Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Tresseme advertises itself as "salon quality hair care" when it clearly is nothing like an expensive salon brand.

Baylis and Harding - I'm thinking of their gift sets, which are beautifully packaged to look much more expensive than they are.

Soap and Glory is marketed with an old style functional appeal, like Benefit.

Im all these brands are using marketing to look better than the actual product. I'm sure the products are fine, but they are not the premium products they pretend to be.

I'll add Ferrero Rocher and Lindors to that list!

No! The whole point of a Dry Robe is that it is designed to put on when you are WET so that you can get changed under it! That is why they are huge and lined in the way that they are. They are not just massive baggy warm coats that you wear on top of dry clothing. The Dry is as in “get dried” not” keeps you dry”.

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Edited

Why’s it such a big deal? Trainers were originally designed as a comfortable, functional shoe for sport and now people wear them all the time. It’s almost like things can have one use but then that has evolves.

I think because it's been adopted by the road men wannabe types.

Thanks @GenechandlerHeyMrBigshotNsoul but what are 'road men wannabe types'?

Its just a bit of a middle aged, middle class, non-descript dad brand. There ere was a time a few years ago where it seemed to be the only brand dads would wear

I think a lot of their stuff is nice, its just such a 'sheep' brand that I wouldn't wear anything with their logo on it

I wouldn’t have had a clue about that 🫤😁

The actual jewellery is ok by which I mean the proper stuff. They have very pretty diamonds in the better colour grades.

But I agree the stuff with the big hallmarks at "affordable prices" is a different mood.

River Island is a brand that has COMPLETELY changed since it first came out in the last 80s when I was around 16. The shops were fairly class, they had Ella Fitzgerald and the like playing over the speakers. I didn't go there for many years and got a big shock next time I went in there years later. Looked like a shop for hookers.

I was gutted when they changed everything from the original RI to just another generic shop. It used to play Cab Calloway and had a lovely old jazz feel to the place. Haven’t be in for years but have still never forgiven them!

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

What do the words mean?

Sorry OP Adanola.

Michael Kors, Holland Cooper, Gucci (but only the heavily branded stuff). In fact, anything covered in logos is tacky

What do the words mean?

Google AI says “It is not a phrase commonly used in Japanese, but rather a literal translation of "Maximum Dry" created using machine translation.”

Anything designer, Gucci, Louis Vuitton (awful), Crocs!!!!!!!!!

Couldn’t agree more.

I look at clothes on here and in real life and I do judge-in the sense of "I'd never wear that"

I think a lot of what is suggested on here, especially "occasion" wear, is hideous. I might say so on here. I'd never say so in real life. In real life most people's clothes are just a bit well, ordinary, a bit dull. but I'd never say so out loud.

Clothes for me, after they've fulfilled their primary functions of covering your nakedness and coping with the weather, should be fun.

Comparing this thread with a recent "how to look polished" thread makes me think the people in the "tacky" brands might be having more fun than the "polished" bunch. [dressing in the "polished" stuff sounded expensive and hard work to look expensively dull. And no, if I meet any "polished" posters I won't say that out loud either]

I've clocked one "tacky" brand I own. [And really Radley bags? Mid range, well made, long lasting and practical cross body bags are tacky??]

I don't own the brands deemed to be "tacky" on this thread because I simply don't like them - in the same way I don't own Sezanne, Phase Eight, Roman, Converse because I don't like them.

I don't think any brand is tacky except offensive and sexist slogan t-shirts and children's clothes with stupidly gendered slogans.

soddingspiderseason · 12/02/2026 23:30

PLouise. Tackyness defined in a lip gloss.

I wear Montane and Rab - both good outdoor brands which last years (and are British so put money into our economy). Rucksacks are usually Lowe Alpine (ten years and still going strong) and my boots are either Salomon or Hanwag or La Sportiva. Trail running shoes are La Sportiva. Socks are Bridgedales. Also check out Mammut and Alpkit - the latter is currently in administration but should be done according to reports.

BTW Rab have two outlets which are brilliant - one in Somercotesbin Derbyshire and one in Northwich. No website but find them on Facebook (called Mountain Outfitters there). Hope that all helps!

That's brilliant thank you! I have a Rab jacket and Inov 8 trail shoes. Like the look of La Sportiva, do they come up quite narrow? Sorry to derail from the general theme of the thread to everyone else

I have one, I do use it for paddle boarding and swimming but it's so warm and dry that is been creeping into my day to day wear. I had to laugh as my friend has been mercilessly mocking me for being a dry robe w*nker but when we were in Cornwall I took the older kids body boarding and she ended up putting it on while she was playing on the beach with the younger ones. Anyway I basically had to surgically remove it from her at the end of the week and she's since bought one for walking her dog 😂

Edited

I am a wild swimmer but mine (regatta version) has made it out a lot in the incessant rain and wind so far this year.

And there's been no opportunity to swim in the wild seas.

I look utterly ridiculous but I am warm and dry so no longer care.

New Balance is on the list for me from working in a deprived area, heavy benefit reliance, all NB trainer wearers

I see Pandora as a brand targeting teens and young adults. I don't think it's tacky or exploitative. It provides a nice shopping experience to young people within their price bracket.

I’m 59, and I have only just managed to buy my first Pandora jewellery in the last couple of months. My daughter, although been given Pandora gifts before, is the same.

Not everyone can afford it easily.

PlumDeNomNomNom · 12/02/2026 11:38

Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.

Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!

Why can’t anyone walk in off the street and buy from any shop they want?

Flomingho · 13/02/2026 02:49

WiltedLettuce · 12/02/2026 12:39

I agree. Any social group which has a kind of 'uniform' to guage acceptability is a bit tacky, regardless of whether it's North Face, Lululemon or Superdry.

Agree if I don't like a brand, I don't buy it but I don't see the point on judging others for buying what makes them happy.

Airyfaerie · 13/02/2026 03:29

Anything with a huge logo on it - especially high end designer brands (guess, gucci, Louis vuitton spring to mind), it just screams "look at me and how much money I spent on this tacky piece of clothing"
