Jumpers over shirt?

LeftoversAgain · 27/01/2026 11:58

Basic Style question here! Love this look but my existing jumpers feel too thin for this look. Is that how its meant to look or should the jumpers be thicker? shirts from Zara.

@OswaldCobblepot , The t-shirt needs a fairly high neck, and t-shirt necks aren't normally that high. A jumper having a lowish crew is probably easier to find.

OswaldCobblepot · 28/01/2026 10:10

Thanks for the suggestions @SurferRona & @StylishAndBeautiful. I'll try a mens' t shirt in a smaller size, they usually have higher necks.

Noeggsontoast · 28/01/2026 10:13

I just put on my T-shirt back to front. The collar is higher then under a crewneck
sweater. Just flashes out.

tealandteal · 28/01/2026 10:15

I love this look but find it just too many layers, especially with the emotional support vest. I have just bought a fake collar to see if it will work. Obviously this won’t work if you might need to take the jumper off but I don’t usually do this anyway.

Why have I never thought of trying this?

I corrected myself, as you can obviously see. Not sure why you've got out of bed on the wrong side this morning, but you are literally being a prick. So feel free to reflect on how you talk to people online and hope you have a better day.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/01/2026 10:32

For this look to work, I think you need a slim fitting tailored shirt, and a looser fit jumper.

sophiasmithh · 28/01/2026 10:44

If you want that crisp look a slightly thicker knit usually works better. Thin jumpers tend to show the shirt buttons and seams underneath, so everything looks bumpy instead of clean.

Firm Generation X here and I have to ask …

emotional support vest???

We feel like we need to wear a vest under all our tops. The early 00s emo layering trend might have affected our brain development.

Even now, I could never leave the house raw dogging a hoodie straight over my underwear. I'd feel naked. I need a vest on to feel secure.

You know they say Generation X are hard, we brought ourselves up, blah, blah?

id be happy leaving the house with no underwear under a hoody!!

I am gen x and rarely without my safety vest (sometimes also paired with safety pants).

my issue is less the collars with jumpers, but the underarm tightness of bulkiness - it does require careful shirt selection.

StylishAndBeautiful · 28/01/2026 11:07

What are safety vests and safety pants?

I'm ancient (boomer) and have taken to wearing an emotional support vest this winter! Keeps my chest warm. Never too old to learn a style and beauty tip 🤗

On a related subject... how do people manage to pull off the tshirt under a jumper look? Like in the M&S picture above. It never seems to work for me. Whatever tshirt I try never seems to sit right, the neck is never the right shape/height.

Saw an instagram thing the other day when the woman put the t shirt on back to front - the back of the t shirt neck is higher than the front so it shows over the top of the sweatshirt neckline.

StylishAndBeautiful · 28/01/2026 11:33

I think i wear emotional support t-shirts. I definitely wouldn't wear a hoodie with no t-shirt underneath.

CapriceDeDieux · 28/01/2026 12:03

StylishAndBeautiful · 28/01/2026 11:07

What are safety vests and safety pants?

Warm, comfortable and well fitted and no itchy bits or rucking up - so a thong could never be safety pants and a lacy vest could never be a safety vest. I think it may be the same as this idea of emotional support vests - but for me it's also sensory. I guess the opposite of anything flimsy. Confidence giving, but like a protective hug. I think I may have thought too much about this and put too much faith in my pants keeping me safe!!

My point was really that it's not just millenials who seek support from their underwear!

StylishAndBeautiful · 28/01/2026 12:16

@CapriceDeDieux , I see what you mean. I feellike that about flimsy dresses - they need something 'secure' underneath.

I wore a thong once then binned it.

CapriceDeDieux · 28/01/2026 12:19

@StylishAndBeautiful - exactly.

Bum floss is best in the bin!

AltitudeCheck · 28/01/2026 13:29

A word of caution with the layering a white Tshirt back to front under your jumper idea... if you are menopausal and prone to hot flushes and forgetfulness... you may be tempted to whip off your jumper when you feel heatwave coming, please don't forget you are wearing a back to front T shirt (in my case with a visible chest logo, now on the back) when you carry on with your day wondering why people are smiling at you so much!

Crazycatlady75 · 28/01/2026 13:31

Love this thread - both for the fashion tips and the introduction into my vocabulary of the phrases "emotional support vest" and "rawdogging a hoody"!

canklesmctacotits · 28/01/2026 13:38

I wear a boat neck sweater over a collared shirt, or a tank sweater over a shirt with puffy sleeves. It basically has to adhere to the “not everything too baggy and not everything to skintight” mantra.

LeftoversAgain · 28/01/2026 13:42

Me again - so i purchased a fake collar thing but it just sits awkwardly on my huge bosom. Not sure if im even wearing it right!
