/2026 15:06

Acid toner, tretinoin (alternate days), vitamin C serum. Chuck in a facial with microneedling and LED mask for an unsolicited number 4.
