De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Tallow and ash stain remover. Every bloody influencer has it which is putting me off for a start but the concept of a stain remover I can carry round is great as I’m an absolute nightmare for spilling. Someone tell me it’s crap please

CortieTat · 30/01/2026 08:06

@YouHaveAnArse every time I want something made of (or with) plastic I ask myself two questions:

  1. Would I eat it?
  2. How much would I be willing to pay for a meal for the whole family in a restaurant that serves only plastic food?

Plastic things shed microplastic shards that are found in food, water and everywhere on the planet and then get into and stay in our bodies so these questions are not silly.

The sweater doesn’t look cute to me, I would definitely not eat it and I wouldn’t serve it to my children either.

I paid £650 for mine in 2008.

It’s worn on all the corners, scuffed, looks like a sack of spuds. The plastic is showing on some of the ribbing.

Even empty is weighs a tonne. The handle is too short to put it on your shoulder. You’ll never lock it as that’s a faff and if you put the flap over it rattles off the lock as you walk.

My version is made in England, the new ones are meant to be worse.

echo this. have 2 Bayswaters bought in the mid 2000s and they feel worn and dated now. i don't use them as i can't get them over my shoulder comfortably (certainly not over a quote). just yesterday i asked Mulberry for a buy-back quote. i'm with you on the tote bag however.....

i LOVE this thread. talk me out of this please!!! i love it so much, it's a great price and i wear blue all the time. www.mulberry.com/gb/shop/women/bags/small-amberley-satchel-brighton-blue-small-classic-grain

It looks like someone has zoomed in on the locking mechanism on a hospital toilet door.

BatsInHibernation · 30/01/2026 08:28

I can't help you out if you can afford it, it goes with everything, and you would wear it for years.
Also, as you haven't bought new clothes for two years.
This really is how people should shop. Although I would consider this wildly out of my price range, I bet I have ten items of £50 value that have barely been worn.
Get this skirt.

Kat Slater would love that bag.

Leopard print is an neutral AND a classic.

Very nice. Just needs the dad leather slippers, pipe and a pouch of tobacco to complete the 1950s retro look.

Ha! Everyone said that and I confirmed I dress v masculine ( despite being a woman).
Looking for something brighter and not so cropped now.

These cost more per ml than petrol.
Try Baby Shampoo from Lidl or Aldi.
Sending you good vibes and a scratch-free scalp!

I have same hair and now I want this which is not the point of this thread 😂
DO NOT use baby shampoo on your sensitive scalp and thick dry hair unless you want birds nesting in it by March.

RichardOnslowRoper · 30/01/2026 08:35

Sad to discover even pricey Brora jumpers bobble. My Uniqlo one doesn't.

Also @OrigamiOwls I have very thick hair and an itchy scalp. Moo Goo shampoo works well and a bottle lasts some 6 months.

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!
https://uk.burberry.com/charm-necklace-p81169051

A grand and it's made from 100% brass with CZ stones?

Absolutely not. Find a real gold one for the same price! Or buy the Monica Vinader knock off for £180 (still overpriced IMO).

Nothing huge but this has been sitting in my to buy list forever as I can't decide if it's worth it or not.

A non-alcoholic aperitif = a soft drink, so save yourself some money and buy squash. Belvoir ginger cordial is £4. Belvoir also do a ginger, lemon and honey one.

EmbracingUncertainty · 30/01/2026 06:33

Can you do your job whilefocusing on not falling off the thing? In video calls it will be very distracting for everyone as they wonder why you’re turning a bit red and in a constant state of approach. Any reason why you can’t get out for some fresh air for a 20min walk every so often?

Oh my god ‘a constant state of approach’
🙈🤣🤣🤣

I have a Henry and it has pissed me off too many times, I’ve just replaced it. Gets caught on every doorway, and when you try to pull it free it just tips over. Vacuuming the stairs is a nightmare, it has sit at the top or the bottom and you have to stretch the hose to it’s maximum to get halfway, and then move the unit.

I recommend a Charles. Because it’s wet and dry, it’s allowed to be more powerful than a standard vac (unless I’ve been conned) and if you ever flood a room it’s handy. But that said I got it only for if I was filling and sanding walls so as not to ruin my Dyson v15 detect. A cordless is essential for day to day. Charles lives in the loft. To unwieldy for daily use.

I am sorry Miss Wolf, I am contrite. Worst of all, I knew it was wrong, even as I was doing it!

I have been thinking about having grown up cutlery (my current ‘set’ is an amalgam of Freecycle cutlery from a closing down b&b and stuff from flats over the years) and this really expensive but beautiful set won’t leave my mind. Maybe as a wedding gift from multiple guests? Convince me it’s a waste of money. (Sabre bristot colour undecided)

Lovely cutlery but can only go in the dishwasher at a max temp of 45C. This would mean I would have to hand wash them and am too lazy to bother!

It also looks like something you’d buy your student offspring when they leave home for the first time.

TheFrugalChicken · 30/01/2026 07:19

My first two thoughts are you’re easily influenced and they must’ve been paid a lot to wear/ promote them!
They look like they belong on a 70+ year old man, the ones he’d usually wear to the allotment, or to get a pint at some slimy/ gross pub. Ewww. I’m not keen - pun intended. 😆

Agree. Im going to assume that the influencer is young and beautiful to be able to pull these off. If you are not young and beautiful, OP, you are going to look like an old lady in these. They literally look like some that my grandma has (she's 90) If you are young and beautiful then you really dont need these shoes in your life. You will still be young and beautiful without them. Just stick to the ones you already have.

I do sympathise. I know I catch myself doing this a lot: I think if I buy something that somebody I admire has, then it will make me more like them. It doesn't. It just makes you poorer with an item of clothing that doesn't suit you.

Whowhatwerewolf · 30/01/2026 09:18

Ok. I've developed a craving for the Milk hydro grip skin tint. I think it would be great for my dry, sensitive skin. But I already have an Elf Halo Glow (the cheapest in my collection and actually my favourite) , Beauty of Joseon skin tint, one from Chantecaille and an IT cosmetics one I haven't even opened (I know I am being utterly ridiculous) https://www.spacenk.com/uk/makeup/complexion/tinted-moisturiser-skin-tint/hydro-grip-gel-tint-MUK200054227.html

I also want these Tatti lashes. I only have cluster lashes (and one pair of 3/4 lashes from Eylure). My lashes have always been sparse and are now nearly nonexistent post-menopause so I do "need" to wear false lashes https://tattilashes.com/products/ombre-honey-to-caramel

That was my first thought. Looks like a cheap Ikea set you'd buy for your child when they leave home.
