Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

Beyond Nine is hideously over priced. If you really want a pair of checked jeans I’m pretty sure you could find some for a lot less than their prices. And that cardigan is also really poor value for money, it looks worn out. Again if you really want it I bet you can find a better version.

StylishAndBeautiful · 20/10/2026 10:49

@triggers34 , that Bonnie outfit is dreadful. The trousers look like Primark.
The aran is nice but I wouldn't wear that colour.

TragicMuse · 20/10/2026 10:54

I don’t like the length of the jeans or the colour of the cardigan.

triggers34 · 20/10/2026 11:01

😂 keep them coming it’s working , the trousers would be longer on me as I’m 5ft 2 , the Cardigan is the closest I can find to the meadows quince one , but it’s the wrong brown I need darker.

You're 5'2", the model is 5'10" and a size 8. A big jumper will drown you.

StylishAndBeautiful · 21/10/2026 19:52

@70isaLimitNotaTarget, wear it with crocs and sport socks.

I am on that thread and I must say I covet the skirt. Despite plastic. Luckily it has sold out of many sizes including mine! So no help whatsoever 😄

StylishAndBeautiful · 21/10/2026 23:32

It's plastic but looks good. It's not expensive and you'd probably get many wears from it but it needs a heel, even if just a kitten heel.
If you're slim and elegant, you might get away with flat toe post flats. A satin bias slip skirt would pack better and be more versatile.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/10/2026 18:33

Sadly I'm not tall, slim or elegant . I thought the wrap might cover my menopausal tummy but I can see it getting wrapped round my legs and annoying me when I walk.. Even more tricky with a heel , on a cruise on a rocky bit of the voyage

You're supposed to be putting me off it Grin

StylishAndBeautiful · 22/10/2026 18:54

Oh dear. Hoping to hide a menopausal tummy and plastic sexy skirt seem at odds with each other. Sorry!

EleanorMc67 · 22/10/2026 19:14

Sexy - or elegant - plastic clothing is something of a contradiction in terms anyway, to me.

The skirt might look good in the short term - but it will retain any crease-marks permanently, start to flake & stiffen within a year or two, become unwearable & end up in landfill - dispersing millions of microplastic particles into the water supply ...

TheChosenTwo · 22/10/2026 20:15

I saw that other thread and didn’t want to post on it but I thought it looked like a binbag; awful skirt! No idea why it was getting so many positive compliments tbh, you’d like you were walking yourself to the wheelie bin 🫣😂

I keep looking at a Barbour jacket..... I fancy myself as a country set type (I'm not!) but wonder if I would just smell like a wet candle all the time and look like I should be working at the mart......

Try it on then decide.
They are heavy and smelly. You'll probably want a woolly jumper underneath it.
They need re-proofing fairly often, not a big job and how often depends on how you wear it, it's a bit like polishing shoes but coat-sized.
You can't wash or dry-clean them.

I have one and I'll probably have it for life. I don't wear it for commuting or in the car - the wax rubs off and the coat is a bit bulky - but I could.

If you want a good-looking jacket that will last forever if you look after it, get it.
If you want to get it because you think it looks nice, don't, unless you have £££ to spare.

I have a more practical one with a hood.
