De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Ah Henry’s are big clunky….but great 😬. The stuff that thing has managed to hoover up nothing comes close. I bought the xtra which is even heavier 🫣 but it’s seen off 3 other ones I bought to replace it. You can get extension hose kit for the stairs. For quick pick ups you’ll just need another hoover though. But you will at least get fit lugging it around!

Whowhatwerewolf · 30/01/2026 09:27

Nooooo @Blossomtoes that is £49 😮

I have been thinking about having grown up cutlery (my current ‘set’ is an amalgam of Freecycle cutlery from a closing down b&b and stuff from flats over the years) and this really expensive but beautiful set won’t leave my mind. Maybe as a wedding gift from multiple guests? Convince me it’s a waste of money. (Sabre bristot colour undecided)

Also, think of all those bits of cutlery youve collected over your life as souvenirs of your life. The spoon from your nan; the knife from your student digs; forks from the charity shop etc Mismatched cutlery is way more interesting and cool than having a perfect matching set. And if you really must have a matching set then you can get a plain one which would be much nicer than this cheap looking set, and it would be much cheaper.

Is anyone reading this thread and getting lots of little inspirations to go off and research more stuff they ‘need’ to buy now? 😳😔

Henrys are great for builders- good suction and can hoover up anything. Not for for round the house. Too big, heavy and cumbersome. As PP said: impossible to do the stairs with.

I’ve never paid that much for it. There’s always a deal. A pot lasts about six months and hand on heart it really works. It’s a really good eye cream as well.

It looks like someone has zoomed in on the locking mechanism on a hospital toilet door.

😆😆😆

Whowhatwerewolf · 30/01/2026 09:32

Ok now can someone please de-influence me from Filorga time filler eye cream also please 😂
@BIossomtoes that's detention for you

Ohh it’s gorgeous .. but then I am a total enabler re knitwear .

Absolutely love love this cardigan.. if you're youngish/ youthful and slim of build it will look great - on me (older and quite frankly getting matronly) I think could look like an old drab granny in it....

It looks like you'd find it in the reduced basket in River Island after Christmas.

I am not young! And medium size. But I think anyone can wear anything and I don't believe in the 'mutton dressed as lamb' theory. It is a bit drab though.

Whowhatwerewolf · 30/01/2026 09:45

Ah brilliant thank you@StealthSightHound I can't tolerate niacinamide so that bullet is dodged. I probably can't tolerate loads of those but the niacinamide I know about for certain. Great point also about all those chemicals going into your bloodstream.

Talk me out of signing up to Elevate collagen and Hulme Health expensive ‘dexa’ scales

Nutrition Geeks do a great cheap collegen.

That's loads of cheaper smart scales, I use the withings body one.

So I bought a cordless to do stairs but the henry with the hose extension is long enough to do stairs without having to carry the hoover from stair to stair - prob didn't make that clear. And that is actually lighter than my cordless! So now I use both. You basically leave him at the bottom of the stairs and have enough hose to do all the stairs so pretty light - albeit a bit weird looking and faffy.

ainsisoisje · 30/01/2026 10:02

Just to clarify I don't work for Henry or numatic 😅

CortieTat · 30/01/2026 10:05

@Wallywobbles it’s normal for knitwear to bobble a bit at the beginning. These bobbles are loose fibres still in the yarn after the production process. If you want less bobble don’t use the shaver, just gently pull out the bobbles. Shaving removes the bobbles but also cuts a lot of tiny fibres that end up forming new bobbles.

I have several Brora jumpers, tanks and a cardigan. They are made in Scotland, Czech Republic and Portugal and I have not noticed any difference in quality to be honest. The most bobbly one is wool (not cashmere) made in Scotland so probably by Harley. I’ve just pulled out the first bobbles and the new ones haven’t popped up.

Brora customer service is shit though. They lost my order last summer and it took over two months, nearly 20 emails and threatening with a credit card chargeback to get the refund. I used to be a returning customer, had close to 40 orders with them over the years. Never again, there are better knitwear options out there.

I keep wanting to buy the things in this thread... so I obviously need this thread.
FYI.. that varnish is reduced in Boots atm

We've got building work going on and my useless useless stick dyson is rubbish. And only does about three stairs at a time.. I thiink all the dust etc will finish it off.

Thinking of getting a Henry - any objections?

ps. can anyone stop me from buying that Seaweed Shampoo? I've got very fine hair and I don't believe it grows back just because of shampoo- but still.

Edited

Sorry, as a happy Henry and George owner, I cannot talk you out of him. Get the Reach kit to avoid problems on stairs.

Henry is not good for builders, in fact Henry fails at the first hurdle for construction work because he doesn't have the correct filtration system to control dust circulation.

I'm an ex HSE Inspector and basically had to go tell every site to consider Henry as banned because he wasn't up to the job.

And he's an absolute dick for falling over.
