Help me decide on burgundy trainers

I have decided (possibly irrationally) that I need burgundy trainers to pull my wardrobe together. Please don’t ask me why – in my head they will magically make jeans and a skirt-with-black-tights look less ‘thrown on’.

I need something comfortable enough for lots of city walking, but are still ‘fashion’ rather than sports trainer. I’ve historically been an Adidas person (yes, I know, I’m basic), but I’m open to being told I need to branch out.

Current shortlist:
Adidas Samba OG:
https://www.asos.com/adidas-originals/adidas-originals-samba-og-trainers-in-burgundy-and-off-white/prd/205467079 - classic, but are they now so everywhere that I’ll look like I’ve been influenced by my teenage daughters?
Adidas Handball Spezial: https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/2,20/2156963705 - are these actually more comfortable than Sambas, or just a slightly different flavour of the same thing?
Gabor Nulon trainers:
https://www.gaborshoes.co.uk/womens-c1/trainers-c5/gabor-nulon-womens-trainers-p55175/s802005 – these are right at the very top of my budget, so I’d only stretch if they’re significantly more comfortable for walking. But do they look chic or have I wandered into “sensible shoe” territory?

All comments on style vs real-life comfort (all-day city walking, not just pottering to the car), I’d be very grateful.

And if the answer is “none of the above, here is the actual trainer you need”, I’m open to that too.

Be kind — I am clearly overthinking shoes 😅

Oh no!

The only trainer you could get away with wearing with black tights is an all black one, and hope people just don't look too closely at it. If it's a work uniform or something you're having to wear them with. Otherwise you need a boot, a shoe, or even something like a mary jane or a chunky loafer. But nothing like what you've linked! You'd have to go bare leg and ankle sock to pull off adidas with a skirt.

I love black tights but when worn with trainers I just feel like I'm off to school.

WashableVelvet · 16/02/2026 19:30

I seem to live in burgundy suede pumas with a gum sole (and have done since before they were fashionable 😂I was never tidy enough for white trainers)
It’s the tights I’m not convinced by though - maybe with hi tops it would work? I think sheer brown looks more current than black?
I’m finding I’m a bit too middle aged to instinctively get on board with visible socks but can sort of ease myself in with neutral coloured ankle socks.

I got mine in Sainsburys for £20, Adidas copies
Really comfy and look good

Naturesoak · 16/02/2026 19:44

I’m a bit of a brand snob when it comes to trainers, however I decided like you that I needed a pair of silver trainers at Christmas. I picked some up from Sainsbury’s on a whim and they are so comfy!! A bargain too and they have a few burgundy options

Butterbean21 · 16/02/2026 19:57

Sorry Im a liar mine are the darker version. Only bought them in Dec but cant find that colour online

The Adidas ones.

I got a good dupe for the adidas spezial trainers in burgundy from New Look and I love them. For me, I wanted the look but without leather. They don’t stock the ones I got anymore but have similar ones.

I ordered the Spezials, as I have the beigey brown ones which are so comfortable, but I found the burgundy was a little too purple toned for my liking.

We're they the same colour way ones, which they call maroon? I'm really hoping for a proper deep burgundy

I have those spezials. They are beautiful and soooo comfy, they have arch support which I wasn’t expecting when I ordered them.

I personally don’t love the gum outer sole with the burgundy, so I’d go for white. otherwise yes to the Adidas. The Gabor are a bit old fashioned for me.

@SuperSharpShooter you’ve reminded me how much I love AirMax 90s!

I like the gym sole! White soles get dirty or stained so quickly in the constant drizzly weather

They are definitely burgundy, not purpley at all imo.

Are they a deep burgundy, or more of a dark red or purple?

I know what you mean, and I like it on a different colour. I think I find it too similar - both warm colours. I like a gun sole on a blue or a light shoe.

Good to know, thanks. I'm leaning towards the spezials just for the reason that reviews seem to say they're more comfortable than the sambas

I’ve got Spezials in several colours and the burgundy are my most worn and favourite. The gum sole is great. Very comfortable with decent support. I wear mine at work and for a solid 10,000 steps with no issues. The Gabors are a hard no.

Flannelfeet · 16/02/2026 20:40

I have these to wear with wide leg jeans, they are so comfy aren't they?

So comfy! I have to stop myself wearing them everyday out of habit!

Greenfinger555 · 16/02/2026 21:24

I have the burgundy spezials- they are a great colour and go so well with lots of colours (black, grey, all shades of denim etc). I'm after the dark green pair next. They are so comfy.

I got an emerald velvet pair of chunky steve madden ones too in December, they are so gorgeous 😍. Spray them with scotch guard, that will keep them nice longer.

I got them in the sale on amazon 😃

Hattieandcake · 16/02/2026 22:49

I just got the burgundy w/ white stripe with gum sole from vinted new so about £20 off store price. I got sambas, gazelle I also have in other colours. I would say samba are better for narrower feet. I would go in store if you don’t have these style adidas to check as they do fit slightly differently.
