How much for hair colouring, cut and tip these days

My hairdresser has just increased her prices and I’m wondering how much people are paying these days. I have highlights/lowlights regularly (2 colours to blend greys) with foils and then a cut and blow dry, although it’s maintenance so not much to cut off in long hair. How much would you be happy to pay and how much would you tip? I’m in the Midlands.

Thanks all for these answers. Sounds like I’m out of touch with what’s a ‘usual’ price these days, as most are paying well over £100 and some over £200 (!!!) but f@&k me, the price of hair care is getting ridiculous these days! I asked my husband what he thought my hair cost and he guessed £40…..errr no! Definitely not!

I’m sw London. I tend to have half head of high/low lights once or twice a year and occasional top ups in between
shoulder length hair
plus wash cut and blow dry it’s never less than £180 and often way more than £200

i tried using a more junior stylist but they are never as good with the colour at the top one so does not last as long

I tend to go to independent hair salons.

However I’m between hair dressers at the moment as mine found love Down Under and has not returned!!

i would love a mobile hair dresser if I can find one good with colour.

Translatethedog · 06/02/2026 05:56

£60 for colour, cut and blow dry.
I tip because she’s amazing and because I can.

psuedocream3 · 06/02/2026 08:10

South East here, I think last time I trialled a hairdresser it was cut, highlights, wash blowdry etc was £180, but generally its always over £200 most places. I do my own now as I'm never happy with salon colour, I always get a much better result at home, I think for the bonded bleach, peroxide, toners (blonde and shadow root) and hair foils, it costs me around £15 for me to freshen up my blonde and do my roots.

Wherethewildthingsaresleeping · 06/02/2026 08:34

It's very much location based because salons have to pay business rates and overheads for the building. Staff have high mortgages!

I pay around £155 for a T section of highlights, cut and blow dry.
south east.

Cut and dry alone is around £80.

I don't tip.

I buy the salon some little goodies at Christmas and give my stylist a generous gift too.

I’ve got a short bob and I have a tint to cover my greys, and then vivid colour panel put in, which requires bleaching first. Costs £165.

I don’t tip my stylist because she’s the salon owner and she’s adamant that it isn’t required. When someone else does it or an apprentice washes it, an option comes up on the card machine to tip them, but when it’s the salon owner she disables that option so people can’t tip her.

Wow I would love that. I get so anxious around tips at the hair dresser. I just have cut and blow dry and it's £70. I tend to give a tenner at Christmas.

I actually leave a long gap since the price has risen as I feel it's too much, actually going somewhere else cheaper next month and the whole tip anxiety can start again!!!

TyingTreesTogether · 06/02/2026 08:48

@Sunshineandrainbow I don't tip my hairdresser, just give her a bonus at Christmas and I am there every 6 weeks. My hair is mostly grey, a combination of white, silver and dark grey but mostly light as I am naturally blonde and my hair is bleached blonde with an ash tone. My roots are done every time as detailed above.

The best way to find cheaper hairdressers is look for ones not on high streets,or have it cut by a mobile hairdresser, they have fewer overheads. I live in a city but travel to a local town so it is a much cheaper option.

Start now by not tipping, just pay the amount owed and free yourself from the tipping madness.

Wherethewildthingsaresleeping · 06/02/2026 08:59

Tipping it out of date IMO.

It's patronising and shouldn't be done. It's embarrassing for everyone.

Staff should not rely on tips for a living wage.

The price is the price. I don't want to add on another 10% for something that is already getting close to £200.

And I expect good service whether I'm tipping or not.

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 06/02/2026 09:01

My daughter pays £90 for a cut and colour.

Arse end of Cumbria area.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/02/2026 09:14

I’m paying)150 for mine today. No tulip though. As I don’t tip anything.

AgnesMcDoo · 06/02/2026 09:48

£105 for semi-permanent colouring and a cut and blow dry

Annaport · 06/02/2026 11:17

East Midlands (Derby) just paid 178 for full head highlights, olaplex treatment, cut and blow dry.

you must be quite skilled though? How do you do it on yourself? I always used to colour my own hair and got quite good at it, but in the last few years I’ve developed an allergy to darker hair dye (lymph nodes pop up in my neck, as well as itchiness and sore scalp/ears) so I’ve had to move towards bleach and a hairdresser!

