Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

I really like this Massimo Dutti cardigan . Even though I don’t really need it I’m telling myself it would be great for working from home to upgrade my look not look like a tramp and it would go with jeans. It’s dry clean only but that’s not going to happen - would it be ruined by a delicate wash?

I am suspicious. It says the cardigan has a 100% cotton outer shell but also that it's a cardigan with cotton. What is the inner shell made from? It's a lot of money for polyester.

@Wellretired

What is a ‘A proper jumper stretcher’?

I have a lot of vintage cashmere and might need one.

The bag looks an annoying size. Too small and too heavy. Like a £500 doorstop.

plumo trousers - a risky £115 in case you look like Wurzel Gummage. Do you have the right footwear / socks to go with ?

A jumper hoard! You can get them.on Amazon too I think

Jumper Board

A 'Jumper Board' is what has been traditionally used in Shetland to dress knitted garments. We recommend this board for drying your wool

just found this excellent thread - I am a compulsive shopper (usually thrifter) and have a habit of becoming a bit obsessed with certain items - my algorithm loves to taunt me with them repeatedly and these are the current lures (I’m obsessed):

https://www.aspiga.com/products/velvet-quilted-jacket-red

https://www.troylondon.com/products/troy-x-callie-coles-gaucho-trousers-in-honey-corduroy?_pos=2&_sid=137bf12f2&_ss=r

i definitely won’t be getting the trousers as I can’t afford them but I am very very tempted by the jacket. Not sure when I morphed into a country Sloane Ranger - I used to be quite cool. I’m 47 size 10 for reference and have a few quilted jackets already.

Are you doing panto ?

Wellretired · 02/02/2026 20:28

IsabellaCoral · 02/02/2026 20:06

@Wellretired thank you !

I might be cautious using it for cashmere though - its a lot softer wool and might stretch out of shape.

No! I’m growing my hair out and my sister bought me one. You have to charge it and then use- it doesn’t hold a charge so it has to be charged every time and it puts lots of static in my hair so makes it look worse. Give it a miss.

Thank you so much. I shall IGNORE the ads!

ThingsBeingVarious · 02/02/2026 20:33

@IsabellaCoral yes! I have these Clarks Torhill boots and Ugg New Heights clogs and countless pairs of slouchy cashmere socks. I feel like everything in my wardrobe is just waiting for those Plumo trousers.

it's not a saving if you are spending £200 on it!

See, I hated her politics, but she always looked smart and appropriately dressed. You never once saw her looking a mess. So that doesn't really put me off.
However, the weight thing does.

Strathberry has a shop in London and Edinburgh so if you do get it, get it direct from them as their customer service is better than Liberty's. Or go and feel the weight of it first if possible

This'll be fabulous when you move to Seville and take on your new role role as a flamenco dancer.

Seriously, you'll wear it once because it's too impractical and hard to style ad it'll languish at the bottom of the wardrobe for a decade

💃🏻

You're right, it's too long for practicality. I'd be tucking myself into the car and hoping it doesn't get caught in the door or the pedals.

Blacksheepatnewyear · 02/02/2026 21:29

I thought Strathberry bags were made in Edinburgh, Scotland? That's mire of a reason to buy it though so not in the spirit of this thread

Nowaynowayhose · 02/02/2026 21:31

Sweaty Betty leggings? Are they really worth £88? I like the wide colour options and I see loads wearing them in my gym classes. But are they worth it?

ItsNotYou852 · 02/02/2026 21:35

Yep, first thing that occurred to me about the skirt was that I'd be tripping over the hem every two steps!
Maybe you can help me, after spending 60 years hardly ever wearing a coat I seem to have bought 6 in the last two months.
Now eyeing up this mac https://www.regatta.com/womens-orla-kiely-mac-waterproof-jacket-navy-blue/, please explain why I really don't want it!

Ah. Now I know the purpose of this thread is to dissuade people from wasting their money but I have many pairs of these and have replaced all my other gym/workout leggings with the SB power leggings and they really are the absolute dogs bollocks. I always stick to the black ones but now have a couple of pairs of the extra warmth ones too in a dark khaki green but the snazzy jazzy ones often go in the sale and you can get them for half price, maybe even less?
they don’t budge, are squat proof and have a good deep phone pocket. I would consider it a waste of money buying several cheaper pairs that were inferior.

It's boxy and will look shapeless on. It reads as functional rather than stylish. The nicest thing about it is the lining but you're the only one who's going to see it.

You know yourself @TheChosenTwo - you're the second one heading to the naughty corner on the new thread.

I have a pair of Sweaty Betty 7/8 leggings and they're fine but I don't reach for them any more often than I do my cheaper leggings from random other brands. I run and do reformers pilates and don't find the Sweaty Betty superior for either activity.

I’ve become a bit obsessed in my search for a navy wool jacket. I’ve landed on this one

https://www.next.co.uk/style/su917856/y35403

I bought a hush pure wool coat 2 weeks ago. It was unlined and as such structurally in the wildnerness with a poor fit. Not the same coat but this one is also unlined.

do you really want to wear a dogs nose just under your chin?

Nowaynowayhose · 02/02/2026 21:56

@TheChosenTwo you’ve persuaded me! It’s the khaki green Power leggings that I’ve got my eye on. I’m getting them now! Not keen on the jazzy ones. I’ve just seen that they accept Blue Light discount too, so that’s 20% off.

Designed in Scotland and made in Spain.

If you are actually considering that, you need more help than the whole internet could provide. And I really, really like dogs.

@Nowaynowayhose Sweaty Betty leggings are pretty good ime, especially the super soft yoga ones. But you don’t need to pay full price for them. There are good sales.
