My DS is getting married the end of May. The wedding is going to be a relaxed barn/field/festival vibe.

I’m mid 60s size 12. My usual style is very casual and I like to feel a bit alternative without actually standing out and looking like a slightly bonkers ageing hippy.

Where might I start looking for something that fits this admittedly fairly narrow spec?

Alternative / boho really isn’t a narrow spec , especially for women of a certain age , how have you managed to clothe yourself thus far ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2026 08:10

I think the OP needs to reply more as we’re mostly shooting in the dark here. Also,I don’t think alternative is actually what she’s looking for.

That green Pase Eight dress is pretty but very ordinary looking for a wedding.

Many thanks for all your suggestions there’s some lovely pieces I’ve seen. From the ones I’ve seen I can say

Im not keen on large vibrant prints - I prefer block colours or smaller florals
Im trying to find a sweet spot between layered/draped and a bit fitted
I don’t want to scream ‘notice me’ but I’d quite like murmurs of admiration at my marvellous sense of style
Trying to avoid straying into eccentric acid casualty territory

The cost issue - that’s more about justification of costs for something I’d only realistically wear for a day - my lifestyle doesn’t really include any events that call for this sort of item

Love this description.

@damekindness as someone also in their mid-sixties I would caution that if you have any other family, or any social life, you’re likely to find that the next few years will involve an increasing number of Events. Other weddings (the children and grandchildren of your own associates), christenings, retirement parties, ‘big’ birthday parties, plus the inevitable funerals. You would be well advised to invest in one or two items that can provide a versatile core event wardrobe. There’s absolutely no need to waste time, effort, and money on a throwaway outfit. (That’s what hiring is for.) Buy something decent that you’ll want to wear again and again.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2026 09:01

Good point. A block coloured dress that could take different accessories could be useful in the future.

Or you could look at hiring a dress OP?

Also worth spending half an hour googling, ‘Draped midi dress’ and seeing what comes up.

Is OP a writer? She should be! I also loved this and then chuckled at 'eccentric acid casualty territory'.

my other suggestion is to check out the supermarkets. I quite often find a gem there although you have to scour them to check the fabric and if they look cheap. I got this skirt from Asda and it’s lovely and a quick search just now came up with this dress which could look cool

As a caveat, I veer towards the rock hen, so often not “age appropriate”

This sort of skirt is a good call, as long as it doesn’t even remotely look like whatever any bridesmaids are wearing, if there are any.

Buy Jolie Moi Red High Neck Angel Sleeve Chiffon Maxi Dress from the Next UK online shop

I've just bought this one for a wedding.. love the high neck / shoulders covered vibes! I'm a 12 but the 14 fits perfectly. The wedding is March so I'm going to wear with some block heel ankle boots 😊

B0D · 17/02/2026 13:57

I bought a nice dress from 100 stars and dressed it up with accessories.

CharlotteCChapel · 17/02/2026 15:07

Roman have a lot of Rixo like dresses this year.

Mumwithbaggage · 17/02/2026 17:57

I so want to love Rixo dresses but sadly they just don't work on me - a pity as the length is great. The V necks are often too low and some of their fabrics are pretty see through.

I must say, I was prepared to sneer when Roman was mentioned but there are some great links there! I'm probably put off by our local outlet shop - harsh coloured separates and shiny stretchy fabrics.

Following with notice as I've been after something similar for dd1's wedding.

Absolutely agree about Roman shops. I have a friend who often buys from Roman and looks nice, but the shops are just awful. I’ve only ever seen one nice thing.

You may think me crazy but have you considered Shein? You could get many options for £150 and send them all back if none suitable. I simply searched BOHO Chic 😊

They will look NOTHING like that in real life!

Google Shein expectation vs reality 😂
