Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

Thanks @Whowhatwerewolf although I am also functional rather than stylish, I would prefer less shapeless!

It looks like something on the rails at the Spanish Saturday market by our house - for €10.

Ill pick you one up this Sat if you like!

Sweaty Betty leggings? Are they really worth £88? I like the wide colour options and I see loads wearing them in my gym classes. But are they worth it?

Not at all in the spirit of the thread, but I recently needed some emergency elasticated waist trousers. I bought two pairs from Sweaty Better, the Power 7 8th leggings and a pair of slim flared yoga trousers, both half price, and they are excellent. Far better than any others I’ve ever owned.

I wouldn’t want to pay full price though.

Goes to sit in the naughty corner.

MindYourUsage · 02/02/2026 22:07

@ItsNotYou852 and @SecretSquirrelLoo I know 🙈 to be fair it is just the pattern (like a fingerprint) not the nostrils and everything. Now that would be fugly!

MakemineaGandT · 02/02/2026 22:07

SecretSquirrelLoo · 02/02/2026 22:03

100% polyester lining. Sweaty armpits anyone?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/02/2026 22:09

ThingsBeingVarious · 02/02/2026 19:30

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie yes please! I've been dissuaded from the merino sweatshirt but, despite Monty Don, weird length and no refund the Plumo Cromer trousers are still in my basket. I have other more pressing uses for the £100+

You can send me the £100 if it'll make you feel any better.

Nowaynowayhose · 02/02/2026 22:09

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie oh gosh, the naughty corner is getting full due to me and Sweaty Betty!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2026 22:10

SecretSquirrelLoo · 02/02/2026 22:03

Dull
Dull
Dull

And would be very unfriendly to any curves.

SecretSquirrelLoo · 02/02/2026 22:03

It looks like something a very religious person would wear, to cover themselves up and be modest and unexciting.
It's hideous, too.

MindYourUsage · 02/02/2026 22:11

MakemineaGandT · 02/02/2026 22:07

I second this! For that price it should be better fabric.

Poly has a way of holding onto a BO smell as well...eventually. Only take a few times sweating in it and then it stinks even fresh on

Placestogo · 02/02/2026 22:13

SecretSquirrelLoo · 02/02/2026 22:03

Not sure about the collar or about the block colour. Life is too short for such a boring dress…

SecretSquirrelLoo · 02/02/2026 22:18

Thank you! You have successfully killed my desire. I already own at least 3 blue dresses, all of which are more interesting than that and none have any polyester in. what was I thinking??

@MindYourUsage still no. I’d imagine it dripping. Just an occasional slow little drip, but a drip. Get some actually nice jewellery if you want to spend that much money. Not jewellery based on mucus membrane.

TragicMuse · 02/02/2026 22:29

The bag has already been deinfluenced I think? But no one mentioned the colour! It’s not dark enough for a true caramel, not pale enough for a tan…kind of nothing/nondescript but not in a good neutral-goes-with-everything way. I think that makes it much harder to wear and coordinate.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2026 22:33

Dog nose necklace? God, no. Get a good photo or even a drawing done of said dog and buy a nice non-dog necklace instead. Or spend the money on a couple of nights in a nice dog-friendly hotel!

AandPeggy · 02/02/2026 22:33

RanyaJerodung · 02/02/2026 17:39

Do not buy a cardigan which is a) £119 and b) dry clean only.
The shops are full of cardigans, all washable and all much cheaper!

You are right! Despite @Fgfgfg's suspicions it's 100% cotton (I tried it on), but £119 is ridiculous. Thank you.

Talk me out of this coat. My hesitation is the lack of sizing for the brand. I’m a 16 but with a big chest so I worry the 18, whilst fitting, will give me the oversized shoulder look.

I’ve been to house of bruar in person (as I’m from nearby) but I’m not due back till May and their trustpilot doesn’t make good reading for doing online returns.

Are you wearing it to the hunt?

It looks like a Duchess of Cambridge cast-off circa 2015

Do not buy anything from them full priced. Sales are extensive and frequent unless you want plain black. But even then there’s a black item sale at one point. I find they only last c. 150 washes so you can decide if that’s worth it.

I'm wondering about the proportions and fit?

Please help - I want the Spanx air essentials half zip top and wide leg trousers in truffle brown. Oprah says these tracksuits are incredibly comfortable. I want one to wear running errands around town and while travelling on a plane. £250 total for the set. I know it's wrong...but I want them!

https://spanx.com/en-gb/products/spanx-airessentials-half-zip?collection_cursor=eyJvZmZzZXQiOjE2fQ%3D%3D&collection_direction=next&Color=Truffle+Brown&bau-context=standard&v=48683565154515

https://spanx.com/en-gb/products/spanx-airessentials-wide-leg-pant

I’ve tried these on- they are lovely but 45% polyester which is a lot for the price. Also they have no pockets. Casual trousers with no pockets aren’t worth it in my opinion!

TealReader · 02/02/2026 23:09

I now want Plumo trousers so this thread is in fact influencing me.

That is my main concern. You have to pay for registered shipping back to return as well and it’s going to be heavy so I reckon it would cost £15-20 just to try it on!
