How many pairs of pants do you have?

IWantToHibernate · 10/02/2026 20:39

I have about 40ish and wash them all together once a month. I know this may be a bit odd but it feels weird to wash with the regular washing. Plus I want to make sure I use them all.

I saw a post on social media that said underwear should be replaced every 6 months which seems crazy unless you only have about 7 pairs.

Two. One for the doctor and one for the leg waxer. I interchange them occasionally.

Same here, but my sister and I share them 👍🏼

gototogo · 10/02/2026 22:31

Maybe 25 pairs in varying degrees of repair. I tend to buy a 7 pack before heading on holiday for ease then meanwhile throw out as and when they no longer are fit for purpose eg elastic gone. They go in the standard wash with everything else. I have a couple of nice sets which I do hand wash

Why the need, they’re not that expensive !

All this talk of bacteria and festering: do people not wear panty liners?
Genuine question!

Never in my life.

I’m clean but still leak bodily fluids that I wouldn’t want sitting there for 30 days.

Why? What do you think will happen to them?

Calliopespa · 10/02/2026 22:39

Once a month!!!!!????

I'd be fishing them out of the laundry basket with tongs and rubber gloves at that point.

Miranda65 · 10/02/2026 22:40

Er..... who counts their pants? When they get really tatty, a few will go in the bin, and a few new pairs purchased. But I don't do a stocktake!

No.

Cotton is a better surface to have against your skin.

I cant imagine not wearing them especially when you’re older!

I actually do the opposite. I take all the older ones on holiday and throw them out as I wear them. Saves lugging unwashed pants around! Then I get home and buy my new ones.

But a similar concept, only in reverse.

BeaTwix · 10/02/2026 22:44

Probably about 15-20 pairs. I need two pairs on the days I go to the gym (which is about 3x/ week) and I reach crisis point if life intervenes and I don't manage to do any laundry for 10 days.

I've at least moved past the point I was in in my early twenties/ very junior doctor days when I used to end up going to M&S to buy clean clothes and underwear as my work schedule was so punishing I had no time to do laundry.

Isitoveryet25 · 10/02/2026 22:49

About 30 pairs or so.

replacing them every 6 months is ridiculous. I replace mine about every 2-5 years!

Washing machine is on every day in our house (family of 4) so all underwear just gets washed in daily with everything else.

Nosejobnelly · 10/02/2026 22:51

Maybe 20? I need up chuck some out though. I just wash w normal washing.

ilovepixie · 10/02/2026 22:52

🤮🤮 at 40 day old dirty knickers in the wash basket!

Fgfgfg · 10/02/2026 22:56

Cyclingmummy1 · 10/02/2026 22:18

A couple of dozen. I put the freshly washed (and ironed) ones at the bottom of the pile so they are worn roughly in rotation.

You iron them? 😯

BrunchBarBandit · 10/02/2026 22:59

15 black thongs, 8 cream thongs, 2 pairs black full arse knickers in case I go to the dr/physio (learnt that the hard way), 3 high waist/short leg shapewear. There’s also a selection of fancy matching bras and pants that I’ve bought but hardly worn over the years as I feel a bit trussed up in a matching set.

My everyday underwear just goes in the wash with the rest of the mixed laundry on 40 degrees.

Walker1178 · 10/02/2026 22:59

I’ve got 10 bras in a variety of colours, each one has 2 matching pairs of pants. I absolutely would not be saving them all up for a month, once worn they go in the next wash load.

My image of hell is a place where you get handed a thong at the gate and told you have to wear it for eternity.

No way am I replacing pants after 6 months. How wasteful and ridiculous

Sounds like something promoted by people who sell pants.

Gremlins101 · 10/02/2026 23:08

I dont know how many pairs, 20 or so, but I just chuck them in the laundry at the end of the day and wash them with everything else on 30 degrees. I chuck them out when they are worn out (years) and not on some arbitrary time limit.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/02/2026 23:09

I recently bought two five packs of M&S boy shorts for general day to day, and a five pack of thongs to wear with leggings for reformer, and a five pack of Primark shorts for bed. All black, as pretty much all my bras are black except a couple of nude ones. Chucked most of the rest bar a couple of nude knickers for with eg linen trousers. I don’t do special underwear laundry at all, they just go in with the rest. I have a Mirena coil now so don’t have periods - but when I did if there was any leakage I’d cold rinse them before washing.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 10/02/2026 23:15

Allseeingallknowing · 10/02/2026 22:28

Why is there a need to iron pants? You only need to smooth them. Your body heat “irons” creases out.

To kill bacteria left after washing although I assume modern day laundry soap and machines take away the need for all that now

shuffleofftobuffalo · 10/02/2026 23:16

I’ve probably got about 40 pairs. I change them morning and evening. They go in the wash at the same time as other clothes whatever day that is - can’t imagine leaving them for a month!

I have never heard of replacing pants after 6 months. Would love to know the rationale - does the washing machine not do to clean them? (See also dog bowl in dishWASHER arguments)
