Thread 2 – De-influencing thread: reasons not to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/02/2026 09:41

Starting Thread 2 as Thread 1 has nearly reached the comment limit.

For anyone new: this thread has a specific purpose. If you are considering buying something but deep down would prefer to save your money, post a link to the item. Other posters will help talk you out of it.

Humour and gentle mockery are very much part of how this thread works, alongside more practical points. Sometimes a light-hearted comment helps something click; other times it’s about noticing details that are easy to miss when you’re tempted.

Common tactics include:

  • poking fun (so please don't post something if your feelings will be hurt by this)
  • pointing out that you already own something that serves the same purpose
  • spotting poor quality, flimsy construction or inferior fabrics hiding behind good photography
  • questioning whether the item solves a problem that actually exists
  • translating marketing language into plain English

What this thread is not:

  • mocking people who wear the item
  • ageist sniping (calling something “granny” is actually praise)
  • cruelty for its own sake

The target is the thing, not the person.

The previous thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things?latest=1

In it we covered a lot of ground including a sad tangerine skirt, another one that looked like it was tucked into your underpants, Gary Glitter shoes, saggy bottoms, air wraps gathering dust and lots of polyester at premium prices.

Also worth restating, based on Thread 1:
This is not a balanced debate thread. It is not “let’s hear both sides”. People who posted positive comments about items were, quite rightly, sent to the naughty corner. This is not the thread for that.

This thread is for people who want to be de-influenced, not gently nudged towards a purchase they already know they’re going to make.

If you’re hovering over Add to basket and need someone to say “step away”, post the link.
If you’re good at spotting polyester pretending to be wool, please contribute.

Thread 2 begins. Same format. Same aim.

@NesciensMater I have literally donated them all because I never wore them. But like an idiot, I think that this time is different..
You lot have successfully deinfluenced me. White will look just as nice with light blue, and won't go out of fashion last year.

MrsDahliaTravers · 11/04/2026 12:28

Love this thread, please de-influence me from this cardigan with fruit buttons!

StylishAndBeautiful · 11/04/2026 12:43

@MrsDahliaTravers , is it yours? I can't see the buttons. What is it made of?

StylishAndBeautiful · 11/04/2026 12:57

The colour looks like it would be hard to find something to wear with it. The design looks cropped and boxy and would make me look busty.
I wouldn't wear it because it looks very short and I like my back to be warm.

Fruit button seem cute but a bit twee and would invite knobby comments from idiots.

MrsDahliaTravers · 11/04/2026 13:34

@StylishAndBeautiful No, it's on Vinted! I think it looks like it has gone a bit bobbly already.

StylishAndBeautiful · 11/04/2026 13:54

Found it. No details of fabric but looks like a wool mix. Buttons are cute.
I would not pay £23.80 for it.

Nowvoyager99 · 11/04/2026 15:44

It’s lovely @MrsDahliaTravers but if you look closely you’ll see the sleeves have already gone bobbly.

Nowvoyager99 · 11/04/2026 15:46

@KatharinaRosalie yellow makes most of us look jaundiced. Waste of money, you will never reach for it.

BIossomtoes · 11/04/2026 16:34

It’s very 1990s Per Una @MrsDahliaTravers.

MrsDahliaTravers · 11/04/2026 16:52

@BIossomtoes @Nowvoyager99 @StylishAndBeautiful Thank you all, consider me de-influenced!

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 09:56

Liberty Annie Tana Lawn™ Cotton Robe | Liberty
Can't afford it.

Whowhatwerewolf · 02/07/2026 11:10

I'm sure you can find nicer dressing gowns for much cheaper than that one, @StylishAndBeautiful

OP posts:
StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 11:14

I don't need a dressing gown at all, got one, but it doesn't stop me wanting one.Smile
I thought with the sales being on it would be good to bump the thread.

KatharinaRosalie · 02/07/2026 11:18

the Liberty dressing gown has such a hospital vibe.

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 11:19

I don't think you're meant to be encouraging me to buy anything. Smile
The first one is nice, and if I needed one I'd be tempted. The second one is not temptation.

the Liberty dressing gown has such a hospital vibe. I like your advice.

I have several cotton kimonos, which I'd kind of forgotten about, + a few Toast robes, which I find too nice to wear. The Liberty one would fall into the 'saving for best' category. I am about to have a cull of my pyjamas and I think I'll try to get that down to 2 pairs of nice ones + about 5 ok ones + 2 sets of jin bei.

Edited

Sorry. 😔

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 11:26

No need to apologise @blossomtoes, you've reminded me to at least shift the 4 sacks of donations to the chazza this week.
Got any Sales goodies in mind? I think the Toast and Plumo sales are on.

BIossomtoes · 02/07/2026 11:32

Sadly, I’ve succombed to the Beyond Nine sale. I sent the Toast jumper I ordered back. The wool was coarse and scratchy.

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 11:59

I'd not heard of Beyond Nine. Thanks! (not in the spirit of things but New Arrivals - New Womens Wear – Beyond Nine)

Had a quick look and it's nice but nothing grabbed me.

CortieTat · 02/07/2026 12:41

The robe under the etsy link has such a strong DHgate vibe. I’m sure you can find it there as a bundle of 100 for £9.89 plus an extra £0.21 off with a coupon!

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 12:58

@CortieTat , wow! Who needs an open market in a run-down town when you can shop at DHgate. (bit disappointed that it wasn't about the drawer thread from last night that got deletedSmile)

Sorry, I only took a quick look and thought it was a dress that just looked like a dressing gown! I guess I hadn't realised actual dressing gowns could be so expensive 😂
Glad you bumped the thread xx

It wasn’t a joke, both Etsy and Vinted are flooded with things from DHgate/Alibaba and similar being sold as handmade (or used). Sometimes the seller doesn’t even bother to change the picture.

StylishAndBeautiful · 02/07/2026 15:13

Glad you bumped the thread xx
I thought of it when I thought a tana lawn dress would be ideal for summer. (e.g. Liberty Print Dresses and Skirts | Made in England | Justine Tabak for those not in need of discouragement)
