Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

It’s everywhere. Have you seen the waspi threads? I’m sure when I was young I didn’t hate older women.

True, it is everywhere. Same here when I was young. I looked to older women for wisdom and guidance, and would never be so rude and dismissive. It's an acceptable prejudice now, it would seem.

Sorry but it reminds me of the queen, to be worn with a pastel coloured coat and hat.

Elizabeth II or Camilla?
The pastel coat and hat thing puts me off, so thanks, although both women had/have some good style moments.

Yes I agree that both generally dressed well for their roles, but I’ve never seen either of them in anything I’d want to wear myself, as far as I can recall.

Ok, although I did covet Camilla's Dior outfit that she wore to meet the Macrons!
I'm definitely going to focus on the pastel coat and hat to deter my purchase, though...

I want this Strathberry bag. It's the perfect colour and size. It's quality leather, handmade in Spain.
I love it.

I was looking at this bag after seeing an article at the weekend. You don’t need to buy the bag! Apparently the company is doing very well because HRH Kate has one or two or more. I love the style but I do seem to go ‘Thatcher’ style for bags!

Yes, I just really like the colour and style and the shape and size!

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 15:18

@winterwonder1 it was @CortieTat who de-influenced me from the eribé jumper as part of a thread on shopping your own wardrobe. She has one and apparently the fit is off because of how it's knit around the shoulders (it's very narrow even though she doesn't have particularly wide shoulders) and it isn't her favourite of her fair isles.

I need help! I love a cosy item of clothing, even if it makes me look like a Michelin man. There is a lovely puffer jacket (short length) in fig in my size, back in stock and on sale at Regatta. It was fine whilst it was out of stock - why did I check!!

I didn’t see that one. I’ll have a google.
I do think there are lots of nicer bags around though and probably cheaper too.

I actually don't even need another handbag!

How much?

How much?

£36 - less than half price

Yes, I just really like the colour and style and the shape and size!

To me that bag screams TK Maxx. It's the kind of style they tend to stock a lot of and it would be 10% of the price. I think it's a very straight-laced prim and proper look.

Numoya Go Brush Pro. Yes or No?

For now - No! If you really must - then wait until your current hairdryer is defunct! That might take a year or two - is that long enough to put you off buying it? 😏

No! I’m growing my hair out and my sister bought me one. You have to charge it and then use- it doesn’t hold a charge so it has to be charged every time and it puts lots of static in my hair so makes it look worse. Give it a miss.

Thinking of buying polishey nail
polish pens as I am rubbish at painting my nails

Get a pair of 3x reading glasses from Poundland or similar. This will massively help you to paint your own nails much more than polish pens which are awkward to use (you can never quite see around the pen). Also read up on techniques like how often to dip your brush and not to go over the same area until the first coat is dry, not to get too close to your cuticles, etc. I used to be rubbish at painting my nails also and now I'm a pro!

Help talk me out of buying an Apple Watch. My Fitbit Luxe died early November and with Christmas and a big holiday on the horizon I replaced it with a HUAWEI 10, at first I thought it was great but it doesn’t seem to count my 3 times a week reformer Pilates and that’s really annoying me, I never manage to connect those bloody rings even though I exercise every day bar one.

I’ve got one. Also annoyed that it doesn’t count my reformer although suspect I could just list it as mat Pilates and it would register the same 🫣 also doesn’t track my outdoor open water swims ffs.
what I will say is the only function I use it for regularly is to press the button that pings my phone when I can’t find it. It needs charging every night (another thing to plug in) and the torch feature is dreadful. It’s a waste of cash for sure. Don’t bother.

The battery life on the apple phones is dreadful. Never buying another.

Apple watch sorry - although the phones have awful battery life too
