Tea dress for Italian honeymoon

TeaChocKitKat · 07/02/2026 09:25

Im 45 and getting married in Italy in May. I'm 5ft tall and a curvy size 12/14 (days of being a size 8 are gone in spite of my best efforts to lose weight so feel quite self conscious about that). I'd like to get a couple of nice flattering dresses for while we are away. I find A line flattering so Im thinking of tea dresses. I'm blonde and have fair skin.
I dont want to spend too much, certainly less than £100 on each.
Any suggestions?

If it helps, we will mostly be in the south. Our last couple of days will be in the north where im expecting to be in jeans or trousers. The dresses would be more for our time in the Amalfi coast etc.

It should be between 15/16-22/23 - & obviously quite windy by the sea. Personally I’d have a cardigan or light jacket with me. And cooler at night than it is in the summer.

I’m Italian. English people think May in Italy is summer weather - it’s not. And yes it can rain in May.

But compared to the UK, Italy is a lot warmer and the temperature does vary across the country. I spent the whole of May in Puglia a few years ago and it was lovely t shirt weather. I've been to Southern Italy and Sicily several times and May and September are always my favourite times to go. July/August reached the high 90° last time I was there which was far too much for me.

evtheria · 08/02/2026 13:40

I’d get a Realisation Par or Reformation one - on sale/rented/second hand. They have tea dresses that aren’t too frumpy, and in lightweight fabrics.

Get yourself to SeaSalt! They specialise in that kind of dress for “ladies of a certain age”.

45 isn’t a ‘certain age’. Sea salt is so dreary.

Not necessarily, depends where you are. We’ve had snow in April (Toscana). My point was really that the mistake that UK and US tourists make is to think that May is summer because it’s a med country - and then they’re disappointed - it rains a bit or it’s not quite warm enough to use the pool comfortably - it’s more variable than high season and the nights are cooler.

This came up as a poster was saying a particular dress was too much for May in Italy - but it would be fine.

BunnyLake · 08/02/2026 14:16

That Liberty dress is as frumpy as they come 😂

Realisation dresses are lovely, I have several - some I bought in the sale, some on Depop. You can pick them up on Vinted and eBay.

I disagree. It’s simply cut, and I don’t think the model has the right figure for it, but with a pair of leather sandals and sunglasses it’s a good spring dress in good quality cotton with a classic Liberty print. Admittedly more English in style than the other options I provided though.

It is dreary and I seem to have offended people by saying so but it’s true. I don’t know why so many mumsnetters are so reliant on these shops.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2026 09:33

Oh god no it doesn’t!

I don’t object to seasalt and fat Face per se. But I just don’t think they’d cut it for a chic Italian honeymoon vibe. At all.

I am hovering over the buy button on the liberty dress.

It’s a bargain! I love Liberty sooo much and the cotton is so cool and light in the summer

MrsBridgetMcClusky · 08/02/2026 14:58

Sorry if someone has already answered the question...

I don't find Nobody Child's overly generous. I'd probably go for the 14 rather than the 12 (depending on the style)

By the way, I had an absolutely gorgeous dress in the petite section of Next on sale (blue and white floral midi strapless - not exactly what you're after, and probably sold out now as was a complete bargain) Reason I'm mentioning, is that the quality was beautiful and it was lined. I'd check out the petite section for tea dresses in case you are lucky too.

Your honeymoon sounds like it will be magical.

MrsBridgetMcClusky · 08/02/2026 15:05

It's sold out but just showing for info.

I spotted this in Sainsbury’s today and it was lovely… I think their summer stuff is much better than the winter stuff.

I am 55 and too young for the likes of Joules, Seasalt, Fatface and White Stuff ;-)

CharlieSays13 · 08/02/2026 17:22

Have a scroll of Roman, they have some lovely tea dresses

NamingNoNames · 08/02/2026 17:25

@Wtfdoidoplease , That Liberty dress is far frumpier than FatFace and SeaSalt.

@KnickerlessParsons , OP is not a 'lady of a certain age'.

Mycatislickinghisbum · 08/02/2026 01:20

The quality isn't that great though

I find them to be very poor quality.

TeaChocKitKat · 08/02/2026 00:07

Oh some lovely suggestions here - thank you! I particularly like the look of some of the dresses from nobody's child. Am tempted to order a couple, how do the sizes come up?

They're not generous in the bust area.

What about me really nice one from Rixo, rather than two cheaper ones…

Drooling over that!

Harvey Nics and The Outnet have some good discounts on Rixo. A fair few under £100 if you trawl for sizes

As well as Rixo (so easy to wear / flattering - any time I wear something from there it feels fun and special, because they have a vintage feel they feel timeless), I also find Ghost very flattering and at a lower price point. Always a good discount on sale items

have a wonderful trip

canisquaeso · 08/02/2026 20:56

If you’re not looking to spend too much, I’d decide on a few brands and sizes and keep an eye out on Vinted as well. You have plenty of time til May.

I find Never Fully Dressed dresses quite flattering, although I do think their quality has been shifting, but that’s expected as brands grow………….

Is there a reason you want tea dresses? What kind of honeymoon are you having?
And whereabouts in Italy are you going? As the weather varies. Venice for example can still be quite cool.
Try Scamp and Dude, Ivy, Eleven Loves, Me&Em.
Congratulations on your wedding btw