Fuck. Me.
My hairdresser comes to my house, takes half an inch off my hair and puts on my Clairol Nice n easy all for the princely sum of £34.
I must remind my DH how low maintenance I am 😂

Ha! Yes I often remind my DH how low maintenance I am too! I do my own colours too. A simple box colour. I got sick of the hours of just sitting there and the cost is extortionate. I have a wash and cut as a stand in when I get a day off. I never stick to the same salon. The last one was £35 for the cleanse and cut and I stupidly got stung nearly £30 for a styling spray I thought would be a tenner!! Then I tipped a fiver so the total was nearly £70. I won't go again for about 3 months so that kind of justified it. I'm Midlands and hate hair salons 😆

You don't need to tip hairdressers anymore. They are on the same wage as everyone else - often more. We may as well tip Janet on the checkout in Morrisons, or Dave on the fruit and veg stall on the market, or the optician, or the dentist, or the pharmacy assistants who give you your meds.

It's outdated and actually insulting. It suggests you think they're beneath you, they're poor, and they need financial support.

Also, I am North Midlands, and £75 to £85 is what my hairdresser charges for what you are talking about (depending on the length of your hair..) I am gobsmacked at the poster who said £40. Most salons near me wouldn't even do a dry cut for that. Some charge £150, (the more 'swanky' ones,) but the hairdresser I go to who is a middle aged woman and her 30 y.o. daughter charge £75-85. Even before Covid, the cheaper hairdresser charged about £50 to £55 for what you want @Stalygirl

kittykarate · 06/02/2026 12:53

Half skull of foils, 2 colours, cut and blow dry on short hair in a salon was £120 in South Manchester

MummyPig21 · 06/02/2026 13:03

I have a graduated bob, half head of bleach foils and cut and blow dry is £55. A full head would be £75,
I know I’m very lucky.
My previous hairdresser was £75 for half head etc.
I’m south/south east coast.

PennyWorth · 06/02/2026 13:06

I’m shocked at most of these prices.
£90 full head highlights, cut, blow dry in NW London by a mobile hairdresser.

ArtyFarty29 · 06/02/2026 13:20

I pay £60 for colour, wash cut and blow dry for hair just below the shoulders. But it’s not a trendy salon, just a local neighbourhood one on a dodgy street. Very happy with the results though.

Talkingdonut · 06/02/2026 14:19

I pay £130 for that in Somerset

Insulting? Nobody ever offers me my tips back!

Depends your motivation for giving a tip. I do it to say thanks to the person not the job role. I don't do it to supplement their wages.

Each to their own but to say its insulting in the UK is a bit daft.

Anyway, I am in Yorkshire and I pay £100 including tip for root touch up , cut and blow dry ( shoulder length hair). For a 2 hour appointment

I always used to colour my own hair and got quite good at it, but in the last few years I’ve developed an allergy to darker hair dye (lymph nodes pop up in my neck, as well as itchiness and sore scalp/ears) so I’ve had to move towards bleach and a hairdresser!

I'm not sure about skilled, but I know my hair better than most hairdressers which helps. I think last July was the last time I went to a proper hairdressers.

I have always been unsatisfied with the colour so i've always used my own toner, I use Wella Illumina Hair Toner 10/81 and mix that with 3% peroxide, leave it until it tones evenly. For roots I use a sectioning comb, section hair and use the metal pointy bit to pick out the strands that need colour and put a foil underneath them so the other hairs dont get colour on them, and paint the roots with a 1:1 mix of charles worthington bonded bleach powder and 3% peroxide mix (takes longer to lighten but reduces breakage and gives a better more even result than higher peroxides). Seal the foils like they do at a hairdressers and let develop. Then wash, leave a toner on for 10-20 minutes, wash and style as normal. Usually takes a while so the next day I go back and do a shadow root/root smudge. I just use a mixing/blending brush and paint close to the roots and then use the thin bit of teh brush to pull some of the colour down so it blends and gives the blonde really good dimension and no blocky weirdness.

I think I've just had bad luck when it comes to hairdressers, they always seem to go rogue and deviate from whats been shown in multiple photos, they always seem to prefer highlights to balayage, and have their own ideas of colour. It doesnt make sense for me to pay alot for someone else to do it when I'll have to at very least tone it myself.

Sorry to hear about your allergy, it restricts your options a little doesnt it.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 06/02/2026 14:59

£160. Midlands. Cut/trim. Balayage. Toner wash and blow dry.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 06/02/2026 15:03
