Too white for a wedding guest dress?

EndlessCupsofSugaryTea · 14/02/2026 14:00

I have my eye on this for a spring wedding. I love prints, it’s silk and is in the sale - perfect combination.

However, I showed it to my mother and she said “But it’s white!” in a horrified way. I was bewildered. I don’t believe most people’s first thought on looking at this would be “white”. To me, it’s all about the print - and in any case, the background looks more cream to me.

I love it, but not for the first time, my mother has created a nagging doubt. Would anyone really think I was trying to look remotely bridal in this?

I think you could get away with it but really, why would you risk offending someone?

You could go for the navy version:
https://www.hobbs.com/product/eva-floral-silk-dress/0224-5458-3793L00-NAVY-MULTI.html
Even if the bride says yes to your dress, and means it, there will be some people who are all about the etiquette and quietly(best case scenario) judging you.

That's nice! @EndlessCupsofSugaryTea what about the same dress but in navy?

That one is cheaper, too!

Also completely out of stock, unfortunately 🙁 But they do have something similar in green, which might work:

Nope, no way. The fact that the main front panel is so white makes it look very white. If it was a white background but the flowers were evenly all over it, it would be fine.

You're comparing men wearing white shirts (with a suit!) at a wedding, to a woman wearing an almost white dress at a wedding? Confused The 2 are nowhere near the same!!!

No I'm point out that no one complains about a 'flash of white' from a shirt 'drawing the eye' away from the bride. Or suggests that a bloke in a green suit is a jealous harpie trying to 'curse' the wedding.

Fgs my son is ND

the op didn’t understand what “come on now” meant

So you think because your son is ND, that entitles you to ask ?

No, listen to your Mum’s advice.

A little note we received in a wedding invite.
Please don’t be mean
Only the Bride should be seen
in white or cream!

My Aunt still turned up in a white flouncy maxi dress, huge white hat, white shoes/bag. She’s now known as Miss Haversham. Miss H for short. She looked an absolute fool, the Photographer was amazing and moved her to the back of the professional photos.

I am cringeing at that note. Have people forgotten what weddings and marriage are about. Wow.

flightyfighter · 14/02/2026 16:16

There are so many choices of wedding guest dresses why go white/cream just in case it does offend? The navy version as posted above looks lovely. Tons of similar stuff in Monsoon, Phase Eight, Hobbs etc.

Now now ladies - just agree to disagree so we can get back to post purpose

we want know if you’re going to wear the dress OP?

I think enough people have said it’s too much like a bridal dress for a second wedding to put me off. I have no concerns that the bride would wear anything similar - she will definitely be going full “Say Yes to the Dress” - but it’s starting to concern me now.

Sorry no, I don’t think it’s appropriate for a wedding guest unless you don’t mind upsetting people. I personally don’t have an issue with white/cream at weddings. My own mother wore a long cream dress to my wedding. She looked great. Didn’t occur to me to mind. I have worn a cream dress to a wedding too. But it was short and had feathers on it and didn’t look remotely like a wedding gown. The one you posted is lovely, but it is too similar to a wedding gown. I can easily see a bride choosing it to wear. I think it not worth the risk myself.

Yestocoffeeatnight86 · 14/02/2026 16:18

no don’t do it.

MissSpindle · 14/02/2026 16:19

Yes it is too white/bridal. I didn't read the full title at first and thought you were asking if it was a suitable wedding dress, but a wedding guest dress? Absolutely not.

Ridiculous post about men’s white shirts!

not similar at all

It should. Even if she doesn't mind, it's completely inappropriate.

But the poster who found it in green - absolutely fine. You just need a different background colour.

Oh that is nice @EndlessCupsofSugaryTea Smile Yeah, maybe go for this!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 14/02/2026 16:21

From a distance it’s just white. White with details is still white.

AsIfIWish · 14/02/2026 16:22

I think it's fine. Especially if all your accessories are colourful. At every wedding I've been to, most people have been in light/pastel/flowery clothes. I think this will fit well. Perhaps avoid standing next to the bride in photos, if you think it's a problem, but I wouldn't go so far as to not wear it.

50lbstolose · 14/02/2026 16:22

It’s beautiful, where is it from?

SanFranAndCali · 14/02/2026 16:23

It does actually look quite bridal though, in spite of the coloured flowers. i could easily see a bride wanting a low key dress picking that. It's lovely but it's very borderline. If you lost the white shoes and made sure all your accessories were in a strong colour you could get away with it, but personally I wouldn't risk it.

It's nowhere near as nice in the navy though. The flowers look a bit bright and gaudy. Shame. The white one is gorgeous but really not suitable.

Aluna · 14/02/2026 16:26

I think it’s very pretty but you’d look like a bridesmaid.

Confused A man in a white shirt (with his suit) as a wedding guest is nothing like a woman turning up in a white dress. I can't believe you are comparing the two.

I mean, really..............?!
